Berlin: Data Urban population of 3.5 million residents A total of 1.87 million dwellings (1.9 residents per flat) 90 % of them are flats in multi-storey buildings 87 % of the dwellings are rented flats The Berlin Concept on Renovation of the Prefabricated Multi-storey Residential Building Stock 1993 to 2005 - a Case Study Berlin s energy consumption for heating and warm water Residential buildings: 20.600 GWh/a (28,6 %) Commercial buildings: 17.900 GWh/a (24,9 %) Berlin s specific energy data End-energy consumption: 72.000 GWh/a (100 %) 22 m tons CO 2 per year (6,5 tons per inhabitant) 2

Federal State of Berlin / Senate Climate Protection Activities The Federal Government recommends the Federal States to take on a pioneering role in climate protection, especially in the public sector. Berlin intends to take on this challenge. Climate protection has a cross-departmental basis in Berlin. This primarily involves the departments Environment, Economics and Urban Development. Based on the Senate's Climate Policy Working Program from July 2009, the Urban Development Department is involved with the areas nature, planning, building, housing and transport.
