APPROVAL FAA approval has been obtained on all technical data in this Service Bulletin that affects type design. PURPOSE On affected aircraft, the leading edge area paint may be subject to peeling, especially during flight into precipitation. This Service Bulletin provides for the installation of polyurethane protective tape (PPT) at the seam between the porous panel and painted surface of the wing and horizontal stabilizer. DESCRIPTION This Service Bulletin contains instructions for the installation of polyurethane protective tape (PPT) at the paint transition of the wing and horizontal stabilizer to the porous panel. Also, standalone instructions for PPT removal are provided to facilitate any future maintenance. WARRANTY INFORMATION Cirrus Design will cover parts and labor costs for this Service Bulletin if the work is accomplished at an authorized Cirrus Design Service Center. The Warranty Claim Form must be properly filled out and submitted to Cirrus Design in order to obtain a warranty credit. MANPOWER REQUIREMENTS Serials w/o paint damage: 2.0 manhours. If paint damage exists, contact Cirrus Design for disposition. B. Procedure - Polyurethane Protective Tape Installation (See Figure 01) 1. Acquire necessary tools, equipment, and supplies. Description P/N or Spec. Supplier Purpose Isopropyl Alcohol TT-I-735 Grade A or B Any Source Cleaning. Cotton Cloth (clean, lint free) - Any Source Cleaning. Scour Pad 7447 3M Company 888-364-3577 Adhesion Promoter 86A 3M Company 888-364-3577 Abrasion. Adhere. Masking Tape - Any Source Protection. Low Tack Tape - Any Source Protection. Rapid Tac Application Fluid RT-00321-2 or Non-Commercial Application Fluid 1 - Liquid Detergent 2 4 drops Isopropyl Alcohol 1/4 pint Water 3/4 pint Rapid Tac 800-350-7751 Any Source Facilitate PPT positioning. Plastic Squeegee - Any Source Smooth out PPT. Utility Knife - Any Source Cut PPT. Pin - Any Source Puncture PPT. 1. 4 drops liquid detergent to 1/4 pint isopropyl alcohol to 3/4 pint water. 2. Do not substitute liquid soap for liquid detergent. Soap is a fatty acid-based solution that will leave a residue when dry and interfere with PPT adhesion. 2 of 6
2. Prepare area at seam between porous panel and painted surface. a. Apply masking tape to painted surface 0.5 inch (1.27 cm) from porous panel. Repeat masking tape application along all upper and lower leading edges. b. Apply masking tape to porous panel 0.5 inch (1.27 cm) from painted surface. Repeat masking tape application along all upper and lower leading edges. c. At masked off areas, verify 0.5 inch (1.27 cm) of porous panel and 0.5 inch (1.27 cm) of painted surface is exposed. d. To prevent adhesive residue on masking tape from clogging holes on porous panel, apply low tack tape over all holes on porous panel. e. Use scour pad to abrade masked-off porous panel and painted surface. f. Solvent clean masked-off porous panel and painted surface. Dry area with clean, lint free cloth before solvent evaporates. Repeat solvent cleaning with clean cloth until free of debris. (Refer to AMM 20-30) g. Apply sufficient amount of adhesion promoter to fully wet the masked-off porous panel. CAUTION: Apply adhesion promoter only to masked-off porous panel and not painted surface. Areas where adhesion promoter is applied will accumulate dirt. Ensure adhesion promoter is not applied to areas that will not be covered with PPT. h. Allow adhesion promoter to dry for 10 minutes or until coated area is no longer glossy. 3. Apply Polyurethane Protective Tape. CAUTION: If paint damage was identified and repaired, paint must be fully cured for a minimum of 24 hours at 72 F (22 C) before applying PPT. Ensure air and application temperatures are above 60 F (16 C). Do not apply PPT over edge of masking tape. Apply PPT to porous panel within 2 hours following coat of adhesion promoter. Ensure porous panel and painted surface are clean prior to PPT application. Ensure hands are clean while working with PPT. a. Remove length of masking tape from porous panel to prevent PPT from overlapping masking tape. Retain length of masking tape on painted surface to facilitate alignment of PPT. b. Using application fluid, thoroughly spray masked-off porous panel and painted surface. c. Measure and cut PPT to length as required. To ensure sufficient length of PPT is obtained, cut PPT in excess of required length. d. Position PPT over seam between porous panel and painted surface. e. Gradually remove liner from PPT while thoroughly spraying adhesive side of PPT with application fluid, and applying PPT to seam. Lightly smooth out air bubbles at seam. Continue gradual removal of liner and application of PPT until entire seam is covered. f. To reduce friction between plastic squeegee and PPT, spray application fluid on film side of PPT. 3 of 6
g. Using squeegee with firm, overlapping strokes, smooth out PPT from the center out toward the edges in all directions. h. Dry entire area with cloth. i. Remove all remaining low tack and masking tape. j. Solvent clean entire area. Dry area with clean, lint free cloth before solvent evaporates. Repeat solvent cleaning with clean cloth until free of debris. (Refer to AMM 20-30) k. Work out air bubbles with the plastic squeegee. If air bubbles are present following application of PPT, puncture PPT at one end of the air bubble with a pin and press out with plastic squeegee toward puncture. l. Repeat at remaining seams on wing and horizontal stabilizer. 4. Allow applied PPT to adhere for 12 hours minimum and check for air bubbles. Re-squeegee and remove air bubbles if present. 5. Carefully trim inboard and outboard PPT as required. C. Complete airplane records by noting compliance with in Aircraft Logbook. 4 of 6
If future maintenance requires PPT removal, complete Procedure - Polyurethane Protective Tape Removal at required seams on wing and horizontal stabilizer. Procedure - Polyurethane Protective Tape Removal 1. Acquire necessary tools, equipment, and supplies. Description P/N or Spec. Supplier Purpose Isopropyl Alcohol TT-I-735 Grade A or B Any Source Cleaning. Cotton Cloth (clean, lint free) - Any Source Cleaning. Citrus-based Cleaner 76394 3M Company 888-364-3577 Cleaning. Masking Tape - Any Source Protection. Low Tack Tape - Any Source Protection. 2. Apply masking tape around perimeter of PPT. 3. To prevent adhesive residue on masking tape from clogging holes on porous panel, apply low tack tape over all holes on porous panel. 4. Apply citrus-based cleaner to PPT to soften adhesive. Allow citrus-based cleaner to permeate PPT. 5. Slowly peel end of PPT away from porous panel and painted surface while applying citrus-based cleaner to exposed adhesive-side of PPT. Continue breaking down adhesive while gradually peeling PPT until removed. 6. Apply citrus-based cleaner to porous panel and painted surface until adhesive residue is removed. 7. Dry entire area with cloth. 8. Remove all low tack and masking tape. 9. Solvent clean entire area. Dry area with clean, lint free cloth before solvent evaporates. Repeat solvent cleaning with clean cloth until free of debris. (Refer to AMM 20-30) 10. Perform required maintenance. Following all required maintenance, complete for any exposed seams. 5 of 6
