IBM Podcast [ MUSIC ] Welcome to this IBM Rational podcast, What's New in the Cloud, Rational Application Developer and SmartCloud Enterprise. I'm Kimberly Gist with IBM. IT organizations today must be able to flexibly react to changing business requirements. The ability to host Integrated Development Environments -- or, IDEs -- in the cloud reduces the time, cost and resources required for installation, configuration and maintenance. Today, Steve Weaver, IBM Rational Marketing Manager for DevOps and Cloud Solutions and Jean-Yves Rigolet, Architect for Rational IGE Images and Virtualization join us to highlight how IBM is extending IBM's SmartCloud Enterprise Images to include Rational's development solution. Steve and Jean-Yves, welcome to the podcast series. Thank you for joining us today. We're looking forward to the discussion. WEAVER: Thank you, Kimberly. Well, Jean-Yves, let's start with you. What is driving the need for accelerated delivery of software in the industry today? RIGOLET: Well, one of the first reasons that can come to -1-
mind is that the development world has becoming very challenging and agility has become the norm. So to realize that, developers and testers need to quickly get access to the right resources at that right time throughout all the development lifecycle. In other words, teams, development teams, need to deliver better quality software in a timely manner. Even if virtualization has been around all the last four decades, all around, really they are in use by individuals just for the last 10 years. Virtualization is a great way to access complete and dedicated environments to do fine-grained testing of new features in a closed production environment without even requesting [real ones to the] operation. Unfortunately, by doing so, teams quickly end up with hundred of VMs with no idea what's in them, where they are, what they're for, et cetera. In other words, development teams need governance that only cloud computing can bring to virtualization. Well, great. What would you say are the opportunities, Jean-Yves, for organizations to deploy IDEs in the cloud? RIGOLET: Well, agile is important, but what's the point of doing daily builds, for example, when you're not able to -2-
provide environments to test applications that you can build in less than days or even weeks. So, because of this, cloud computing can push people to not just only get this availability of virtual machines but also get governance around it. And as you may also need sometimes to just having to manage all your desktop applications, but you may be a little bit tired of managing all these applications and desktop applications. So, just imagine the work to apply, for example, software and OS emergency patches, well, especially for large companies with tens or hundreds or even thousands of developers. This is a lot of work for everyone, and having this kind of governance provided by cloud infrastructure helps a lot organizations and large companies. So, then, to realize what a cloud based integrated development environment is something that could be brought to you and not just something that is residing on everyone's or every developers' and testers' desk but something that would be brought to you. It won't change the way that you write code, of course, as a developer or share it with development teams but it will probably change the way you can test code and access your environment and get your environment provided to you. -3-
So what we've got there, well, the offering is composed of a remote access to your environment that you can provide through this SmartCloud Enterprise infrastructure. So you select an image of the IDE that you would like to access -- like for example, we've got tools to cover various things from advanced and mobile web applications using Rational Application Developer. But also we've got UML modeling or design or model driven applications that could be brought to you using Rational Software Architect. But also, tooling for the enterprise [context] for maintaining, modernizing enterprise global RPG applications using tools like Rational Developer for System IBM or [INAUDIBLE] or system software. So along with this practitioner's tool that we've got all the IDE [INAUDIBLE] but we've been building includes collaboration tooling through Rational Team Concert that is also included to leverage all the development and testing. One other thing that we've got inside the image provided to you as a developer is the installation...the IBM Installation Manager. And Installation Manager is important to get inside your environment for you to just customize precisely the level of functionalities and features that you want into your environment. -4-
And not just to get access to thousands or hundreds of perspectives and wizards and things but just to be able to set up and reduce the scope of your environment to what you exactly need to conduct your task, your development tasks on a daily basis. A great list of options, Jean-Yves, and the offerings that IBM is putting out there for everyone to consider. Steve, would you let us know what other cloud solutions does IBM offer for developers? WEAVER: Yes, absolutely. So beyond having the integrated development environment available on SmartCloud Enterprise, there actually are a number of other Rational solutions that are now available in the cloud or can certainly take advantage of the cloud in order to help developers do their job much more effectively. One of the more recent ones that we just announced a couple of months ago is the Rational Collaborative Lifecycle Management toolset which includes things like Rational Team Concert, Rational Quality Manager and Rational Requirement Composer is now available as a service of the IBM SmartCloud Application Services, Platform as a Service. So what that means is that customers can get up and running -5-
very quickly on our solution and use it in a pay as you go way, so they can pay a monthly subscription cost and have access to all of Rational's tooling on the cloud. So, this is actually the first time that we've been able to offer this on the IBM public cloud on SmartCloud. And we think that it's a really great solution for customers who may not need to do software development on a regular basis or need the extra capabilities that are available on the cloud. So that's something that we're really excited about. We also have solutions available for our SmartCloud Foundation, which is our private cloud offering. Things like the Pure Application Systems and IBM Workload Deployer. We have solutions available that allows developers to deploy applications very quickly to those platforms as well. So we think we have a very broad range of solutions that will help developers both build applications, deploy applications to the cloud and then also leverage the cloud in order to be able to development faster. And this really ties into overall DevOps story which enables organizations to bridge the gaps between the development teams, the testing teams and the deployment teams and the operations teams. -6-
It allows us to use the cloud in a way that allows us to make sure that as we move our applications through every step of the process, from development through test to production, we can ensure that the environment that they're developing or testing on are exactly the same as production. And cloud is a really big part of that, so I think moving forward, you're going to see a lot more integration between our DevOps solution and our cloud solutions. All in all, though, what it means is that the cloud is really a vital part today of the developer's toolkit and these solutions like the ones that Jean-Yves just mentioned are really a big part of that and getting us closer to those goals. Well, thank you Steve and Jean-Yves. A great discussion on integrated development environments and the solutions that IBM has to offer. We sincerely appreciate you both taking the time to join us and share your expertise. WEAVER: RIGOLET: Thanks very much, Kimberly. Thank you, Kim.
