Industry Tailor-made Solutions for Versatile Applications Sika Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Technologies

Advanced Solutions Secure connections backed by experience and know-how The many different applications of pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) undoubtedly make them one of the most fascinating groups of adhesive products. For more than half a century now Sika has been developing and producing PSA with different performance characteristics for a wide range of applications, and has consequently amassed a wealth of experience in every area of adhesive technology. Water-based dispersions, solvent-based systems, hotmelts or UV hotmelts: Sika can supply the right solutions to meet specific customer needs. Global presence means that Sika has people right there to find out what those needs are. Here at Sika we work together with our customers to develop PSA that are tailored precisely to the customer s individual requirements both in terms of production engineering and performance specification. Naturally all adhesives are manufactured to the very highest standards, as documented in the certification to quality standards ISO 9001, QS 9000, VDA 6.1 (summarized in ISO / TS 16949). Customer satisfaction is Sika s paramount aim. Product development is based on a clearly structured project management system, which guarantees quick and efficient development of PSA for each individual area of application. Of course customer care does not cease with the end of the project: Sika s project engineers and Technical Service personnel are there to ensure that customers carry on using the adhesives safely and without problems. This brochure offers a brief introduction to our complete range of PSA technologies: water-based dispersions, hotmelts, UV hotmelts and solvent-based systems. The featured adhesives and applications are designed to give you an idea of just how versatile these products are though of course we can only show a selection of possible applications here. So: When can we develop an adhesive to meet your required needs? State-of-the-art measuring equipment ensures that PSA are developed to a precise specification and the highest quality standards The project management team develops tailor-made solutions for almost every kind of application quickly and efficiently Determining peel strength on the tensile testing machine 2 3

SikaColl Water-based adhesive dispersions The SikaColl family of water-based PSA combines outstanding technical performance including excellent resistance to ageing and temperature extremes, plus low fogging levels with the environmental and safety benefits associated with a water-based product. A key feature of a good PSA is precise adjustment of required properties of the dried adhesive film. Equally important, of course, is an excellent performance in terms of processibility. This is why Sika s product development process involves as a matter of course the adjustment of key parameters such as rheology, drying behaviour, etc. to suit the proposed application method. This ensures that our customers get the best possible coating characteristics for their particular needs. Adhesives with special properties are needed for labels in direct contact with foodstuffs SikaColl for different plaster types The SikaColl water-based adhesive dispersions include formulations based on pure polyacrylics as well as resin-modified types. Depending on customer requirements, we can supply PSA ranging from the easily removable to the super-permanent. The areas of application for SikaColl adhesive dispersions are as varied as their performance characteristics. A wide range of adhesive tapes for the construction and manufacturing industry or household use, self-adhesive foams and non-woven materials, as well as labels of every kind: these are just some of the typical uses for our adhesives. Due to quality consistency and reliability our adhesives meet the demands and are being used also in self-adhesive applications in the aircraft industry. Tapes for countless masking applications are made with Sika PSA Some typical applications for SikaColl adhesive dispersions Adhesive tapes for the construction industry, manufacturing industry and home use Hook and loop tapes Self-adhesive foams, felts and non-woven materials Labels for various applications Self-adhesive hook and loop tapes Total transparency: The «no label look» with SikaColl 4 5

SikaMelt PSA Hotmelts The SikaMelt family of PSA hotmelts is based variously on thermoplastic rubber and polyolefins. SikaMelt products offer significant advantages in processibility, since no drying is necessary. SikaMelt adhesives meet a very wide range of customer performance requirements. Job done in every walk of life SikaColl adhesive dispersions are available in a choice of pack sizes. The photo on the right shows a 1000 litre PE container being filled High tack and strong adhesion combined with good moisture resistance are just some of the available performance benefits, while the products can also be applied using a variety of different techniques. SikaMelt PSA have countless practical applications. Whether used on security labels, self-adhesive soundproofing materials in household appliances, transfer films or on closure systems, e.g. for babies nappies: SikaMelt products do the job in every walk of life. SikaMelt for barcode labelling SikaMelt UV PSA Hotmelts No drying necessary SikaMelt UV PSA hotmelts combine the advantages of a hotmelt with the adjustable properties of a crosslinking adhesive. For this reason SikaMelt UV PSA hotmelts are used for applications requiring maximum resistance to heat and plasticizers. Since SikaMelt PSA are 100 % systems that require no drying cycle, the coating lines can be kept more compact so that they take up much less space in the production plant. Another reason why SikaMelt products are becoming more and more popular with manufacturers. Luggage identification worldwide: SikaMelt PSA guarantee secure adhesion in all weathers SikaMelt and SikaColl for various paramedical applications Effective protection against theft with self-adhesive security labels Because the performance characteristics of the adhesive film can be adjusted by varying the UV dose, one basic adhesive can be used for many different applications. From medical adhesive tapes or plasters to high-temperature labels for use in a vehicle engine bay: the SikaMelt family of UV-cured products covers a host of difficult or critical applications. SikaColl Solvent-based PSA For really demanding applications where maximum water resistance and high tack are called for, our SikaColl range of solvent-based adhesives offers the ideal solution. Self-adhesive films that peel off without a trace: just the thing to protect vulnerable surfaces Solvent-based PSA are the original «classics». The additional environmental and safety costs associated with their use are justified by the unique performance characteristics of these adhesives. Rapid drying times Solvent-based PSA also offer advantages in the coating process, such as very rapid drying and very effective wetting of the coated substrates. Wide range of applications SikaColl solvent-based PSA are available in rubber-based and acrylic-based formulations, so the range of applications covered by this product group is virtually unlimited. Typical applications range from flying splice adhesive with super high tack (for web splicing when changing paper rolls at very high calander speeds) to the coating of protective films that can be peeled off cleanly without leaving any adhesive residues. Self-adhesive document wallets coated with SikaColl or SikaMelt allow important documents to be dispatched safely in all weathers SikaColl and SikaMelt adhesives for self-seal envelopes and other closure systems Product Description Base polymer Solids content Typical applications SikaColl -4550 Very high-tack, Thermoplastic rubber 70 % approx.
