THE MANUFACTURE OF GYPSUM PRODUCTS Most gypsum products are manufactured from a mineral rock (gypsum) that is gray to white in color and is found in abundant deposits around the world. Basic gypsum consists of calcium sulfate chemically combined with water of crystallization (CaS04 + 2H20). The combined water makes up about 20% of gypsum rock s weight (50% by volume) and gives the material its characteristic fire-resistive qualities and high adaptability to varied use. The gypsum that ends up in gypsum wallboard can come from two sources. Gypsum rock can be mined from the ground, as sources are abundant. This mineral is the second most plentiful one found on earth. Recaptured gypsum is a byproduct that can be obtained from several processes, including flue gas desulfurization (FGD). Recaptured gypsum has the exact same chemical composition as gypsum mined from the earth. Wallboard made from recaptured gypsum is the same as wallboard made from mined gypsum rock. USG gypsum boards are produced using a highly automated, continuous process. After the paper-sandwiched gypsum core has set, the boards are cut to length, dried and packaged for shipment. Rigorous quality control measures are applied throughout the manufacturing process. The constant desire to improve our gypsum wallboard product line is representative of USG s many efforts to be a leader in the production of environmentally conscious building materials. USG Interior & Exterior Panels 4

SUSTAINABILITY BEST PRACTICES AT USG USG has, over the course of its century-plus history, led the building sector s effort to develop and supply environmentally friendly, fully sustainable materials. Today, sustainability is integrated into the manufacture of every USG wall, ceiling and flooring product. For example, USG has a long history of introducing new lighter weight products and systems into the market that replace old systems while maintaining or improving systems performance. This includes the evolution of gypsum plaster on lath and steel framing to replace heavy masonry fire partitions. This evolution continued with the introduction of USG Sheetrock Brand Gypsum Panels and light steel framing and drywall screws introduced in the 1950s. With our USG Sheetrock Brand UltraLight Panels, we reduced the overall weight of building assemblies while maintaining key system performance attributes. And with our newest wallboard, USG Sheetrock Brand EcoSmart Panels, we revolutionized wallboard manufacturing, significantly reducing the need for natural resources and impact on the environment, yet still retaining all performance characteristics. These panels reduce primary or embodied energy and the carbon footprint of your building. Note: 1. Coal Combustion Residual Beneficial Use Evaluation: Fly Ash Concrete and FGD Gypsum Wallboard; United States Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, D.C. USG also makes extensive use of synthetic gypsum, a byproduct of flue gas desulfurization (FGD)a modified scrubbing technology utilized by many coal-fired power plants to reduce undesirable sulfur dioxide emissions, which is the main cause of acid rain. Synthetic gypsum is chemically produced and recovered in processes that USG helped to pioneer for its use as an alternative to naturally occurring gypsum. In terms of sustainability, synthetic gypsum provides the same chemical (calcium sulfate dehydrate) and attributes as natural gypsum. In addition, land filling of the coal combustion residual is avoided by utilizing this byproduct (gypsum) as a beneficial process (drywall manufacturing). According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the use of synthetic gypsum can also contribute to other "significant environmental benefits, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions and reduced use of virgin resources." 1 USG leads the building industry in the development of high-performance components designed to meet specifications and requirements, including sustainability, to enhance building performance and to streamline the building process. To that end, all USG interior and exterior panels have achieved GREENGUARD Gold Certification. GREENGUARD Certified products are certified to GREENGUARD standards for low chemical emissions into indoor air during product usage. For more information, visit ul.com/gg. FIRE-RESISTANT PANELS The overriding goal of all fire-resistant assembly design is to mitigate risk in the event of a fire. Therefore, it s imperative to match products and systems to the end performance desired. Having an understanding of proper product applications and the latest technologies can avoid costly job rework and delays, as well as minimize any safety risks. When it comes to fire, USG established most of the fire testing procedures currently used by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL). MOISTURE- AND MOLD-RESISTANT PANELS When it comes to residential and commercial, performance of the materials should be taken into consideration when deciding which product is the right option. When risk of moisture exposure is present, choose products and systems that offer adequate resistance. When moisture is limited during the phase, mold-resistant products act as extra protection against mold growth when incidental moisture is present. When tested in accordance with ASTM D3273, Standard Test Method for Resistance to Growth of Mold on the Surface of Interior Coatings in an Environmental Chamber, all USG moisture- and mold-resistant panels meet or exceed ASTM C1396 specifications. MOISTURE AND MOLD RESISTANCE: Panel scores are representative of independent lab tests at the time of manufacture per ASTM D3273, Standard Test Method for Resistance to Growth of Mold on the Surface of Interior Coatings in an Environmental Chamber. This ASTM lab test may not accurately represent the mold performance of building materials in actual use. Given unsuitable project conditions during storage, installation or after completion, any building material can be overwhelmed by mold. To manage the growth of mold, the best and most cost-effective strategy is to protect building products from water exposure during storage and installation and after completion of the building. This can be accomplished by using good design and practices. USG Interior & Exterior Panels 15

ABUSE-RESISTANT PANELS All commercial and institutional buildings have high-traffic areas where many people and objects pass through. Inherently, these areas are more prone to scraping and bumping, and therefore, damage. If the materials used aren t more durable than others more suitable for normal use, the condition of the walls quickly erodes. Worse yet, building owners may be faced with underperforming surfaces, increased maintenance costs and potential safety issues. But before selecting materials for your project, be sure to check with your local building code authority. Many municipalities are now adopting International Building Code (IBC ) standards that require greater levels of abuse resistance in a number of critical areas (such as exit and elevator hoistway enclosures), which ensures the safety of the property and its occupants. USG can help you address key performance issues with our comprehensive portfolio of abuse-resistant solutions that have been tested in accordance with UL and ASTM C1629, Standard Classification for Abuse-Resistant Non-Decorated Interior Gypsum Panel Products and Fiber-Reinforced Cement Panels. When specified and installed in accordance with best practices, our products can improve the total performance of the building components.
