ELECTRICITY AT WORK REGULATIONS 1989 One Day Course MODULE A: LEGAL REQUIREMENTS Objectives By the end of this Module, participants should understand: (d) the legal status of the Regulations and their relationship to other relevant legislation, such as the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992 and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1992; the structure of the Regulations; the definitions contained in Reg.2, and the meaning of certain other keys words and phrases; who have responsibilities under the Regulations as duty holders, and the extent of those responsibilities. 2 Interpretation 3 Duties 29 Defence 30 Exemptions 31 Extension outside Great Britain 32 Disapplication 33 Revocations and modifications

MODULE B: DANGERS OF ELECTRICITY By the end of this Module, participants should appreciate the different types of danger, from which the Regulations aim to prevent injury. MODULE C: TRAINING, EXPERIENCE, COMPETENCE AND SUPERVISION By the end of this Module, participants should be aware of: the duties placed on both employer and employee to ensure that those engaged in work activities do not put themselves or others in danger because of lack of competence; the need for competency in other aspects of electrical work, such as the design and construction of systems. Regulation covered 16 Persons to be competent to prevent danger and injury MODULE D: SAFE SYSTEMS DESIGN AND INSTALLATION By the end of this Module, participants should: understand the need for correct design and installation of an electrical system; be aware of the factors which have to be taken into account when selecting the equipment and components which make up a system; understand the need for overcurrent protection and the factors which affect the selection of protective devices. NB. MODULE E: SAFE SYSTEMS WORKING SPACE, ACCESS AND LIGHTING By the end of the Module, participants should understand the need to take account of the requirements to provide adequate working space, access and lighting when siting electrical equipment. Regulation covered 15 Working space, access and lighting MODULE F: SAFE DESIGN PROTECTION AGAINST ELECTRIC SHOCK By the end of this Module participants should: appreciate the overall requirement for correct system design to protect against electric shock; understand the different methods of protection available, and where they should be used; be able to carry out a check on the protective measures required for a given system. 4(1) System construction 4(2) System maintenance 7 Insulation, protection and placing of conductors 8 Earthing or other suitable precautions 9 Integrity of referenced conductors 10 Connections
