Residential Resource Guide Join us on the journey to zero waste. Is that achievable? Yes! Taking steps in your daily routine to reduce and eliminate waste is easy to do and this useful guide will help you set your goals and achieve savings simply by making a few different choices. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rethink = www.oceansiderecycles.org Road to ZERO Waste

Road to ZERO Waste A Message From the City of Oceanside The City of Oceanside is committed to waste diversion and recycling. Our goal is Zero Waste. To meet this goal we encourage everyone who lives, works in or visits Oceanside to embrace the Road to Zero Waste. Reduce waste first. Reuse and repair products as many times as possible, and recycle or compost the rest! Reduce and Reuse First, Recycle and Compost the Rest The key to generating less waste is to reduce the amount we buy or consume and reuse the products we purchase. 2 Making the choice to consume less provides more social and environmental benefits than recycling and composting alone. Your small daily choices and habits add up. And don t forget...buy RECYCLED! We need to close the recycling loop by buying products made from recycled materials. Look for recycled content information on the products you purchase. Successful recycling depends on every one of us. Waste reduction and recycling every day, at home, work and play is an easy and rewarding practice. Join us on the Road to Zero Waste by rethinking the way you handle your materials. By adopting more sustainable habits, we can reduce pollution, save resources and better help our community fight climate change. For more information on Oceanside s Zero Waste goals visit www.oceansiderecycles. org or email Oceanside s Zero Waste Team at oceansiderecycles@ci.oceanside.ca.us. Try these simple tips to reduce waste: Rethink disposables, stop waste before it starts. Reuse any item that can be reused or give it to a person or charity to be reused. Recycle whatever discards remain if possible. Compost your food and yard waste, it s nature s way of recycling. Check out our new mobile app which can be downloaded for free from the Apple and Android istores by searching Green Oceanside. This innovative tool will inform you about the City s Environmental services and programs like the Road to Zero Waste, Water Conservation, Stormwater Prevention and Renewable Energy. Other features include the opportunity to engage with the Green Oceanside community through photo submissions, classes, workshops and Green Oceanside events.

Resources For You The City of Oceanside has made it even easier for residents to learn if an item can be reused, recycled, composted, or rethought. Check out our new Where Does It Go? tool at www.oceansiderecycles.org to see if you re a resource wiz. Green Oceanside Campaign is a residents one stop shop for all of the City s environmental programs. Services at Your Curb Cart Service Automated waste, green waste and recycling carts come in 35-, 64- and 96-gallon sizes to accommodate your family s needs. Standard service includes one 35-gallon waste cart, up to three recycling carts, and up to two green waste carts. Recycling carts and greenwaste carts are available in all three sizes at no additional charge. Residents may choose to increase their waste cart to a 64- or 96-gallon cart for an additional fee. Your monthly service rate is based on the amount of waste generated. Residents who generate less benefit from a reduced monthly rate. If you would like to exchange your cart for a different size please call Waste Management at (760) 439-2824. Oceanside residents are allowed one free cart size exchange for each starndard service cart. Available Cart Sizes And Dimensions Waste Small 35-gallon cart 39x20x23 Greens Medium 64-gallon cart 41.6x26.7x28 Recycle Large 96-gallon cart 45.7x28.5x33.7 Recycle Today for a Better Tomorrow When an item is recycled it saves precious resources and landfill space. Recycling also helps retain the value of materials by turning them into new products. For example, a plastic bottle can become a t-shirt or playground equipment, a glass can become a new bottle or kitchen tile and paper can become toilet or tissue paper. Oceanside is on the Road to Zero Waste! Over 80 percent of what we dispose of is recyclable and it s easy to recyle in Oceanside. With residential cart service and a growing number of public recycling bins, we can all work together to reach our Zero Waste goals. Recycling is good for our environment, our economy and the future of our City. 4

Do s and Don ts to Help You at the Curb The choices you make every day impact our environment. Be an environmental steward by thinking locally and acting locally and do the right thing at your curb! Over 80% of our materials are recyclable, make sure you are recycling right by using our Where Does It Go? tool at www.oceansiderecycles.org Consider donation first for gently used household items such as furniture, appliances, electronic waste and other similar items. Make sure your carts are not damaged or inoperable. Waste Management will repair or exchange your cart at no charge. Please call Waste Management at (760) 439-2824. Reduce your waste size by searching for alternatives to your disposables. Don t place plastic bags, film plastic, or foam food containers in your recycling cart and/or green waste cart. Thank you for keeping Oceanside contamination free! Don t overload your carts. Maximum weights can be found on the cart lids. Don t place hazardous waste, sharps, and construction materials in your residential carts. For proper disposal information and to schedule an appointment please call Waste Management at (760) 439-2824. Do! Don t! Waste, green waste and recycling is collected each week. Cart Guidelines 1. Separate waste, green waste and recyclables and place into the appropriate cart. All materials must fit into the cart with the lid closed. 2. Roll carts out to the street curb line by 6 a.m. for service. Carts are required to be off the street or curb line by the end of the day. 3. Place carts with the handle facing away from the street. 4. Carts must have a minimum 2-foot clearance of any obstacles including parked cars, mailboxes and other carts. Where Does It Go? Figuring out if something should be donated, recycled, or requires special disposal services can be confusing, but the City is here to help! Visit www.oceansiderecycles. org and look for our new Where Does It Go? tool to determine what cart an item should be placed in, how to reuse it, or how you can make a better choice next time. This new tool allows residents to type in materials and find out how to properly dispose of their items. If an item requires special disposal such as used motor oil the Where Does It Go? tool will give you options on how to dispose of it properly. The Where Does It Go? tool has made it even easier for Oceanside residents to join us on the road to zero waste. From aluminum cans, electronic waste, plastic bags, and food waste this tool will help you make choices that improve your overall sustainability. Your small daily choices and habits add up. By recycling right every day at home, work and play you can help reduce pollution, save resources and better help our community fight climate change. Since 2010, the City of Oceanside has placed recycling containers along the beach, strand and harbor. These efforts earned our city recognition for the most comprehensive public recycling program in the coastal region. After each beach visit, encourage your family and friends to recycle and join us On the Road to Zero Waste. The City of Oceanside s goal is to have recycling in all public spaces. Look for recycling soon at City parks! 9

Recycling Programs to Help YOU! Being a Sustainable City means making our City safe, healthy and vibrant with opportunity and well-being for all. El Corazon Compost Facility Oceanside s Green Waste program recycles yard trimmings into high quality compost and mulch at the El Corazon Compost Facility operated by Agri Service Inc. Humic Compost and composted mulch are made from yard trimmings and are free to Oceanside residents. Compost is available for self loading and residents can load an open bed truck on the first and third Saturdays of each month between 9 a.m. to noon for a small fee. When used in your yard, these products will improve soil tilth and reduce the need for fertilizer and pesticides, helping us save resources while protecting our waterways. Plastic and waste do not compost, so please only put plant material or clean wood into your green waste cart and avoid costly contamination. Further information can be found at www.agriserviceinc.com or by calling the facility at (760) 439-9920. Interested in home composting? The City of Oceanside in partnership with Agri Service Inc. hosts compost workshops throughout the year. Make sure to visit www.oceansidesiderecycles. org for complete workshop information. Congratulations your daily routine is helping extend the life of our landfills, save precious and limited natural resources, and enjoy a healthier environment. 10
