Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef Multi-stakeholder initiative formed in 2014 to advance sustainability efforts within the beef industry. 84 members and observers representing different aspects of the value chain Three pillars of work: 1. Benchmarking national sustainability (ongoing). 2. Developing individual operation-level indicators and establishing verification protocols (ongoing). 3. National Beef Sustainability Assessment Establish a sustainability baseline for the Canadian beef industry (baseline year = 2013) 1. Establish social, economic and environmental baseline for the industry 2. Determine strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats 3. Identify key performance (national) indicators 4. Indicators and Verification CRSB is developing the framework for stakeholders to be able to produce and source verified sustainable beef in Canada: Sustainability indicators reflect what will be measured in terms of sustainability on beef operations and in processing plants Verification framework will determine how the indicators will be measured and verified Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef 8
CRSB Indicators The CRSB has developed indicators for measuring sustainability on individual beef operations Applicable to cow-calf, backgrounding, feedlot, dairy beef operations The indicators are: outcome-based nationally applicable developed by a multi-stakeholder committee through consensus based on expert opinion based on GRSB Principles & Criteria Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef 9
