Ministry of Shipping Government of India Conclave on Green Ports & Oil Spill Management-2017 Shipping Corporation of India Auditorium, Shipping House, 245, Madam Kama Road, Mumbai May 30, 2017, Conference on Opportunities in & Promotion of Green Energy & Oil Spill Management in Indian Ports India with a coastline of 7,517 km with 12 major and 187 non-major ports, uses significant amount of energy in their operations. In order to reduce their carbon footprint, Ministry of Shipping has launched Green Port Initiatives at the Major Ports which offers immense investment & business opportunities due to the following initiatives: Enhanced usage of Renewable energy by development of Green Energy projects at the Ports making use of incentives provided by MNRE (for Rooftop Solar projects) as well as by Ministry. Already 16 MW solar and 6 MW wind power projects commissioned at major Ports to achieve the target of developing 175 MW of non-conventional energy from Solar and Wind power by year 2022 (includes 69 MW of Rooftop Solar projects). Switching to greener fuels such as Biodiesel, BioCNG, LNG/ CNG etc plan to achieve 20% blend of biodiesel fuel with diesel at the Major ports. Promoting energy efficiency and energy conservation in existing technology which indirectly endorses green energy Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan initiatives. In addition to above, Government has approved a new central sector scheme for providing assistance to Major Ports and oil handling Non-Major Ports under State Maritime Boards/ State Govts for mitigating measures as well as combating oil pollution. The Scheme would be administered by Ministry of Shipping. Financial assistance under the Scheme would be given in the form of grant-in-aid to help these ports procure pollution response (PR) equipments/materials necessary for combating Tier-I oil spills in their port waters.
