Armastone is not recommended to be fitted to plywood substrates as the maximum recommended weight limit for plywood would be approximately 30kg/m² (BS 5385-1: Code of Practice for the design and installation of internal ceramic and natural stone wall tiling and mosaics in normal conditions). ***Where such conditions exist please use Tile Backer Board as a suitable alternative. See table below.
M40 SPECIFICATION - GENERALLY 210 SUITABILITY OF BACKGROUNDS / BASES: Before starting work ensure that backgrounds / bases: Are sufficiently flat to permit specified flatness of finished surfaces; bearing in mind the permissible minimum and maximum thickness of the bedding material have been allowed to dry out by exposure to the air for not less than the following: Concrete floors/walls: 6 weeks Brick / block walls: 6 weeks Cement: sand screeds: 3 weeks Screed incorporating Mapei Topcem 24 hours (natural stone 3 days) Screed incorporating Mapei Mapecem 3 hours (natural stone 24 hours) Rendering: 2 weeks Mapei Planitop Fast 330 5 hours (min 24 hours before waterproofing) Gypsum plaster: 4 weeks 255 SUITABILITY OF EXISTING BASES AND CONDITIONS: Before commencing work the subcontractor must complete a test area and confirm through the Main Contractor that bases will, after the specified preparation, be suitable to receive the specified materials. Installation of materials will be taken as further acceptance of the suitability of the bases and also of the conditions within any given area. PREPARATION 310 EXISTING BACKGROUNDS / BASES GENERALLY: Remove efflorescence, laitance, dirt, other loose material, deposits of oil, grease and other materials incompatible with the bedding. Clean down all tiles, paint and other non porous surfaces by washing with water containing detergent then with clean water. Allow backgrounds / bases to dry before fixing tiles. Check suitability of any intended primer with Mapei Technical Dept. 340 EXISTING RENDER: Render should be inspected to ensure that they are well adhered to the background and free from efflorescence, loose surface material and material that would inhibit adhesion should removed 441 TANKING SYSTEMS. Pool tanks and constantly wet areas: MAPELASTIC system The surface to be treated must be perfectly clean and solid. Concrete/cementitious rendered surfaces must be cleaned of all dust, laitance, form release oil, mould, loose materials and rust. Dampen dry surfaces before installing the Mapelastic system. Apply Mapelastic in accordance with details contained in the Technical Data sheet. 471 WALLBOARDS-MARINE PLY-OTHER BOARDS: Should be dry and securely fixed and rigid screwed at 200mm centres max with no protruding fixing on surface. Prime only back & edge of board; not the face to be tiled FIXING 510 FIXING GENERALLY: Check that there are no unintended colour / shade variations within the tiles for use in each area / room. Thoroughly mix variegated tiles. Check that adhesive is compatible with background / base. Cut tiles neatly and accurately. Unless specified otherwise; fix tiles so that there is adhesion over the whole of the background / base and tile backs. Before bedding material sets make adjustments necessary to give true, regular appearance to tiles and joints when viewed under final lighting conditions. Clean surplus bedding material from joints and face of tiles without disturbing tiles.
511 MARBLE, SLATE AND LIMESTONE TILES Check with manufacturer for cleaning and sealing against staining. Small test area should be carried out to determine suitability. 520 ADVERSE WEATHER: Do not fix tiles if the temperature is below 5ºC or in damp conditions. Do not use frozen materials or apply finishes to frost covered surfaces. Comply with Mapei datasheets recommendations for minimum / maximum temperatures when using proprietary adhesives. Take adequate precautions to protect work from inclement weather, frost and premature drying out. 670 THICK BED ADHESIVE - SOLID (WALLS): Apply floated coat of adhesive to dry background comb the surface with the recommended solid bed trowel. Fill any keys and apply even coat of adhesive over the entire back of each tile. Press tiles onto bedding with twisting / sliding action to give finished bed thickness within the range recommended by the manufacturer. 780 CHECKING TILE ADHESION: As work proceeds and before the bedding has set, carefully remove random tiles as directed and in the presence of the CA to verify that there is specified adhesion. Remove the initial adhesive, butter the removed tile with fresh adhesive and refix. MOVEMENT JOINTS / GROUTING / COMPLETION 815a MOVEMENT JOINTS: Joints: Extend through tiles and bedding to base/background. Centre over joints in base/background. Width: To be advised Sealant: Mapei MAPESIL LM or Mapei MAPEFLEX PU 45 Colour: To be advised Preparation and application: BS5385: Part 1, 2009, 6.5 Part 2, 2016, 10 885 COLOURED GROUT Staining of tiles: Not permitted Evaluating risk of staining: Apply grout to a few tiles in a small trial area. If discoloration occurs apply a protective sealer to tiles and repeat trial. 910 PROTECTION: Adequately protect and keep clean all completed areas. Clean off any droppings immediately.
