3M TM Dyneon TM PTFE Versatile solutions for unique challenges. PTFE Product Introduction Guide.
02 Introduction Consistently reliable. Incredibly versatile. Whenever harsh industrial environments, architectural design elements or even everyday household products call for technical excellence and outstanding reliability, 3M Dyneon PTFE is the material of choice. In a broad variety of challenging applications, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) has become indispensable due to its combination of unique properties and an almost limitless potential for problem solving. For more than 50 years, the Dyneon technical center in Burgkirchen, Bavaria has developed and manufactured high-quality PTFE products to help a wide range of industries meet new challenges. Our industry-leading research and development teams are known for innovation and technological excellence, and our company for its commitment to environmental stewardship and product responsibility. As part of this commitment, we introduced our next-generation grade of 3M Dyneon TFM Modified PTFE, setting new standards in plant safety and economic efficiency. We have helped drive environmental, health and safety (EHS) standards optimization. And we continue to strive for greater sustainability through the development of new manufacturing processes, such as the world's first up-cycling plant for perfluorinated polymers (PFP). Developed in cooperation with the University of Bayreuth, this new process will play a major role in reducing waste incineration of polymers such as PTFE, PFA and FEP, and in the responsible use of resources. This brochure contains information to help you identify the right grade of Dyneon PTFE to suit your needs. In addition to an overview of our PTFE products, you will find explanations of the differences between standard and modified grades of PTFE, along with optimized properties and performance characteristics in various industrial applications.
04 Molecular structure 3M Dyneon PTFE and 3M Dyneon TFM Modified PTFE. The linear molecular structure of classic PTFE is arranged in a helical configuration. The fluorine atoms sterically shield the carbon atoms. This structure, in conjunction with the high carbonfluorine bond energy, explains the exceptional thermal stability and chemical resistance of the material. The exceptional property profile of Dyneon TFM Modified PTFE is achieved by chemical modification and a specially tailored molecular structure. This product range bridges the gap between classic PTFE and 3M Dyneon Fluoroplastic PFA. We are continuing to expand the Dyneon TFM Modified PTFE product line with a range of specially tailored suspension and emulsion polymers.
Quality enhancement 05 3M Dyneon TFM Modified PTFE: a secondgeneration PTFE with improved properties. The second generation of polytetrafluoroethylene, Dyneon TFM Modified PTFE is a unique extension of our fluoropolymer portfolio. This modified product class offers a significantly improved property profile over "classic" PTFE: substantially lower deformation under load denser polymer structure fewer voids lower permeability smoother surfaces of machined parts higher transparency excellent weldability with special methods meets many industry specifications; FDA compliant and UL94 listed materials available Skived films under an optical microscope at 25x magnification The denser polymer structure of Dyneon TFM Modified PTFE is apparent under an optical microscope. PTFE/TFM Suspension PTFE Emulsion PTFE Non-free-flowing PTFE Free-flowing PTFE Micropowder Dispersions (TFM) Non-free-flowing Free-flowing 3M Dyneon PTFE and 3M Dyneon TFM Modified PTFE is supplied in the following forms: Free-flowing and non-free-flowing compression molding powders (suspension polymers) unfilled and filled (compounds) with carbon, glass, bronze etc. For the manufacture of semi-finished and finished products, such as pipes, rods, sheets, skived films, linings and billets. Emulsion polymer powders (paste extrusion grades) unfilled and filled (compounds) with glass, carbon etc. for processing on paste extruders. For the manufacture of wire and cable insulation, unsintered and sintered tapes, thin-walled tubings, pipe linings, sintered and unsintered cords and profiles. Dispersions: For impregnating yarns and woven fabrics as well as coating metal surfaces and fabrics an extensive range of different dispersions is available. Micropowders: Very fine-particle, low-molecular weight PTFE powders used as additives for thermoplastics, lubricants, printing inks, paint and coating systems to improve slip and non-stick characteristics.
08 Industries Main markets for PTFE 3M Dyneon PTFE meets tough demands for new applications and offers a proven history of high reliability in the following industries: Automotive Its remarkable properties make Dyneon PTFE ideally suited for selflubricating bearings, sliding elements and seals, especially when reinforced with special fillers. Chemical processing / Plant construction Dyneon PTFE is recognized for its corrosion protection capabilities and as a sealing material because of its broad and excellent chemical resistance and continuous service temperature range from -200 C to +260 C (-328 ºF to +500 ºF). Construction Because of its weathering resistance, non-stick and noncombustible properties, Dyneon PTFE offers unique advantages for modern membrane roof structures. Thanks to these same properties, PTFE has proven well suited for bridge pads and other sliding bearings in building construction and civil engineering. Consumer markets The non-stick/slip properties and heat resistance of Dyneon PTFE are essential for coating household utensils and engineering components. Electrical/Electronic engineering Dyneon PTFE offers excellent electrical insulation properties, a very low dielectric constant, high thermal stability and flame resistant properties. Semiconductor Dyneon PTFE is well suited for use in manufacturing equipment due to exceptionally low ion extractables and fusibility. In addition, the ultrasmooth surfaces of machined PTFE components enable reduced wash, rinse and dry cycles.
