Tuesday Thursday 6 Packaging & Packaging Graphics
Aims & Outcomes: Aims: To understand the packaging development process. To find out about how graphics are applied to packaging and used to entice and encourage the customer to purchase. To develop ideas for creative solutions in packaging design. Outcomes: Bronze: Begin to develop 3D packaging design ideas on paper (colour) and relate this to your design intentions. Silver: Explore net design and map out 3D ideas in a 2D example. Analyse the success of your ideas. Gold: Begin to develop net designs using accurate paper, then digital environment.
Design Task 11: Once you have developed promotional materials, the next step is to: Carry out further research into packaging materials relevant to your theme. Explore packaging sustainability. Develop and plan design ideas on paper before you go into the digital environment. Develop your ideas experimentally in the digital environment, noting your findings from you use of net layout, elements and design principles, using screen shots. Develop your final promotional net, graphics, and maquette ideas in Photoshop, Illustrator, & InDesign. Keep a journal of everything you do. Check that you are achieving the assessment criteria at regular intervals.
What Packaging Might you Create? Coffee Brand Boxes Jars Packets Cups Tins Clothing Brand Boxes Bags Tubes Wrapping Fast Food Boxes Cups Bags Supermarket Boxes Bags Tins Jars Packets
Research - Find out about Different forms/designs of packaging How packaging is designed How to create nets How packaging supports/protects the product Packaging sizes What materials packages are made from The graphics used in packaging How graphics are applied to packaging How graphics promote the product and communicate with the consumer
Develop skills in Drawing in 3D Designing in 3D Creating net designs Developing accurate digital nets Creating maquettes Applying graphics to nets and maquettes How graphics work on 3D packaging
Produce Research: Which supports your intentions Planning: Extensive paper based planning, including, 3D designs, nets, graphics positioning on nets. Box, bottle, tin, packet, etc. Development: Digitised versions of your nets which are accurate in mm. Maquette blanks which explore the construction of your packaging. Maquettes which explore the application of graphics. Final maquettes which include all graphics and work as containers for your product - Box, bottle, tin, packet, etc. Analysis: Use your journal, sketchbook and screen prints to record the developmental process Peer feedback Overall reflection and evaluation.
In packaging design communication between the producer and the consumer is a vital factor that must not be overlooked. Remember: Most consumers will purchase a product because of the visual language present on the pack rather than because of advertising. Packaging provides the designer with a unique challenge not only to protect and preserve, but also to present quality design that functions in both 2D & 3D environments. Surface graphics must function equally well on each side of the package, every panel communicating the brand.
The Packaging Design Process:
Initial Design Idea Sketches
Develop into 3D Design Ideas and Add Measurements
Flatten into Net Sketches
Develop to Scale on Graph Paper
Digitise to Scale
Create and Test 3D Maquette
Apply Graphics
Create final Maquette
Analyse Suitability of Final Solution
Bridge Task 9: Monday 27 th February Make sure you have completed the following and added them to your sketchbook: Your further research into packaging materials relevant to your theme. Your explore packaging sustainability. Your developmental and planning design ideas on paper. Your ideas developed experimentally in the digital environment, noting your findings from you use of net layout, elements and design principles, using screen shots. Your development of your final packaging materials Your reflective journal of everything you do. Your check that you are achieving the assessment criteria at regular intervals.
Plenary: I feel the most important thing I learnt today was? With the information I learnt today, I will now be able to After today s lesson I can now explain. Today I was able to make progress because The part of the lesson I found easiest was If was to set homework to build on today s lesson I would I am proud of myself today because.
