Persian Type Culture Collection (WDCM 124) Training Course of Microbial Resources Information Management and Utilization for Developing Countries 2-15 September 2014, WDCM Institute of Microbiology, CAS, Beijing, China Farzaneh Azizmohseni, Director of PTCC
PTCC at a glance Founded in 1982, by Prof. Nassrin Moazami Member of WFCC (World Federation of Culture Collections) since 1985 WDCM 124 Recognized as regional reference center (west and central Asia),Tehran MIRCEN in 1995 Certified to meet the internationally valid quality standard of ISO 9001:2008 since 2011 Contains more than 3000 bacteria, yeast and fungi strains in public section http://ptcc.irost.org ptcc@irost.ir
Main Functions: PTCC at a glance Preservation and provision of microorganisms for scientific, industrial, agricultural, environmental and medical research, teaching and other area of biotechnology and applied microbiology. To supply scientists, research and academic institutions with PTCC strains To act as an internationally recognized collection centre for the deposit of microorganisms, and other biological materials which have been cited in scientific literature or which are used in national or international test procedures To function in a confidential manner, as a centre for the safe deposit of biological material Providing information about the microbial strains which are

Deposit of Microorganisms
Public deposit Makes up the bulk of PTCC's holdings Distribution from public collection to the scientific community The deposits are catalogued and publicly available for further study In the case of description of new species and subspeicies the accession numbers of at least two publicity accessible service collections in different countries are needed The information is published in catalogue.
Safe deposit Safe-deposited material is neither catalogued nor distributed to third parties The information related to the strain and the depositor remains strictly confidential The depositor should pay the price of maintenance Two options are possible: 1- The material is deposited for an undefined period 2- The material is deposited for a predefined period Strains of the safe deposit collection are only available to the depositor or to third parties with the written authorization of the depositor
The strains are preserved by freeze drying and cryopreservation (liquid nitrogen as well as Ultra freezers) Preservation Conditions The viability of the strains will be checked periodically. In the case of safe deposit the depositor will be received a subculture resulting from the yearly viability test. The depositor will validate the authenticity of one the samples from freeze dried

6- Increase efficiency by improving use of time and resources The Benefits of QMS Establishments 1- Monitoring all the processes in PTCC 2- Assessment the customer satisfactions 3- Traceability of the distributed strains 4- Data gathering and analysis twice in a year (Internal audit) 5- Achieving greater consistency in the activities involved in providing products or services
The Number of holdings More than 2000 Bacteria species More than one third of these have not been characterized! More than 500 fungi strain and only about one fifths have been characterized! About 70 yeast strains, mostly characterized, because they have been purchased from other culture collections.
PTCC Program for expansion 1- Publication of our DNA Bank until February 2015 2- Establishment of Microalgae collection until the end of 2016 3- Meeting the requirements of PTCC s laboratories accreditation schemes based on ISO 17025 to June to August 2015 4- Creating customer database for tracing the PTCC strains in the country (Need WDCM help!)
