Tissue Technology Center Unique resources at your service
Innovate, develop, optimize! Valmet Tissue Technology Center at your service Valmet Tissue Technology Center is a unique resource for cultivating and realization of ideas, innovations and verifying new technologies or machine configurations. All our recent, and coming, innovations are developed here. But not just our own technology. We are also working closely together with partners and customers from all over the world to find the best solutions for their particular requirements. We help you be prepared for the future. 2 Cost-efficient trials under strict confidentiality A pilot trial is a cost-efficient way to do tests in production environment compared to the cost of testing in a tissue mill. No matter if your target is to optimize consumer products, improve machine properties or the blend of water, fiber and chemicals, we make sure your trial will be as efficient as possible. Pilot trials can also be used to define runnability window or trouble shooting, speed up the machine, increase capacity or cut consumption figures. Naturally we work under strict confidentiality. Test runs are easy A test run is always designed according to your requirements and planned together to ensure you get the most of the trial. You can bring your own furnish or chemicals or we can provide it for you. Our flexible furnish system enables most types of mixes. When the trial period is over we provide data and test results from the trial. We can also arrange shipping of the finished paper rolls. Sharing knowledge and develop together Development is not only about inventing new products and services - it is also how to design, combine and use the technology in a more effective way. We work closely together with tissue makers to develop technologies, products and processes for the benefit of the tissue consumers of today and tomorrow. In close collaboration, we can achieve great results. Hands on training under real conditions The connection between machine efficiency and best operational practices are essential. The pilot plant provide excellent conditions for hands on training under real conditions supported by leading tissue experts. It can also be combined with Valmet s unique simulation training.

The pilot machines are ideal for product development and product evaluation of different tissue processes. Or let us help you produce test rolls for converting or market test. We can also offer pulp trials with your own pulp or testing of new machine clothing, coating or creping. Pilot trials are easy to perform and together we will develop a tailor made trial plan according to your specific needs. Full flexibility and wide expertise With access to flexible production tools, a fully equipped paper laboratory and a wide network of tissue expertise near at hand we provide a creative environment for constructive work to achieve your targets. The Tissue Technology Center inherit two full sized, flexible pilot machines with auxiliary systems designed and equipped to meet tissue maker s every need. In practice this means that the pilot machines can be configured for production of plain, textured and structured tissue products but can also be customized according to specific requests. Advantage NTT configuration for production of plain and textured tissue paper. Equipped with an engraved belt to create the texture and a SymBelt press to dewater the web before final drying on the Yankee. The laser engraved pattern in the belt open up a world of possibilities. Make your own special pattern or add your logo at the sheet. With a non-engraved belt conventional tissue is produced with low energy consumption. Advantage DCT configuration for production of conventional, plain tissue paper. Equipped with pressing element to dewater the web before final drying on the Yankee. The pilot machine can be operated with either a traditional suction pressure roll or the Advantage ViscoNip press. Advantage Thru-Air configuration for production of structured tissue paper. Equipped with a TAD fabric to create the structure before the paper is dried with Through air drying. The TAD process give unique product properties with respect to softness for bath and absorbency for towel grades. 4
The pilot machines are extremely flexible and can even be adjusted on the run. Major preparations are of course done before you arrive to Karlstad in order to make your trial period as efficient as possible. Reliable test results Our paper laboratory is equipped with the latest technology to ensure reliable test results. Pulp and paper samples are continuously analyzed due to basis weight, absorbency, layer purity, tensile stretch and a number of other variables. The regularity of the tests combined with the possibility to benchmark the result with our extensive bank of test data, ensure stable and reliable test results. The home of innovations Since late 60 ties the Tissue Technology Center has been the home of Valmet s tissue product development. Most of the Advantage tissue technologies are invented here, by creative minds condensing process knowledge, experience, market feedback and fresh ideas into efficient tissue production equipment. Sustainability and safety is highly prioritized. By reducing energy consumption greenhouse gas emissions can be limited at the same time as great cost savings can be achieved. The sustainability work influence how we handle work environment issues around the tissue machines at our pilot plant and at customer s sites. We comply with current legislation and are certified according to ISO 9001, 14001 and OSHAS 18001. Joint development a winwin concept development projects in Valmet. The target to reduce energy consumption in a tissue production line with 30% were achieved in 2011 and we are now touching the target of 1800 kwh/ ton. Energy saving key components Advantage ViscoNip press flexible pressing concept to reduce energy consumption, improve paper properties with enhanced runnability. Advantage ReTurne energy recovery system - recovers more than 50% of the energy in the headbox jet power and returns it back to the process as electricity Advantage ReDry web heater - utilize exhaust air from the hood to increase pre-press dryness and reduce drying energy consumption Advantage ReGen Cogeneration system - innovative process for utilization of the exhaust fumes from the turbine to cover the entire thermal and electrical needs of the drying process 6 The pilot plant is an important resource for the development of new innovations and improvement of existing technologies. By working in close cooperation with partners who provide added value chains like knowledge and expertise about chemicals, fiber, raw materials and other equipment. We can combine the best ideas and technologies available into the best solution. Joint development also include customer projects where we work as one team to reach a common goal. Energy efficiency always in mind Of all operating challenges tissue makers are facing today, the use of energy is the most critical. Energy efficiency is always a key for all product Recent developments Tissue making concepts Advantage DCT technology for cost-efficient production of plain, conventional tissue paper Advantage NTT for flexible production of premium plain and textured tissue with low energy and fiber consumption Advantage Thru-Air for high capacity production of Ultra premium structured tissue with excellent absorbency, bulk and softness.
