Buried Bridge Benefits Build in value with Buried Bridge solutions. Good for the bottom line When comparing structure options, it is important to look at the total project cost not just the structure-only cost. Everything involved with completing a project needs to be considered. Foundation costs can be 40-50% less than that of concrete structures Many cities and counties can build with their own crews and equipment No need for large cranes Many can be assembled in just a few days Cheaper and easier to transport to remote areas than any other bridge option Valuable ABC solutions Buried Bridges are chosen for Accelerated Bridge Construction due to their speed of design, supply and installation. In most cases they are essentially designed by the time the project is awarded. Approval drawings can be provided quickly and, depending on the project and structure type, the components can be delivered within days or weeks of placing the order. Construction of Buried Bridges is also typically faster. Depending on the size of a structure, an experienced crew can typically assemble one within a few days, with backfilling immediately following. A solution for your application Almost every small to medium span bridge application will allow for a Buried Bridge option. The crossing requirements, site conditions or cost might make one type of structure a better choice than another, but Buried Bridges can fill a lot more of these needs than many people think. Buried Bridges are especially useful compared to traditional bridges when heavy vehicle loads are a factor as in mining, rail, logging, and heavily-loaded rural roads or unpaved low-volume roads. There s a Big R Engineered Buried Bridge Solution for virtually any sector or application. Our Structural Plate Products: Ultra Cor is the world s strongest steel structural plate. Super Cor is ideal for larger applications, including box culverts. Bolt-A-Plate is recommended for lessdemanding applications. Super Cor Ultra Cor Bolt-A-Plate 3 1

Transportation and Public Works Big R Buried Bridges better for the bottom line. Buried Bridges made from our Structural Steel Plate products are attractive alternatives for DOTs, counties and municipalities. They are easy to ship and install using local crews and equipment. Their geometries can be easily tailored to site and project requirements. And, with no decking or joints at the road surface, their reduced maintenance and lower life cycle costs are very attractive. With spans from 5' to 98' in a variety of corrugation profiles and structure shapes, Big R Bridge has your Buried Bridge solution. Forestry and Fish Passages Strong, durable, versatile and environmentally responsible. Progressive forestry operations rely on Big R s Buried Bridge solutions for their crossing and aquatic organism passage requirements. They install quickly in remote sites, with no need for specialized bridge construction companies. Environmentally friendly, their wide-span designs offer excellent open-flow hydraulics and fish passage properties with minimal impact on the stream bed. Galvanized steel structures have also been proven to be a greener solution than concrete structures. Ask your Big R Bridge Representative about the latest innovations in environmental crossings and retaining walls. A greener alternative With the increased demand for green construction, steel is the material of choice due to its positive recycled content and recyclability attributes. In fact, steel is the world s mostrecycled material. Steel used in Buried Bridges contains 70-90% recycled content and is 100% recyclable into other steel products. Concrete bridges can t be recycled into more concrete bridges Unity, OR - Fish Passage with Step Beveled s Less energy used in production and shipping of steel vs. concrete Zinc used in galvanizing is a naturally-occurring material and is 100% recyclable Buried Bridges will not leach harmful chemicals or compounds into the water or ground, which is often a concern with concrete structures Coos Bay, OR Drainage improvements for logging road with High Spokane, WA - Fish Passage below US Hwy 8

Buried Bridge Benefits Poland, EU, Grade Separation - Ultra Cor Arch Proven technology Buried Bridges carry loads through soil-structure interaction, meaning the bridge structure and the backfill soils act together to support the loads. Much lighter structures than traditional or precast bridges Significant savings in structure and foundation costs Little differential movement, settlement or frost heave between the Buried Bridge and adjacent approach fills No need to change pavement section or roadway maintenance across structure No bridge deck, bearings or approaches to maintain Can be tailored fit to the needs of the site or project Much more than culverts Buried Bridges are sometimes called culvert bridges but Buried Bridges offer many more benefits than culverts. Usually no invert, resulting in a longer service life Minimal impact on streambeds and habitat Handle much larger hydraulic flows Thicker steel with much higher design strength Much larger spans, more applicable for bridge applications Galvanizing weight is 50% more, adding to service life Flexible and resilient The performance of Buried Bridges is unmatched in less-than-ideal foundation conditions. Settlement tolerance for Buried Bridges is much higher than that of traditional bridges and concrete structures. In most cases, designing Buried Bridge foundations based on their ability to handle settlement will allow for a much higher bearing pressure, resulting in the elimination of deep foundations or other foundation costs savings. Superior durability and service life While it is important that the steel be the correct thickness and the galvanized layer be properly applied, service life and durability depend more on proper installation with the appropriate backfill materials and on regular maintenance. Using the structure for its intended purpose will also be a factor. Ultimately, the contractor and owner will have the greatest impact on service life. Accept a range of backfill materials Buried Bridges are dependent on strong backfill materials. In some locations, those materials are readily available on or near the site at a low cost. In other areas, that s not the case. Because of the way Buried Bridges are designed, less-than-ideal backfill materials (including on-site materials) can often be considered. This can result in significant cost savings. Customized to site requirements Buried Bridge designs are customizable to your specific site and can bring important benefits. The more distance there is between the bottom of a structure and the road elevation above, the more cost-effective a Buried Bridge can be. As an example, a 10 wide stream with sloped embankments passing 20 below the proposed road elevation might require a traditional bridge with a span of 100 or more. Alternatively, a 40 span Buried Bridge could likely achieve the site and hydraulic objectives with significant time and cost savings. Many government agencies require old culverts to be replaced with larger span Buried Bridges because of environmental regulations that limit disturbance of the surrounding area and mandate restoration of natural streambeds to facilitate passage of aquatic organisms. 12
