INTERMODALITY INFRASTRUCTURE THE Montréal MODEL Operational efficiency at the Port of Montréal is assured by optimal management of the flow of goods through a system known across North America as the Montréal Model. Rail The Port of Montréal operates its network of direct access on-dock rail, with close to 1 km (6 mi.) of track. Container trains are assembled directly alongside the vessels. Equipped with our multiplegenerator eco-friendly locomotives, we deliver the rail cars to / from the rail interchange zone located on Port territory. This on-dock rail system is connected to major North American markets through both Canadian National (CN) and Canadian Pacific (CP) networks. TRUCKS Investing in innovation, our SmartPort initiatives (GHG reduction, truck fluidity program, e-navigation, rail management system, data sharing with stakeholders) are all geared to successfully embrace tomorrow s logistic challenges. Our common entry truck portal features optical and video recognition units to accurately identify containers and trucks, reducing wait times and improving fluidity. All transactions are validated through 27 checkpoints, equipped with an automated registration system where a computer recognizes the truck driver s fingerprint biometrics. Our real-time Web application provides live truck wait times, giving better information regarding trucking conditions at our container terminals. The Port of Montréal is a fluid intermodal platform where vessels, rail and ground transportation are fully integrated at a single location. CONTAINER TERMINALS Each of the Port of Montréal s four international container terminals can handle two post PANAMAX vessels simultaneously and all are equipped with on-dock rail networks. Bickerdike Terminal handles domestic container traffic, mainly between Montréal and St. John s, Newfoundland and Labrador. Also transiting through this terminal are breakbulk and RO-RO cargo. BULK PRODUCTS DRY BULK As a major dry bulk centre, the Port of Montréal is a gateway for raw materials. Iron ore and various other minerals, de-icing salt, gypsum, gravel, raw sugar and virtually all other bulk commodities are handled at the Port s 15 berths dedicated to dry bulk in Montréal and Contrecœur. Our rail access to the CN and CP networks gives us a leading edge in the shipment of commodities between the North American hinterland and international markets. GRAIN With over 4.5 MT handled at our terminal, our high vessel-loading capacity makes the Port of Montréal s grain elevator one of the fastest and most efficient on the St. Lawrence River. Our year-round operations and capacity to handle unit trains keep our facility connected to international markets throughout the year. The Port of Montréal owns a facility dedicated to the containerization, storage, cleaning, sifting and packaging of agricultural products.
