Once customers understand the security protocol that regulates the gathering, transmission, and storage of data from their project sites, they support the effort. Soon, sensor data and analysis provide production and engineering managers with a number of findings, including: Some crane operators habitually extend the cranes too far or lift loads that are too heavy, risking loss of balance and toppling. Fuel consumption of the same models of cranes is uneven across construction sites. Compared to industry benchmarks, erecting and dismantling the company s cranes takes 15 percent longer. Segments of many crane towers tower show warping and other fatigue, long before they are expected to wear out. Innovative action based on evidence Combining insights from the IoT, the sales database, and customer histories, the crane manufacturer then takes the following actions: Immediately approach customers and offer additional operator and safety training to avoid high-visibility, high-cost accidents. Analyze the differences in engine design, workloads, and working schedules to prepare design changes that improve fuel efficiency. Develop engine modifications once engineers better understand the impact of extremely cold temperatures. Collaborate with providers of materials and parts to improve the design of tower segments and avoid needless damage. Work with team leaders and project managers at client sites to update the outdated worker training and improve the poor onsite traffic management that slow the erecting and dismantling of cranes. Update crane designs to reach greater heights and a wider reach, which makes them more competitive in the construction markets of the Middle East and Asia. Implementing a service-based business model With a better understanding of the performance and durability of parts and components, the company offers a predictive maintenance service to customers, replacing and repairing parts before they might fail. Technicians perform remote diagnostics on connected equipment, so they do not need to travel to construction sites to inspect cranes and other equipment, and can use their time more effectively. Once customers are used to a new level of proactive service and collaboration, they are also open to a more drastic change in the engagement with the crane manufacturer: Instead of machine products, they sign a service contract that commits the manufacturer to delivering the benefit of the cranes and equipment. The service includes delivery, erection, maintenance, repair, operator training, dismantling, and transport, within service levels customers readily accept. Customers control their costs with a predictable, monthly fee instead of major capital expenses. The manufacturer creates recurring revenue, avoiding the high and low points of large-equipment sales cycles, and over time creates more revenue with this model, sometimes referred to as servitization.

Get started In surveys, between a quarter and a third of business executives state that digital transformation is a matter of survival for their businesses. Many companies will embark on digital transformation initiatives, sometimes without the right strategic planning and commitment.
