Core qualifications overview The Energy Institute s three-level energy management training framework supports you in developing your knowledge and skills at every stage in your career. You are welcome to start at any level depending on your existing knowledge level and experience. Energy Institute Level 1 Certificate in Energy Management Essentials A 5-day practical introduction to energy management, recommended for those new to an energy management role or those taking on energy management responsibilities in an existing role for the first time. Available in a classroom or online format. Energy Institute Level 2 Energy Management Professional A 150-hour online course providing all the knowledge and skills required of a professional energy manager. Recommended for those with 2+ years experience in a related role. Energy Institute Level 3 Advanced Energy Manager A 12-day classroom course for experienced energy managers providing an advanced understanding of key energy technologies as well as commercial and managerial topics. Recommended for those with 3+ years experience in an energy management role. Chartered Energy Manager The gold-standard professional grade in energy management, available only through the EI. Those who have achieved the EI Level 3 qualification should be well-placed to apply for Chartered status. He held a number of technical and marketing roles within British Gas and Midlands Electricity over 18 years before establishing Alpha Energy Consultancy in 1998. He has worked with the EI as a tutor for various training courses over a number of years. Chris specialises in implementing energy management and technical solutions to reduce cost and carbon emissions. He has carried out energy surveys, audits and strategic reviews for a wide range of public and private sector organisations and is experienced in identifying and implementing energy efficiency measures based on both capital investment and staff engagement solutions. Mark Hobbins CEng MEI Chartered Energy Engineer Mark has been involved in the energy industry since 1996 and has been a tutor with the EI for a number of years on numerous courses. He provides professional input for a wide variety of energy and environmental engineering projects, primarily low energy building/industrial design and energy efficiency, for a wide variety of clients. This role includes providing commercial, technical/ engineering and project management support for a portfolio of commercial buildings. Mark has also been involved in many renewable projects as well as Energy Centre projects like CHP, steam plant and large scale heating. Mark is an active member of the EI, mentoring and interviewing for CEng and MEI as well as being the Honorary Secretary for the Southern Scotland branch. 2

Energy Institute Level 1 Certificate in Energy Management Essentials A 5-day introductory course providing a comprehensive, practical overview of the fundamentals of energy management. This course provides participants with all the essential knowledge and skills they need to save energy, reduce operational costs and carbon emissions, comply with legislation and meet their organisation s environmental goals. This course is available as a 5-day classroom course or a 60-hour online course. Energy Institute Level 2 Energy Management Professional A 15-module (200 hour) online course providing all the knowledge and skills required of a professional energy manager. The course will provide a comprehensive overview of the essential technical theory of energy use, as well as in-depth understanding of the managerial and commercial aspects of an energy management role. This course can be started at any time and completed at your own pace. Our expert tutors are available to answer any questions and provide guidance as you work through the course. Professionals with 2+ years relevant experience in energy management or a related area i.e. facilities management, energy engineering, sustainability etc., OR Those who have successfully completed the Level 1: Certificate in Energy Management Essentials course and are looking to deepen their knowledge in preparation for pursuing an upper-level qualification Prerequisites GCSE English and AS/A Level Maths and Science or equivalent by qualification or experience, + some experience using Microsoft Excel Assessment Exam (one exam covering the five core modules, plus a short exam for each additional module) Work-based project (accounts for 50 of the total 200 hours) To pass the course, learners must achieve a minimum of 65% on each module and on their project. Energy Institute Level 3 Advanced Energy Manager This 12-day course provides an in-depth overview of key technical and commercial topics in energy management for experienced energy managers. Participants will learn how to effectively develop energy saving projects, illustrate their return on investment to management, evaluate and monitor financial savings, and understand and use a rounded set of energy management technologies and principles. Short online course: Mounting an effective staff-awareness campaign This course provides a comprehensive overview of the benefits of staff awareness and the practicalities of conducting a campaign. It is designed for those who are developing a staff awareness campaign, either in-house or as a consultant. This course can be completed on its own or as part of the EI Level 1 Certificate in Energy Management Essentials online course, and will take 3-5 hours to complete. EnergyAware EnergyAware is an innovative 30-minute online tool focussed on raising energy awareness in the workplace, certificated by the Energy Institute. The tool is designed for any staff member in your organisation who uses energy. Users need have no prior knowledge or experience of energy usage or management. EnergyAware will provide your staff with an insight into energy consumption and the impact this has on cost in the workplace. It will help them create a customised, actionable checklist of behaviour changes and smart technology decisions that they can take away and implement.
