Fast Facts Trinseo MAGNUM ABS Resins (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) for Medical Applications

Fast Facts Unique Advantages for the Medical Market As the demand for attractive medical equipment grows, manufacturers and molders are looking for housing and enclosure materials that provide aesthetic appeal and advanced performance. More than that, they need specific properties required by the medical industry such as biocompatibility, regulatory compliance and sterilization options. Trinseo s MAGNUM ABS Resins provide the assurance that stringent objectives will be met. Produced using mass polymerization techology, they are recognized as superior in areas such as automotive, consumer electronics and high end extrusion applications, and have has been relied on for decades to satisfy the critical needs of the most demanding applications. What is ABS? ABS is acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. The combination of these raw materials results in a materials that is durable and tough with nice aesthetics. It is ideal for a variety of opaque applications that range from large and small equipment housings to drug delivery devices, inhalers, insulin pens and nebulizers. The material can be fabricated in its natural color or with a colorant additive. It can host a range of performance properties, which are both intrinsic to the material or custom formulated. What are the advantages of Trinseo s ABS? Lower Residual Monomers Trinseo s continuous mass technology allows us to implement a cleaner, purer production process with little processing aids and additives. This reduces the likelihood of substance migration from the plastic and also reduces the risk when using Trinseo ABS in sensitive applications such as medical devices. Exceptional Stability The stability of our MAGNUM ABS means less property shift over time. This is critical for materials that are exposed to different environments, cleansers, and light sources allowing for a longer shelf life of finished products. Brilliant Whiteness, Superior Self-Coloring Trinseo s MAGNUM ABS resins have an exceptionally low base color resulting in a bright natural white. This allows lower pigment levels[or loading] for coloring and a rich, pure end result. The material is also ideal for self-coloring [masterbatching]. Versatility of Design With a high melt flow, Trinseo s MAGNUM ABS Resins provide product designers with a wide spectrum of design options. Besides MAGNUM ABS s best-in-class purity and cleanliness, Trinseo offers customized compounding services to meet our customers needs for material placement and functionality. Medical coloring, improved weatherability, anti-static, and laser-marking are examples of Trinseo s existing advanced compounding solutions. The material is also more thermally stable resulting in less color change at high temperatures for more flexibility in product design. Sterilization Options Medical devices made of MAGNUM ABS resins can be sterilized by gamma radiation, ethylene oxide (EtO) gas and electron beam radiation. Materials respond favorably maintaining essential properties.

Technology Comparison Mass Polymerization Technology vs. an Emulsion Process Monomer Rubber Solvent Monomer Water Emulsifier Monomer Salts Dissolve Devolatilize Rubber Reaction Graft Reaction Coagulation Antifoam ABS SAN Reaction ABS Compound Dewater & Dry Figure 1: Mass Polymerization Process With Trinseo s mass polymerization technology, MAGNUM ABS Resins are produced in a continuous process. This provides assurance of a homogeneous and consistent product. This process also uses very few process additives resulting in a clean, pure material that is essential in the medical market. ABS produced in the mass process is consistent and has low color. Figure 2: Emulsion Polymerization Process Traditional emulsion ABS technology uses a batch reaction process. This can result in variation among batches which can be problematic. This process requires many processing additives such as emulsifiers and coagulants. These impurities remain in the ABS at detectible levels. There are many processing steps involved in this process resulting in higher color. Chemical Resistance Consistent with acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), Trinseo s formulation of MAGNUM ABS is suitable for health care environments where the material is exposed to a wide variety of surface disinfectants and cleaners. The above chart compares the mass and emulsion processes for colored, natural and white resins and their residual monomers. Other Advantages Trinseo s MAGNUM ABS Resins are the resins of choice for critical engineering applications. Advantages include: Excellent processability = more parts per hour; wide processing window Superior practical toughness = better part performance Consistency in properties and performance = less down time; improved molded part consistency Superior natural resin whiteness = less pigment needed; less cost; true color Low levels of surface plate-out upon molding = minimizes machine downtime; improves final part aesthetics Ease of solvent and sonic bondability = faster, easier assembly Committed to the medical industry Trinseo offers a wide range of different materials for single and multiple use devices and equipment housings in the medical market. MAGNUM ABS MED Resins joined our portfolio following break-through developments of CALIBRE and CALIBRE MEGARAD Polycarbonate Resins and EMERGE Advanced Resins. STYRON Polystyrene Resins complete our portfolio for medical applications.
