Increasing concerns over climate change and the depletion of fossil fuels are leading the drive towards generating electricity from renewable sources such as sun, wind, water and plant material. Of these renewable sources, the sun is by far the most powerful, with enormous amounts of solar radiation striking the earth s surface every day. Harnessing this energy has long been a goal of man, a goal that is now becoming a reality thanks to photovoltaic systems that turn daylight into 'green' electricity. 1
Introduction Photovoltaic tile systems, wonderful for your home and the environment Pitched roofs are ideal locations for photovoltaic systems but until recently fitting a photovoltaic system to a pitched roof meant having to bolt-on an unsightly frame. In response to this Lafarge Roofing have developed two integrated photovoltaic (PV) tile systems, minimising the aesthetic impact of PV on the building and the surrounding environment. Lafarge Roofing s PV tile systems are a technical tour de force, innovative and very reliable, but their aesthetics are just as important. Both systems are fully integrated with the roof covering and blend into the roof s surface beautifully. Pitched roofs are more suitable for PV installations than flat roofs since away from the equator the radiation from the sun strikes the earth at an angle rather than coming from directly overhead. Even in the UK, and even in winter, PV systems will continue to harness solar energy. Of course the brighter the sunlight the higher the output, but our PV systems also work well in normal daylight and even cloudy conditions. Lafarge Roofing s two PV tile systems are easy to install on both new build and renovation projects and can be expanded at a later date for maximum flexibility. 2
Power stations for pitched roofs Photovoltaic panels convert daylight into DC (direct current). An inverter turns this DC into the domestically usable 230V 50Hz AC. The installation is connected to the National Grid. As soon as the system starts supplying power, this power will be used in the home first. Any surplus electricity is sold to the National Grid (subject to agreement), and any shortages are made up from the grid network. Continuity of supply To ensure total continuity of supply, your rooftop power station is connected to the National Grid (subject to the agreement of the electricity provider). If you need more electricity than your unit produces, it is drawn from the grid, guaranteeing security of supply at all times, including during bad weather and at night. There is no need for expensive storage batteries. A roof, pointing at the sun, with a slope of between 20 and 50 degrees provides the best result. The best output is achieved when the installation is placed on the south-facing side of a roof, but it is also possible to use a roof orientated between south-east and south-west. The system should not be situated in the shade of high buildings or trees, as this will reduce its efficiency. National Grid 3Power stations for pitched roofs
PV 800 PV 800 Integrates perfectly with concrete roof tiles The beautifully sleek PV 800 system is an attractive alternative to traditional bolt-on PV panels and means that generating environmentally friendly electricity from daylight need not compromise a building's design. The PV 800 system contributes to a better environment in a responsible and above all beautiful way. The system is fully integrated amongst the roof tiles, creating a sleek and aesthetically pleasing roof surface. The panels have a dual function: they serve as solar power panels and as roof coverage, with the same weather-resistant and durable properties as traditional roof tiles that are mounted onto the tile battens. The panels overlap and are mounted in the same coverage size as the roof tiles, which means they follow the horizontal courses of the roof tiles. One PV 800 panel replaces exactly four roof tiles. The PV 800 system offers considerable flexibility in the way that the panels can be arranged on the roof to ensure that they are not shaded by higher parts of the building or by trees. The flexibility of this system enables aesthetically pleasing effects to be achieved, arranging the solar panels in either rectangular blocks, in rows, or in stepped formations. Since it is modular, the PV 800 system can easily be extended or adapted in the future without difficulty. Environmental awareness has rarely looked so good. The system consists of BP PV panels, type SRT 40, weather-resistant recyclable man-made cassettes, high-quality stainless steel mounting brackets and an inverter. PV 80 PV 80 A flexible solution for tiled, slated and metal roofs Whether the sun is shining brightly or it's cloudy, a photovoltaic installation such as the PV 80 system will always do its job. The system turns daylight plentiful and free directly into electricity. An investment in a PV 80 system will therefore have immediate returns, and it is good for the environment. The PV 80 system is a universal solar power system that can be fitted with most roof coverings. Whether the roof is covered in profiled tiles, flat tiles, slates or metal sheets, PV 80 will provide a beautiful integrated solution. Panels are mounted directly onto the tile battens and specially designed eave, side and top flashing elements ensure the roof remains weathertight. PV 80 panels are larger than those used in the PV 800 system and therefore supply a higher peak power per square metre. The PV panel array must be rectangular or square but a system can be of almost any size. The PV System works grid connected within the parallel mains electrical network. The PV configuration must be rectangular or square and a system can be almost any size. PV 80 is supplied as a complete package with BP PV panels, type SRT 80, provided with mounting profiles, gutter pieces, cabling and a power inverter. Peace of Mind Peace of mind with long-lasting, weatherproof protection Like all products from the Redland range, our PV systems have been tested under storm and driving rain conditions at our unique wind tunnel facility, and are designed to meet the same wind uplift loads as the surrounding roof. Both systems are covered by the comprehensive Redland 15 Year Roof System Guarantee, when used with the Redland range of tiles and slates. The panels also carry a 25 year energy performance guarantee. Proven technology that is easy to install All PV systems from Lafarge Roofing are designed to be highly efficient and simple to build in. 8 The systems make use of highperformance standard components to deliver a high degree of efficiency. We provide a 25 year guarantee of a panel s electrical performance and, because there are no moving parts, the whole system is largely maintenance-free. The PV panels are connected in series, using ready-fitted plugs and sockets which are safe to handle and cannot be connected the wrong way round. Each PV panel array is connected to an electrical inverter which converts the direct current generated by the system into an alternating current supply which matches and is synchronised with the building s grid supply. For further guidance on the Redland range of PV systems: telephone our Customer Service Hotline on 08705 601000 Whether it is a new building or renovation project, trained installers can assemble and install panels as well as connect the PV system to the grid. You will get a good-looking, secure roof plus environmentally friendly electricity on top. Lafarge Roofing is committed to giving you complete roofing solutions and as part of that commitment we can provide you with step-by-step help with the planning and installation of your PV tile system, including explaining how to access grants available for the installation of PV systems. We can help you to assess the merits of solar energy for your particular project and calculate the size of the PV system needed. We can advise you on how best to approach your electricity supplier to arrange connection to the grid and to be credited with any surplus electricity which you might feed into the grid. Then we can help you to plan the details of the system how best to lay out the PV array to avoid shading, where to install the inverter and how best to connect it to the array. Buildings are the UK s largest user of energy and you could lead the shift towards a clean energy future. You will be installing proven technology which will add real long term value to your building and demonstrate your commitment to an environmentally responsible way to generate electricity for the future.
