Portable Emissions Measurement System PEMS for nanoparticle counting and classification Raw gas particle concentration: 1E4 to 3E8 pt/ccm Particle size: 10 to 700 nm Power supply: 12-24 VDC / 100-240 VAC Gas conditioning: ThermoDilution PMP compliant testo NanoMet3 is a Portable Emissions Measurement System PEMS to measure number concentration and average diameter of solid nanoparticles in the size range 10 700 nm under real driving conditions. It is compact, easily portable, rugged design and provides on-line response over a wide concentration range. These properties make it a suitable instrument for particle number concentration measurements in non-laboratory settings and even OBD instrumentation. In addition to standard 100 240V AC power supply, testo NanoMet3 can be 12 24V DC battery operated for onboard and field measurements. The response time is short enough to measure transient engine operation, providing a complete data string with particle number concentration, average size, lung deposited surface area LDSA and calculated particle mass with 1Hz resolution. The wide measurement range (diluted 1E4 3E8 pt/cm3) covers practically all exhaust emission standards regarding particle number including the latest requirements of EURO6. Testo believes that NanoMet3 is therefore the ideal candidate for in-use-compliance testing, as well as for future PEMS type approval.
PEMS matters The increasing importance of accurate and cost effective testing has become a significant issue for the industry. A vast experience in nanoparticle measuring equipment for automotive, laboratory and ambient applications enabled us to develop a rugged, portable and costeffective solid nanoparticle counter. The PEMS methodology and approach has been recognized by many governmental entities such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency USEPA and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change UNFCCC. Particle counting on diesel light-duty vehicles is mandatory in Europe for type approval through Euro 5b since September 2011 and has been also introduced for GDI technology through Euro 6 by September 2014. The European Union and other countries worldwide will continue to integrate particle counting into their emission standards, especially since the World Health Organization reclassified diesel engine exhaust as carcinogenic to humans. Moreover, the European Commission is working on the approach for the technical assessment of PEMS for particle number emitted by light-duty vehicles. The oncoming test procedure for EURO 6c standards may include on-road measurements as an extension of the PMP. Portable Emission Measurement Systems (PEMS) have been proven for certain applications to better identify in-use performance of vehicles than standard laboratory measurements. They are designed to measure emissions during the actual use of an internal combustion engine vehicle or equipment in its regular daily operation under real-world conditions. Furthermore PEMS constitute a cost effective solution to perform in-service testing of heavy-duty engines: rather than extracting the engines from the vehicles and then installing them on an engine dynamometer to run their official regulatory cycles, the vehicles are equipped with on-board emission measurement systems and tested during their real in-use operation. Measurement principle When the sampling point of the PEMS during Real Driving Emissions is at the outlet of the tailpipe, the volatile substances may condense into nanodroplets, which can be detected as particles together with nonvolatile solid particles. To measure only the solid particle fraction, it is necessary to condition the sample thermally to remove the volatile fraction. NanoMet3 features a separate sample at the source and conditioning of the exhaust probe according to Testo patented Thermo-Dilution principle, which is fully PMP compliant. The portable system is completed with Testo proprietary Diffusion Size Classifier technology, a new sensor for measuring the number concentration and average diameter of nanometer sized particles. Since its measuring principle uses electrical charging to count particles, it not only enhances the quality of the global measurement, but also the cost of acquisition and costs per test are significantly lower. Hydrocarbon emission measurement will no longer be affected by butanol contamination in the testing room, nor will it be influenced by contaminated air.
