Year 9 Business Studies Marketing Project Name: Submission Date: Breakfast Cereal Project 1

Breakfast Cereal Challenge Over the last few years there have been various studies into child obesity in the UK. Did you know that 25 percent of boys and 33 percent of girls aged between two and 19 years are overweight or obese? Obesity currently costs the country around 2 billion annually and shortens lives by nine years, due to the associated health problems. Task Brief You have been approached by a major food producer within the UK to help them to design and promote a new healthy range of breakfast cereal aimed at children aged 2 12. The new cereal must contain less than 4% fat and must have less than 1 gram of sodium and 10 grams of sugar per portion to help keep within recommended daily allowances. The idea behind the cereal range is to encourage children to eat a healthy breakfast every morning as it has been shown that children who skip breakfast do not perform as well at school and have a tendency to eat more sugary foods, damaging their health and affecting their weight. You have to think of a plan to market the new breakfast cereal range and make sure that it not only makes a profit but that it also takes market share away from the company s main competitor. Task 1 - write a general plan for the new breakfast cereal Your plan should include the following information but you do not have to go into great detail at this stage. 1. Name of the new cereal 2. Brief description of the breakfast cereal / cereal bar 3. What makes your cereal different from anything else on the market already? 4. How much will you charge for the product? Will it be more or less than competitor products? (screen shots of main competitors products, description of their product and why they are a competitor and information on their prices needed here) 5. Will it have any offers attached to it to try to persuade customers to try the product? (research needed into special offers, what are your different options, which might you consider using) 6. Where would you sell the cereal / cereal bar? 7. How will you advertise and promote the cereal? (research methods of promotion and decide which you think would be best for you, think about who you are targeting.) Breakfast Cereal Project 2

Task 2 Competition Research You need to collect information about existing breakfast cereals / bars that are already sold in supermarkets. You will need to study a minimum of 9 different existing breakfast cereals / bars between you. You need to find out: Brand names Types of cereal plain / sugar coated / flavoured / whole grain etc Prices Any special offers attached to them events / free gifts / linked products etc Nutritional content You need to record this information in a table (probably on Excel spreadsheet) so that it will be easy to compare the different cereals In a word document, make a table and ranking them by which has the most sugar. Task 3 Market Research You now need to find out which cereals people that you know buy on a regular basis and why they like them. Make sure that you ask adults and children as it is the parents who will be buying your new cereal! You need to come up with 10 questions to ask people and then ask those questions to 10 people that you know. You can ask a maximum of 3 questions finding out information about the person, e.g age, sex, job etc. The rest need to be help you build a successful product by finding out as much information about what people want as possible. Example questions could be: 1. What attracts you to a particular brand of cereal? 2. Are you worried about the sugar content of a cereal? 3. Do you think it is important that children eat a healthy breakfast? Some questions must have tick box options and some must require more detailed responses or chances for people to give their opinion. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Enter the results of your questionnaire answers into an Excel spreadsheet. Produce graphs to show the results of the questionnaire (this may not be possible for all questions) and explain underneath each one how the information will be useful to you in a paragraph. Extension Task You may also want to taste test different types of cereals with your family to see what they like about them. Comment on this taste test and how it will be useful. This would be excellent research and really set your project above others. Breakfast Cereal Project 3

Task 4 Designing the new cereal product Now that you have finished all of your research you need to come up with the final design for the new breakfast cereal product. This will include a very basic sketch or computer image, with some written information on the following sections: The name The type of cereal / cereal bar (wholegrain/oats/sugared/nutty etc) Nutritional content sodium / sugar / fruit levels etc o This will require research into contents of competitors cereals and you must be aiming to be one of the healthiest out there How you decided upon the design for the new cereal Task 5 Pricing the cereal product You need to explain the pricing strategy that you will use for the new breakfast cereal range. You may wish to start with one strategy while the product is new to the market and then adopt another one after it has been around for a while. You must explain the pricing strategy and why it will be suitable the advantages and disadvantages. Use the research that you carried out in tasks 2 and 3 to help you with this task. Task 6 Design the packaging for the new cereal product Using existing cardboard packaging turned inside out or by constructing your own design, you need to produce the packaging that will be used for the new cereal product. You must also produce a written task explaining what the purpose of packaging is and why yours is suitable. Remember that it is aimed at younger children so it must be suitable and easy for them to open! Make sure that the packaging looks authentic by including: Best Before Date Nutritional information A barcode Task 7 Where to sell the new cereal product You need to explain where you will sell the new cereal product and why this is a suitable place. How will it help the company to reach the maximum number of customers and try to take market share away from its competitors? Are there any tricks that you can use to make sure that your cereal is the most visible in the chosen retail outlet? Task 8 Advertising the new cereal product Design a series of suitable adverts for the new cereal product. This could be for the television, radio or a paper based advertisement for a magazine, newspaper or billboard. You need to think about suitable places to advertise the cereal product as it is aimed at children but you need to target their parents as well. Breakfast Cereal Project 4

Your advertisement must emphasis what is different about your cereal, the benefits of it and why parents should buy it for their children. Explain why your advert is suitable and what the advantages and disadvantages of this type of advertisement are. To gain extra credit you could research into the costs of different places to advertise and why this needs to be considered. Task 9 Promoting the new cereal product Decide how you will promote the cereal to the children that it is aimed at. Will you link it to a favourite TV character? Does it have a free gift attached to it? Can you collect tokens towards something? Will you give out free samples / money off vouchers at retail outlets? How will the different promotional techniques ensure that the cereal is successful? Task 10 Preparing your Dragons Den style pitch You need to create a PowerPoint with relevant notes ready to present all your information to the rest of the group. Only one group can win the investment (prize) so make sure your PowerPoint and your project is of the best possible standard. You can set it out however you like but a starting point may be to have a slide for each section (task) of your project. Task 11 Submitting the breakfast cereal project You must have; A cover page with the project name and your names All pages must have page numbers All sections must have correct titles Document must be spell checked Must be presented in a professional manner Breakfast Cereal Project 5
