Did You Know As much as 60% of your home s energy use goes toward heating and cooling. That s why it makes sense to consider the energy-efficiency of your furnace and central air conditioner. Take advantage of Save on Energy incentives when replacing your central heating or cooling system. Participation is easy: Find a participating contractor Purchase and install an eligible ENERGY STAR certified furnace or air conditioner Your contractor will complete the incentive forms, send it to you to review and submit You receive an incentive cheque in the mail! TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR HOME'S ENERGY-EFFICIENCY Having your furnace serviced annually by a licensed HVAC professional can improve the efficiency of the unit and help you save money. Don't heat unused rooms - close the heat registers and close the door. Open your curtains and blinds to let the sun warm the room, and then close them at night to reduce heat loss through windows. Whenever possible, use the microwave, toaster oven or barbecue instead of the stove. Wrap your electric hot water heater with an insulating blanket. Be sure it's CSA certified. Replace incandescent light bulbs with LEDs. A clean furnace filter will help your heating system work better, use less energy and last longer. What s a kilowatt-hour? A kilowatt-hour kwh is a unit of energy that represents the amount of work done over an hour. It is the amount of energy needed to power a 20 watt LED light bulb for 50 hours. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? Take the wattage of the appliance, multiply by the number of hours you use it, and divide by 1,000. This will give you the kwh. 1,500 watts X 4 hours per day / 1,000 = 6 kwh Multiply the kwh by the time-of-use price (mid-peak or on-peak, etc.) to get the cost for using that appliance for one day. 6 kwh X 13.2 cents (mid-peak) = 79.2 cents per day Now, multiply by 30 to give you an approximate cost for using that appliance for one month. 79.2 cents X 30 days = approximately $23.76 /month*^ 1,500 watts SPACE HEATER used for 4 hours/day mid-peak = $23.76/month* on-peak = $32.40/month* AIR CONDITIONER 900 watts WINDOW A/C used for 4 hours/day mid-peak = $14.25/month* on-peak = $19.44/month* *based on 30 days ^example is calculated using electricity prices for time-of-use only, does not include Delivery or Regulatory Charges TIME REALLY IS MONEY Don t let a high watt appliance lead you to think that an appliance is inefficient as it may only be in use for a short period of time. You may want to look at your total costs over time. Be sure to look at what you re using and for how long. You may be surprised with how making simple adjustments to your energy use can make a big difference in your bill. For more information, tips and resources, visit 9

Electrical Safety AT HOME at Home & Outdoors Become familiar with your home s electrical equipment. The Electrical Safety Authority ( ESA ) suggests a few common signs that could signal a potential hazard and how homeowners can avoid them.
