Level 3 IT Project Management (7540-381) Assignment B Introduction Information for Candidates About this document This assignment comprises all of the assessment for Level 3 IT Project Management (7540-381) Health and safety You are asked to consider the importance of safe working practices at all times. You are responsible for maintaining the safety of others as well as your own. Anyone behaving in an unsafe fashion will be stopped and a suitable warning given. You will not be allowed to continue with an assignment if you compromise any of the Health and Safety requirements. This may seem rather strict but, apart from the potentially unpleasant consequences, you must acquire the habits required for the workplace. Level 3 IT Project Management (7540-381) Candidate Instructions Time allowance: 3 hours Assignment set up: This assignment is made up of seven tasks Task A Project initiation Task B Risk management Task C Quality management Task D Communication management Task E Team building Task F Project lifecycle and estimation Task G Planning, monitoring and control Scenario Films R Us Limited is a small UK based on-line movie rental company. In order to meet the company s growth requirements a new website is required. You work as a Project Manager for Films R Us Limited and you have been asked to put in place the Project Management for the new website. Read all of the instructions carefully and complete the tasks in the order given. Task A Project initiation 1 Identify three types of project organisation structure that are suitable for the delivery of the project. 2 Using the project brief template provided, create a short project brief. 3 Using the business case template provided, create a business case, giving two items relating to cost and three project benefits. Task B Risk management 1 Using the risk log template provided, identify and prioritise three risks for the project and state if they are threats or opportunities. Task C Quality management 1 Using the quality plan template provided, compose a quality plan incorporating the following attributes giving examples of each: a) Quality Requirements two examples b) Quality Assurance processes two examples c) Testing Strategy four examples d) Defect Repair Control four examples e) Configuration management two examples f) Change Management four examples. 2 Using the change request template provided, complete a change request for a modification to the website to incorporate the facility to process on-line payments. 3 Using the configuration item template provided, complete a suitable configuration item record for the project s design specification. Task D Communication management 1 Using the communication management exercise template provided, identify the most appropriate communication method for each of the following: a) There is a requirement to pass information to your project team. b) The project s steering group requires an update on the project s progress. c) You require information from one of your team members. d) You require a review of the project s requirements specification. e) Your customer requires a periodic project update. Task E Team building 1 Identify and sequence the five Tuckman team development stages. 2 Identify the stage when the team is at its least effective, and what behaviour makes for an effective team. 3 Identify the project manager s leadership style during each Tuckman stage. Task F Project lifecycle and estimation 1 Outline, with brief descriptions, a proposed project development lifecycle and justify your choice. A lifecycle template is provided. Task G Planning, monitoring and control 1 From the following data, produce a product breakdown structure. The project requires the delivery of the following products: a project brief a quality plan an approved requirements specification document a website containing the functionality to order films. 2 From the following data, produce a work breakdown structure which contains three levels of activity. The project is required to: purchase and install the required hardware design the new website build and test the website implement the website. 3 From the following data, produce an activity on node network which shows each task and corresponding duration together with any dependencies. The project has the following tasks: a) The purchase of the new hardware will take 2 days. b) The installation of the new hardware will take 3 days but cannot be done before the hardware arrives. c) The design of the website will take 8 days but the required approval will take 2 days. d) The new software must be written and will take 10 days but only after the design has been approved. e) The new software must be tested and will take 5 days. f) The implementation of the new system will take 3 days. 4 Construct a Gantt chart from the activity on node network. 5 Using your Gantt chart identify which tasks are on the critical path. 6 Using your Gantt chart show a method of reflecting actual progress made to date. 7 Using the report template provided, use the following data to produce a highlight report to be presented to the project sponsor. The following should be included in your report: The project is currently in the execution phase. The project is currently behind schedule by 10 days and the budget has overspent by 2000. There is a risk to the project that the website will not be delivered on time. There are no high level project issues. When you have finished working: Sign each document above your name and label all removable storage media with your name. Hand all paperwork and removable storage media to your assessor. If the assignment is taken over more than one period, all paperwork and removable media must be returned to the test supervisor at the end of each sitting.
