SCOPE: Sellers shall use this specification to verify the temper requirements of the applicable Northrop Grumman purchase order, material specification and/or engineering drawing. III. PURPOSE: This document describes the requirements for final temper inspection and part acceptance of aluminum alloys, steel alloys, cast magnesium alloys, and copper alloys by electrical conductivity measurements and/or hardness testing. The electrical conductivity and hardness values listed in this document shall be utilized to verify temper for final part acceptance. Values measured not meeting these requirements shall be submitted via an RCI for evaluation. These tables apply to all parts in their final temper as specified within. The origin of the final heat treatment is not a factor affecting the use of these tables. Unless otherwise stated on the Engineering drawing or material specification, the electrical conductivity and hardness requirements listed in this document shall apply. Measurements that do not meet the electrical conductivity and hardness values specified on the Engineering Drawing shall be submitted via a SMRR (Seller Material Review Report) per QOS-0035. For aluminum alloys in the original mill supplied temper, where no re-heat treatment was performed, the following applies: Inspection of this product shall consist of conductivity only. Hardness inspection is not required. When no conductivity value is provided in the applicable material specification the values in QOS-0021 shall be used. (516) 575-3767 Page 3 of 40

III. PURPOSE: (continued) NOTE: Material requirements on some NGC drawings reference materials that are received in a final temper condition. These are materials whose final temper condition is only produced from a mill. An example is Aluminum alloy 7050-T76511 extrusion. If the drawings pertaining to these materials does not contain a process code for heat treatment or hot forming (hot forming allows re-heat treatment under certain conditions) these parts may not be heat treated, annealed, or aged in the process of part manufacture. The intent of these drawings is to manufacture the part from the material in its as supplied final temper. IV. ASSOCIATED DOCUMENTS: The current issue of the following documents shall be considered a part of this specification to the extent indicated herein. VII. REQUIREMENTS: Materials covered by this specification shall meet the hardness and/or electrical conductivity requirements as listed in the applicable tables herein, unless otherwise specified on engineering drawings or referenced specifications. VIII. DEFINITIONS: The following definitions shall apply to terms that have uncommon or special meaning as used in this specification. Aluminum Alloy Plate - A rolled product rectangular in cross section with thickness of 0.250 inch or more in nominal thickness. Direct Reading Conductivity Instrument An analog or digital electronic instrument and probe that displays the conductivity of a nonferrous metal under test in percent IACS. Edge Effect The disturbance of the magnetic field and eddy currents due to the proximity of an abrupt change in specimen geometry (edge). Lift Off The effect observed in the electromagnetic test system output due to a change in magnetic coupling between a test specimen and a probe coil whenever the distance between them is varied. International Annealed Copper Standard (IACS) An internationally recognized standard of electrical conductivity where copper equals a designation value of 100. (516) 575-3767 Page 5 of 40

IX. HARDNESS TESTING PROCEDURE: The procedure specified in American Society for Testing and Materials test method procedure ANSI/ASTM E-18 and applicable equipment operation manuals shall be used for all hardness testing. With the exception of cladding on aluminum materials (refer to applicable table), hardness shall be performed on bare material surfaces whenever possible. Surface conditions, such as, but not limited to, coatings, surface treatments and/or finishes may interfere with temper inspection. Refer to the applicable inspection specification and/or engineering organization for specific inspection requirements through surface conditions. Removal and subsequent restoration of pre-inspection surface finish, when required, shall be coordinated with the applicable Northrop Grumman engineering section. Surface preparation shall be described in ANSI/ASTM E-18. Only calibrated/certified hardness test instruments may be used. Note 1: Rockwell Standard Hardness Abbreviations: All hardness designations have been abbreviated due to space limitations on the chart(s), i.e.; B, 15T scale etc. refers to HRB, HR15T. This is the standard industry practice to express Rockwell hardness. Note 2: Specification ASTM E18 requires for Rockwell B scale the use of a carbide ball penetrator. Carbide balls have superseded the former use of steel balls. Rockwell B scale readings using the carbide ball penetrator shall be designated as HRBW. (516) 575-3767 Page 6 of 40

X. ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY PROCEDURE: The procedures specified in MIL-STD-1537 shall be used with the following additional requirements: Only a direct reading electrical conductivity test instrument operating at a frequency of 60 KHz (+/-5 KHz) shall be used. For the purposes of standardization and simplification, conductivity tables for special conditions such as: thin gauge, clad aluminum, surface curvature, edge effect, and surface coatings, have been developed using the Hocking Autosigma 2000, test instrument and (0.71 inch diameter) straight probe system. When correction factors are needed to cover other conductivity test instruments or conditions, contact the Technical Services Laboratory for further instructions. Only calibrated/certified test instruments and standards may be used. Certification will be performed at least annually using a documented procedure. Lift-off shall not exceed.020 inch in order to maintain system accuracy. The lift-off check (paragraph 4.3.1.2) of MIL-STD-1537 shall be performed daily for all instruments used. If you do not know your instrument lift-off limitation, conductivity readings or part/material with nonconductive coatings greater than 0.003 inch in thickness shall not be used to accept/reject unless the following procedure is used: a. Obtain average thickness of nonconductive coating on inspection part/material. Use an Isoscope or equivalent to determine coating thickness. b. Place probe on conductivity reference standard closest to expected inspection part/material conductivity and note percent IACS. c. Place a nonconductive shim, equivalent to inspection part coating thickness, on the standard. Place probe on shim and note percent IACS value. Proceed with inspection if; 1. The difference between readings is not more than 0.5 percent IACS. 2. The difference between readings is greater than 0.5 percent IACS and the nonconductive coating has been removed from the inspection surface. (Use bare material values when excessive nonconductive coatings are removed.) (516) 575-3767 Page 7 of 40

X. ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY PROCEDURE: (continued) 3. The difference between readings is greater than 0.5 percent IACS and lift-off correction factors are available for your conductivity test instrument. Conductivity testing shall be performed at sufficient locations to ensure that the entire part meets the requirements. a. At a minimum, three (3) readings are required. One on each end and one in the middle of the part. b. The minimum and maximum values of all readings taken shall be recorded. c. For each individual part, all values must be in the required range and the maximum allowable variation across all measurements is 3% IACS. For example, The acceptable range for bare 0.063 7075-T6 aluminum is 29.5 34.5. If the minimum reading is 30.5%, the maximum acceptable reading is 33.5%. Each instrument shall be equipped with a minimum of three standards. One of these standards shall be in the 25 to 32 percent IACS range, one in the 37 to 43 percent IACS range and one in the 49 to 61 percent IACS range. These standards shall be used for all standardization procedures. Verification of acceptable temperature compatibility (+/- 2 F) between the test instrument probe, conductivity standards, inspection area and parts/materials shall be performed prior to testing initiation. Parts/materials and test systems that have remained in the same inspection area/condition for a minimum of 1 hour are considered acceptable. A touch temperature probe may be used to verify temperature acceptability at anytime. If temperatures are not +/- 2 F, allow the parts/material and test system to remain in the inspection area until they meet temperature requirements. The material/parts tested shall have a surface finish of Ra 150 or finer and shall be free from visible oil, grease, dirt or contaminants. The specimen area to which the eddy current instrument probe is applied shall be at least as large as the eddy current field generated by the probe. This can be determined by placing the probe on a flat test specimen and moving it towards an edge while observing the reading. The distance from the center of the probe to the edge at the point when the readings begin to change is the radius of the probe field. Twice the value of this radius therefore represents the minimum diameter of a circular area required for valid conductivity measurements. (516) 575-3767 Page 8 of 40

Materials covered in this specification shall meet the respective electrical conductivity and/or hardness values as listed in the appropriate tables, as applicable, unless otherwise specified on engineering drawings or referenced specifications. Special considerations for thickness effects, surface curvature and cladding of aluminum alloys have been addressed in accordance with the requirements of the respective tables. X. ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY PROCEDURE: (continued) Other conductivity test instruments equivalent to the Hocking Autosigma 2000 may be used. Operating frequency shall be 60KHz +/- 5KHz. XI. TABLES: 1. Electrical Conductivity for Bare Thin Gauge Aluminum Special Conditions Procedure #1 (Hocking Autosigma 2000) 1. Find the minimum material acceptance limit values (uncorrected) in the left hand column of table VIII. Read across the columns until you are at the applicable part/material thickness. Note this value as the corrected minimum acceptance limit. 2. Repeat the above procedure to obtain the corrected maximum acceptance limit, except use the maximum material acceptance limit value (uncorrected) 3. For material acceptance limit values (uncorrected) that have a fraction of a percent IACS, the corrected values can be obtained by interpolation. Use the corrected table values on both sides of the fractional, uncorrected part/material value being evaluated and an appropriate rounding technique. 4. The measured conductivity values obtained from the inspection part/material shall be between the corrected acceptance limits to be acceptable. Electrical Conductivity for 3003 and 6061 Clad Aluminum Alloys (Table XI) (Hocking Autosigma 2000) Special Conditions Procedure #2 (Hocking Autosigma 2000) 1. Find the minimum material acceptance limit value (uncorrected) in the left hand column of the table. Read across the columns until you are at the part/material thickness. Note this value as the corrected minimum acceptance limit. 2. Find the maximum material acceptance limit value (uncorrected) in the left hand column of the table. Read across the columns until you are at the part/material thickness. Note this value as the corrected maximum acceptance limit. 3. Notes: Conductivity readings on clad material shall not be used to accept/reject parts unless: 1. The following clad correction factors as determined on the Hocking Autosigma 2000 are applied. 2. Clad has been removed from the inspection area and subsequent conductivity testing is performed on bare material. a. Clad removal and restoration shall be coordinated with the applicable Northrop Grumman Engineering Section. (516) 575-3767 Page 26 of 40

Electrical Conductivity Correction Factors for Curved Surfaces (Table XII) Special Conditions Procedure #3 Hocking Autosigma 2000 a. Use a probe fixture that is made for curved surfaces. b. If a probe fixture is not available, use the following technique for measuring the conductivity: 1. Place the probe on the part surface. 2. Slowly rock the probe back and forth and watch for the maximum reading. 3. Record the maximum reading. c. For part/material thickness equal to or greater than 0.063 inch, do the following: 1. Find the minimum material acceptance limit value (uncorrected) in the left hand column of Table XII. Read across the columns until you are at the curvature diameter. Note this value as the corrected minimum acceptance limit. 2. Find the maximum material acceptance limit value (uncorrected) in the left hand column of Table of Table XII. Read across the columns until you are at the curvature diameter. Note this value as the corrected maximum acceptance limit. 3. For material acceptance limit values (uncorrected) that have a fraction of a percent IACS, the correction values can be obtained by interpolation. Use the corrected table values on both sides of the fractional, uncorrected curvature diameter value being evaluated and an appropriate rounding technique. d. For part/material thickness less than 0.063 inch, do the following: 1. Go to Table VIII and obtain the minimum and maximum acceptance limit values for thin gauge material by following special conditions procedure #1. The resultant corrected values from the thin gauge table become the uncorrected values for the surface curvature Table XII. (516) 575-3767 Page 28 of 40

Electrical Conductivity Correction Factors for Curved Surfaces (Table XII continued) 2. Find the minimum material acceptance limit value (uncorrected) in the left hand column of Table XII. Read across the columns until you are at the curvature diameter. Note this value as the corrected minimum acceptance limit. 3. Find the maximum material acceptance limit value (uncorrected) in the left hand column of Table XII. Read across the columns until you are at the curvature diameter. Note this value as the corrected maximum acceptance limit. 4. For material acceptance limit values (uncorrected) that have a fraction of a percent IACS, the correction values can be obtained by interpolation. Use the corrected table values on both sides of the fractional, uncorrected curvature diameter value being evaluated and an appropriate rounding technique. e. The measured conductivity values obtained from the inspection part/material shall be between the corrected acceptance limits to be acceptable. NOTES: 1. For test instruments other than Hocking Autosigma 2000, conductivity readings on parts/materials with a convex surface curvature of less than 6 inches in diameter or a concave surface curvature of less than 20 inches in diameter shall not be used to accept/reject unless the applicable curvature correction factors are available for the specific conductivity test instrument and have been approved by the Technical Services Laboratory.
