Class: Heat-treatable steel Specification 16-09 ALLOYED STEEL FOR QUENCHING AND TEMPERING, HIGH STRENGTH Class No.:11 JED 723 Previous Edition Abbreviated Title 15-07 All.steel f.quen.a.temp, h.str. 8 007 2 4 1 Scope The specification refers to alloyed steels for quenching and tempering with high strength. There are two types: JED-723-0 steel alloyed with chromium, in quenched and tempered condition; JED-723-1 steel alloyed with chromium-nickel-molybdenum, in quenched and tempered condition, or in hardened condition, if indicated in the drawing; JED-723-2 steel alloyed with boron, in quenched and tempered condition; JED-723-3 steel alloyed with chromium, molybdenum and boron, in tempered condition or in hardened condition; JED-723-4 steel alloyed with chromium and molybdenum, in quenched and tempered condition; JED-723-5 steel alloyed with chromium and molybdenum and addition of sulphur for machinability in quenched and tempered condition; JED-723-6 steel alloyed with nickel, chromium and molybdenum, in quenched and tempered condition; JED-723-7 steel alloyed with chromium, nickel and molybdenum, in quenched and tempered condition; JED-723-8 steel alloyed with chromium and molybdenum, in quenched and tempered; JED-723-9 steel alloyed with chromium and molybdenum, in soft annealed condition. If JED-723 is quoted on the drawing, version JED-723-0 shall be applied. 2 General requirements The finished parts shall be homogeneous and free from pores, blisters and other defects. The surface shall be smooth and bright and free from grooves and corrosion pits. The parts must not show any defects such as cracks, voids etc. within their structure. The hardening requirements for finished parts can be taken from the drawing or the special part specification. Else the strength requirements given in this specification apply. All materials, even ingredients in small quantities (e. g. cadmium), which are detrimental to health or to the environment are banned from being used. JED-723 : 16-09 Page 2 For steel parts, a surface protection which is appropriate for the application intended (galvanizing, varnishing) must be carried out in order to ensure corrosion prevention. This specification lists minimum properties resulting as a summary from different national and international standards. For the supply of products only one of those materials may be chosen which is released in one of the documents Release of Material belonging to this specification. If narrower limits for the material properties than defined in this specification or additional requirements are defined in the standards referenced there, these narrower limits are binding for deliveries and the additional requirements apply as well. 3 Thermal range of application Continuous operational temperature range: - C to +0 C For the thermal range of application of the finished parts the range of application of a possibly applied surface coating has to be taken into consideration. 4 Properties 4.1 Mechanical properties The mechanical properties of the parts must be according to the heat treatment required in the corresponding drawing. If no requirements are indicated in the drawing, the following requirements have to be fulfilled.
