Product Bulletin Wind Energy Industrial bonding paste with outstanding fatigue performance EPIKOTE Resin MGS BPR 435 EPIKURE Curing Agent MGS BPH 434 439 The EPIKOTE Resin MGS BPR 435 system series was developed for outstanding fatigue performance with excellent gap filling of FRP/FRP bond lines. It weighs less, can cure faster, and is easier to process. The system is GL (Germanischer Lloyd) approved and offers a service temperature range of -6 8 C (-76 176 F). Curing speed is determined by one of three curing agents. EPIKOTE Resin MGS BPR 435/ EPIKURE Curing Agent MGS BPH 434-437 System Processing Notes Uses EPIKOTE MGS Paste 435-series is a solvent-free epoxy bonding paste with a wide range of applications. It is suitable for bonding laminates, wood and appropriately prepared metallic and mineral components. 16 16 14 14 12 12 Shear Stress [Pa] 1 8 6 4 1 8 6 4 Viscosity [Pa.s] 2 2 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 1 Shear Rate [s -1 ] Shear Stress BP 435 (D ) Shear Stress BP 435 (D ) Viscosity (D ) Sag Resistance The system has excellent sag resistance even at elevated temperatures and is ideal for adhesion of vertical surfaces and across wide gaps. This adhesive resin does not bleed from vertical gaps even when immediately subjected to high curing temperatures (up to 8 C). 1 Thickness [mm] 1 1 1 1 15 2 25 3 35 4 3
Application Direct application to non-porous material surfaces is possible. Porous, absorbent surfaces should be primed with a liquid resin system mix. The adhesive resin system can then be applied either immediately, or after it gels slightly. Adding more or less than the recommended dosage of hardener will not achieve a faster or slower reaction. Instead, it will irreversibly prevent the adhesive from ever curing completely. Mixing The resin and hardener components are pasty and must be combined very thoroughly. Blend until no cloudiness is visible in the mixing container. The yellow color of the resin component and the red or blue color of the hardener component facilitate visual verification. Pay special attention to the walls and the bottom of the mixing container. Manual mixing of higher quantities of resin and hardener is very difficult and involves high production risks. To ensure reliably high production quality, use suitable mixing or dosing machines. Curing Conditions At the end of its bench life, EPIKOTE MGS Paste 435-series first gels, then solidifies. Ultimately, this progressive curing reaction results in a dimensionally stable form strong enough to be stripped from the mold. The curing process is only complete when no further improvement in properties such as mechanical strength, or an increase in the glass transition temperature, can be achieved. It should be noted that certain curing conditions must be met to optimize crosslinking. For the EPIKOTE Resin MGS BPR 435 and EPIKURE Curing Agent MGS BPH 434-437 system to cure completely, it must be held at 6 7 C for at least 5 hours. Temperature The optimum processing temperature is between 2 35 C (68 95 F). Higher temperatures are possible, but will shorten pot life. A temperature increase of 1 C (18 F) will halve the pot life. Water (e.g., high humidity or moisture contained in additional fillers) accelerates the resin/hardener reaction. Variation in temperature or humidity during processing is not known to affect the mechanical properties of the cured product. Pot Life @ RT (25 C) 12 1 8 6 4 2 1 2 3 4 5 Time [h] 4
