Editorial Our corporate principles require us to address safety, health and environmental protection (SHE) issues with the same thoroughness and professionalism as we approach quality, productivity and cost efficiency. I would like to use the current SHE performance data to show you how we put these principles into practice at the Basel and Kaiseraugst site. This brochure documents our commitment to continuous improvement in informative 1-year comparisons. I have selected the following three points as examples that illustrate our ongoing efforts in the area of Safety, Health and Environmental Protection: Comprehensive investigation of processes in Safety, Health and Environmental Protection laboratories support and ensure safe production. This continuous work meant that the company fire brigade did not have to respond to a single serious incident in 215. 4 Safety, Health and Environmental Protection 215

Editorial The health of our employees is very important to us. A wellbeing week with a variety of activities and information stands was organised to show employees what they can do to improve their personal wellbeing and to protect their health. Environmental protection and the careful use of limited resources is one of our priority tasks. Building 1, one of the most sustainable high-rise buildings in the world, was inaugurated in the autumn. It is heated exclusively with waste heat from our production facilities and cooled with groundwater; electricity comes from sustainable sources. Communication and social spaces that extend across several storeys promote interaction between employees. All this shows why, for the seventh time in a row, the Dow Jones Sustainability Index has named Roche the most sustainable healthcare company in the world. This honour makes us proud and motivates us to continue improving. Alexander Roesle Head of Safety, Health and Environmental Protection Roche Basel and Kaiseraugst Safety, Health and Environmental Protection 215 5

People Employee health is a top priority for us We are aware that the health of our employees is a significant factor in the company s success. Andreas Riesen, Health Protection, Roche Basel Occupational accidents Accidents usually occur when several chance factors coincide. Eliminating these factors is a vision that drives our daily work in Safety, Health and Environmental Protection, yet it is one that is hardly ever achieved in full. Working days lost as a result of accidents is another parameter that can only be indirectly influenced by accident prevention and preventive healthcare measures. If several unpredictable, unfavourable factors randomly coincide and cause an adverse event involving injury in either an occupational or non-occupational context, the likely outcome is just as difficult to predict. Favourable or unfavourable circumstances determine whether a fall on the stairs results in a bruised knee or a complex fracture of the elbow Number of non-occupational accidents Working days lost through non-occupational accidents 11 1 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 1,6 1,4 1,2 1, 6 7 8 9 1 11 12 13 14 15 6 7 8 9 1 11 12 13 14 8 6 4 2 15 Kaiseraugst Basel Kaiseraugst Basel 6 Safety, Health and Environmental Protection 215

People and wrist; the outcome a near accident or an actual accident is purely a matter of chance! From this perspective it is understandable and inevitable that the reported figures for accidents and working days lost fluctuate greatly from one year to the next. This is why Roche is aiming above all to achieve a long-term downward trend in these figures, as this is the only way to show that we are getting closer to our goal of offering employees safe jobs that do not impair their health. Following an exceptionally good year in 214, our accident figures for 215 are again closer to the long-term average. However, the long-term trend is pointing in the right direction towards Safety, Health and Environmental Protection 215 7

People We train our employees to encourage them to make health a priority at the workplace and in their leisure time. Tanja Gasser, Health Protection, Roche Basel Non-occupational (leisure time) accidents Appealing leisure activities such as sport and other pursuits provide relaxation and a counterbalance to work and are exceptionally important for health and wellbeing. The corollary to this is that a lot of accidents happen during leisure time: almost seven times more than during working hours. Since several accidents occurred during 215 with consequences that involved several months of recovery, the average number of working days lost increased to almost 2. Number of non-occupational accidents Working days lost through non-occupational accidents 5 45 4 35 3 25 2 15 1 5 1, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 6 7 8 9 1 11 12 13 14 15 6 7 8 9 1 11 12 13 14 15 Basel and Kaiseraugst Basel and Kaiseraugst 8 Safety, Health and Environmental Protection 215

People However, to put these figures into perspective: after adjusting for headcount, which has increased, around the same percentage of employees were involved in an accident as the previous year; less than one working day per employee was lost overall. We organise campaigns and activities to draw attention to situations that can lead to accidents both during and after work. Examples include poor visibility in the dark, the dangers of getting distracted by mobile phones while walking, using stairs or in road traffic, and poor or no safety equipment during manual activities. Safety, Health and Environmental Protection 215 9

Environment Seizing change as an opportunity Our investments in environmental conservation are paying off. Martin Studer, Environmental Protection, Roche Basel Environmental protection was a high priority at the Basel and Kaiseraugst site in 215, as in previous years. In addition to ongoing refurbishment and new construction work, for example, a new gas turbine that produces 4.4 megawatts of electricity came on stream. Integration of this turbine into our networks will in future permit the highly efficient generation of electricity, steam and low-temperature heat. Environment Emissions into the air Emissions of air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NO x ), sulphur dioxide (SO 2 ), volatile organic carbon compounds (VOCs) and halogenated VOCs were at or below level as in previous years. The continuing low SO 2 emissions are due to the fact that heating oil has been almost entirely replaced by natural gas. Despite the new buildings in Basel, CO 2 emissions are just 2% higher thanks to our efforts to save energy and to another mild winter. This very slight increase is all the more remarkable since the 215 figures include the CO 2 emissions of all off-site locations for the first time. CO 2 emissions at Kaiseraugst dropped by 7%, another reflection of the great success of energy-saving measures there, since these savings were achieved in spite of an almost 7% increase in headcount. Safety, Health and Environmental Protection 215 11

Environment Our modern facilities offer safe, environmentally friendly production conditions for our employees and our natural surroundings. Christoph Tscharner, Environmental Protection, Roche Basel Emissions into water At approximately 2, cubic metres, the volume of industrial wastewater generated at Basel was similar to the amount generated the previous year. As in 214, the 94% biodegradability figure was well above the required threshold value of 85%. The carbon load in the industrial wastewater was again lower than in the previous year and is a clear indication of the changes that have taken place in the production facilities. Environment Recycling, re-use and disposal of waste At Basel and Kaiseraugst, we attach great importance to waste avoidance and recycling. A project to separate plastic and cardboard was started in Kaiseraugst. This resulted in an increase in the recycling quota for general waste at Kaiseraugst from 4% in 214 to 6% in 215, which in turn yielded substantial savings. The recycling quota in Basel remained about the same at 67%. We also recycle much of our chemical waste. Approximately 6, tonnes of solvent was reclaimed from production. Approximately 1,1 tonnes of chlorine-free waste solvent was reused in an environmentally friendly way, by providing an alternative fuel for sludge incineration at the local wastewater treatment facility. Resources An environmentally friendly approach to energy and resource needs We are aware of our responsibility to the environment. Environmental protection is an important aspect of our operations. Kurt Häfelfinger, Environmental Protection, Roche Basel Energy consumption Total energy consumption at Basel and Kaiseraugst in 215 rose by just 2% compared with the previous year, even though a number of new buildings were constructed and there was a further substantial increase in headcount. Implementation of the Energy Mission Statement and a number of energy saving measures resulted in a 4% increase in energy efficiency and an associated reduction in energy consumption to 116 gigajoules per employee. This is in line with the long-term trend. Energy consumption, Basel (terajoules) 1,2 1, 8 6 4 2 Energy consumption, Kaiseraugst (terajoules) 1,2 1, 8 6 4 2 6 7 8 9 1 11 12 13 14 15 6 7 8 9 1 11 12 13 14 15 Heating oil Natural gas Electricity (procured) Heating oil Natural gas Electricity (procured) 14 Safety, Health and Environmental Protection 215

Resources This improvement is primarily attributable to the new heating and cooling networks (12 C / 4 C), the systematic cogeneration of heat and cooling and the energy recovery facilities. The installation of new photovoltaic facilities enabled 457 gigajoules of electricity to be generated at Kaiseraugst. Again, all the electricity purchased at Basel and Kaiseraugst came from sustainable sources. Our employees Employees are personally responsible for safety, health and environmental protection. A wide range of training courses are provided to ensure their knowledge is kept up to date. Resources We systematically promote sustainable environmental protection. Kim Catharina Wirz, Environmental Protection, Roche Basel Water consumption The amount of water used for cooling at Basel was approximately 2% higher than in 214 despite the very hot summer in 215. This shows that systematic energy saving measures and the reuse of cooling water in circulation systems are yielding benefits. Wherever possible, the waste heat in the wastewater was again extracted in the energy recovery plant. Towards the end of 215, for example, when the ambient temperature was 1 C, it was possible to recover up to 6 megawatts of waste heat and feed it into the 4 C network. Resources In 215, six cooling towers were erected on an existing production building in Basel and brought on stream. In future these will help to reduce heat discharge into the Rhine when water temperatures are high. Consumption of raw materials and solvents Our production programmes and volumes are constantly changing in response to the market needs. Consumption of raw materials and solvents varies accordingly. We remain committed to improving our production processes and reducing raw material inputs. Principles Reporting principles We are aware of our responsibility towards the environment, society and our employees, and are committed to comprehensive, transparent communication. Alexander Roesle, Safety, Health and Environmental Protection, Roche Basel Roche Basel is the Group s headquarters and one of Roche s biggest research, development, production and marketing sites. The Kaiseraugst facility is its largest packaging and logistics centre. The production portfolio changes from year to year in response to the market and production conditions. For this reason, a comparison of the statistics for production volumes and raw material and solvent consumption in particular provides only limited information. The 6% increase in headcount compared with 214 also has a strong impact on various consumption and key figures. This report is also available in German and English on the Internet at www.roche.ch/en/standorte/ basel-hq/basel-sustainable-site.htm.
