Agenda... Biomass / Waste to Energy Potential Why Biomass Gasification? Case Studies Energy Efficiency one of the cheapest ways to Mitigate CO2 emissions Waste Land Development Agricultural Waste 5 MW waste to Energy Project

Biomass / Waste to Energy Potential vs. Actual Biomass Waste to Energy Potential vs Actual Source/systems Potential MWe Actual Mwe Grid-interactive Renewable Power Agro residues 16,000 914 Waste Land Development 150,000 Cogeneration-bagasse 5,000 Waste to energy municipal waste 2,000 35 Waste to energy industrial waste 1,000 Distributed Renewable Power Biomass/cogeneration (non-bagasse) 8 Biomass gasifier 76 Waste to energy 11 Total 174,000 1,043

Bio Waste Crop Residue Mill Residue Animal Residue Horticulture Total Waste 75 Million MT 145 Million MT 1200 Million MT 75 Million MT 1495 Million MT This is equivalent to more than 100,000 MWe

Why Biomass Gasification... High Energy Efficiency - computer Controlled. Multi-fuel Flexibility

Types of Waste & Biomass that can be used in the Proposed Gassifier Types of Biomass that can be gasified Bagasse Palm Fiber Sawdust Bark Palm Shell Shavings Coconut Shell Paper Mill Sludge Spent Refinery Catalyst Corn Cobs/Stubble Peanut Hulls Switch Grass Cotton Gin Waste Peat Trimmings Cotton Stalks Petroleum Coke Tyre Shreds Lignite Reject Fiber Waste Water Sludge Manure Rice Husk Wheat Straw Municipal Solid Waste Palm Empty Fruit Bunch Rice Straw Other Waste Fuels Sander Dust

Why Biomass Gasification... Lower Emissions - potentially harmful contaminants is significantly minimized Biomass gasification can replace fossil fuels with green fuels. Low Maintenance and High Availablity Reduces the volume of waste sent to land fills

Case Studies A paper plant - 1 lac tons of all the waste = Rs.100 Million. A Particle Board Plant replacing of both SKO & HFO (5 Million KCals / hour) = Rs. 82 Million Fossil fuels can be substituted with green renewable energy.

Energy Efficiency... MKRC experience with over 500 companies both in India and abroad indicates a potential savings of 20%. Lowering the energy intensity of GDP growth through higher energy efficiency is critical to meeting India s energy challenge and ensuring her energy security.

EE has a negative cost of CO2 abatement A Mckinsey study of the Carbon Cost Curves reveals that energy efficiency has a negative cost per ton of CO2 avoided.

Cost of CO2 Abatement

Abatement Potential for CO2 by Sector

Waste Land Development... An excellent avenue for a Robust Fuel Linkage. 60 Million Hectares of Waste Land = 150,000 MWe Direct Employment Potential 1600 per MWe or 272 Million jobs. Cogeneration will double the potential.

Survey of Waste Land in Adilabad... BAIF Experts assessed: Average yield is expected to be 20 to 25 tons / ha Annual fall of leaves, twigs and branches can be 3-4 tons/ha. Cost of production Rs. 500-600/per ton of wood. Any waste land can be converted with appropriate energy crops.

Survey of Agricultural Waste Villages in coastal AP within a radius of 50 km surveyed. More than 2000 MT/day of agricultural waste No takers for some of the waste (Coir Pith, lops and tops etc.) Waste to energy will increase employment and revenue to the farmers.

Proposal 5 MWe project to electrify villages and and transfer the surplus power to the grid. Begin with agricultural waste Long run Waste Land Development implement in one site and develop a blue print for replication. Extend to a 1000 MWe within 5 to 10 years.

Regulations... A National Strategy for RE / Waste to Energy / Waste Land Development Consistent National Policy for RE / Waste Open Access No import duty on Capital Equipment for Waste to Energy Projects Single Window Clearance Fast Track Strategic Investment in Demonstration Projects

Sum up... Biomass Power Potential is very large 174,000 MWe Gasification has several advantages Both Agricultural Waste and Waste Land Development will create a robust fuel linkage. Start with a 5 MW pilot project and extend to a 1000 MWe within 5 to 10 years

Thank you...
