Reverse Osmosis & Ion Exchange Resin Applications The LANXESS Team Hans-Jürgen Wedemeyer since 1984 in the company, he graduated 1992 as laboratory technician, designated since 2006 as Global Technical Manager responsible for make-up- water, condensate polishing and ultra-pure-water applications. He is representing more than 25 years of in-depth experience in ion exchange resins applications, engineering, product development and plant design. Dr. Jens Lipnizki with a master s degree in chemistry at Dortmund University (Germany) and University of London (Great Britain), he obtained 2003 his PhD in Chemistry on membrane fouling at the Technical University of Denmark. Professional experience started working more than three years as head of R&D at a membrane producer in Germany before he took care of pharmaceutical and chemical membrane application as sales manager. 2011 he became part of the application group in the membrane production facility of LANXESS. Since mid 2013, he got the position as head of the Technical Marketing Membrane. Gerhard Simon since he graduated 1997 as process engineer, he is working as a water professional. He joined LANXESS business unit LPT in 2013 as head of segment Water Solutions in the Global Marketing, today designated as Director Sales Development EMEA, amongst others responsible to develop the Sub-Sahara Africa business. Reverse Osmosis & Ion Exchange Resin Applications The LANXESS Product Range LANXESS high-performance products are used in numerous industries to treat and purify water and other liquid media. With Lewatit ion exchange resins, Bayoxide iron oxide adsorbers and Lewabrane RO membrane elements, LANXESS holds worldwide a leading position in the development and production of three premium separation technologies for water purification, desalination and process stream treatment. While membrane technology is very cost-efficient for water with a high salt content, only ion exchange resins can purify water with low salt concentrations to the point where only trace amounts remain as well as selectively separate targeted ions from a liquid stream. Bayoxide E adsorbers are particularly developed for purification of potable, process and waste water, based on different markets, industries and requirements. LANXESS is explicitly providing the described products only and not offering the construction of any treatment equipment. The Made-in-Germany Lewabrane RO membrane elements family consists of spiral-wound, thin-film composite membrane elements designed specifically for water treatment application, available for all water types, such as seawater, brackish water, and lowsalinity water, for use in industrial and potable water applications. The chemistry approach places the emphasis on higher cross-linking of the polyamide layer and, therefore, higher durability to cleaning chemicals, more stable rejection of mixed ion salt solutions and lower surface charge on the membrane to reduce the fouling tendency.
LANXESS can look back on almost 80 years of experience in ion exchange resins with its extensive Lewatit range. Ion exchange resins are used to remove dissolved particles from liquids. For this purpose, functional groups are bonded to the polymer beads. These functionalized polymers adsorb particular anions or cations from the liquid and discharge others. Water treatment is the best-known and biggest field of application for ion exchange resins. In household, such applications are used among others to soften water. Ion exchange resins are also used in industry, for example in power generation. There, Lewatit is used in the production of ultra-pure boiler feed water and steam to avoid incrustations and corrosion. This improves the efficiency, operating reliability and lifetime of power plants. In the cleaning of industrial effluent and treatment of groundwater, the removal of toxic substances plays a key role. LANXESS has a range of special Lewatit resins that, are able to selectively remove, for example, heavy metal ions and organic pollutants from (waste)water. Other fields of application for ion exchange resins include semiconductor production, galvanic industry (recovery and treatment of metals such as gold, copper, nickel or cobalt in hydrometallurgy), pharmaceuticals, the food and beverage industry. In the production of crystal sugar and liquid sugar syrup, Lewatit allows the brown cane sugar to be turned into the beloved white product and ensures that sugar also tastes like sugar. Lewatit ion exchange resins are also reliable catalysts which are crucial for many chemical reactions.
Bayoxide E adsorbers are particularly designed for simple passive pump-and-treat systems for purification of water sources. Bayoxide E adsorbers are based on nanoparticular α-ferric oxide hydroxide offering a very high surface area, advanced stability and superior adsorption capacity. Applications are arsenic removal from potable and wastewater, phosphate and silica removal from aquarium water and surface water (e.g. fish, garden and swimming ponds), antimony, selenium and selected heavy metal removal from aqueous streams and purification of mining water. LEWAPLUS design software is unique in the water treatment industry. It is a free, comprehensive software design tool for Ion Exchange Resin and Reverse Osmosis membrane systems. The RO permeate can be seamlessly transferred to the IER module for a quick and accurate design of the complete desalination system. Further, it allows for dimensioning of IER and RO systems under a variety of system configurations, including some unique process configurations only available with Lewatit and Lewabrane product technology.
