Background People are asking more questions about their food and how it was produced The beef industry needs to respond by answering those questions in a scientific, credible manner Need for increased transparency and to enhance the beef industry s social licence Need for collaboration and coordinated efforts along the beef value chain Agreement that the CRSB should house the definition and framework for sustainable beef in Canada Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef

Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef Multi-stakeholder initiative formed in 2014 to advance sustainability efforts within the beef industry. 84 members and observers representing different aspects of the value chain Three pillars of work: 1. Benchmarking national sustainability (ongoing). 2. Developing individual operation-level indicators and establishing verification protocols (ongoing). 3. Definition of Sustainable Beef Sustainable beef is a socially responsible, environmentally sound and economically viable product that prioritizes Planet, People, Animals and Progress Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef 6

National Beef Sustainability Assessment Establish a sustainability baseline for the Canadian beef industry (baseline year = 2013) 1. Establish social, economic and environmental baseline for the industry 2. Determine strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats 3. Identify key performance (national) indicators 4. Set Industry targets Monitor and evaluate progress ~ every 5 years Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef 7

Indicators and Verification CRSB is developing the framework for stakeholders to be able to produce and source verified sustainable beef in Canada: Sustainability indicators reflect what will be measured in terms of sustainability on beef operations and in processing plants Verification framework will determine how the indicators will be measured and verified Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef 8

CRSB Indicators The CRSB has developed indicators for measuring sustainability on individual beef operations Applicable to cow-calf, backgrounding, feedlot, dairy beef operations The indicators are: outcome-based nationally applicable developed by a multi-stakeholder committee through consensus based on expert opinion based on GRSB Principles & Criteria Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef 9

Indicator Public Consultation Indicators have been released for a 60-day public consultation, following ISEAL recommendations 1 The CRSB is seeking constructive comments and feedback as to whether the indicators are comprehensive and cover sustainability questions Public consultation period runs from February 9 th to April 10 th 1 http://www.isealalliance.org/our-work/defining-credibility/codes-of-good-practice/standard-setting-code
