Reviving Ancient Silk Road

Transportation along the Silk Road THEN NOW

Transportation along the Silk Road

Objective & Vision The new Port of Baku at Alyat provides a significant opportunity for Azerbaijan to become a key location/hub in Regional Supply Chains through the offering of a Free Trade Zone (the Zone) for Global, Regional and National Companies for their Logistics Services, Value-added Services and their Manufacturing activities the Zone is viewed as a part of President Ilham Aliyev s larger strategy to turn Azerbaijan into a hub of hubs in Eurasia!

The Port s Hub Strategy Baku International Sea Trade Port s (aka the Port of Baku) grand hub vision includes an integrated development model that links the port, Free Trade Zone, petrochemical industry, the Alyat township and other strategic transport and non-transport projects under the umbrella of a Special Legal Regime (e.g. Production Sharing Agreement).

The Port s Hub Strategy The new Port of Baku at Alyat is to become the largest Free Trade Zone in the Caspian region, fed by growing regional petrochemical feedstock and offering comprehensive logistics and value-added services to Zone residents and international clients, and serving as major regional intermodal distribution hub.

Basic Components of Successful Economic Policy in Oil and Non-Oil Sectors Azerbaijan s economic success in oil sector is President Heydar Aliyev s brand! 1. a valuable product or project (i.e. Azeri-Chiraq-Guneshli); 2. high level of political support for the project on the level of President Heydar Aliyev; 3. an attractive and competitive business climate that brought oil investors and developers to Azerbaijan; and 4. Production Sharing Agreement (aka Special Legal Regime). Azerbaijan s economic success in non-oil sector will be President Ilham Aliyev s brand! 1. a valuable product (i.e. Port of Baku and Alyat Free Trade Zone); 2. an attractive and competitive business climate culture that would bring non-oil investors and developers to the Zone; 3. high level of political support for the project on the level of President Ilham Aliyev; and 4. Special Legal Regime (law) regulating the activities in the Zone.
