NARRATIVE REPORT 1.0 BUILDING INFORMATION Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse was originally constructed in 1931; the building has had several renovations, notably, a 1976-1980 multi-phase renovation throughout the building. Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse is a four-story, 65,163 ft 2 building which primarily serves as office areas and work areas for athletics personnel. The interior floor finishes included concrete, floor tile, wood, and carpet; the interior wall finishes included gypsum wallboard, plaster, brick, concrete block, and ceramic block; and the interior ceiling finishes included ceiling tile, plaster, and metal. The roofing system is a peaked rubber-membrane roof over the majority of the building and a peaked asphalt-sheet roof over the south end of the building and the exterior of the structure is brick. The piping systems were insulated; fiberglass insulation (without hard fittings) and mag block insulation (with hard fittings) are located in the building. Steam enters the building in room 30 and domestic water enters the building in room 12. HVAC systems located in the building consisted of steam radiators and forced air furnaces equipped with heating/cooling coils. 2.0 ASBESTOS SURVEY INFORMATION Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse was surveyed as part of a larger project on NDSU s Fargo, ND Campus. This report is part of Volume 2 of a nine volume series. This report includes building specific information only; please refer to the opening section of Volume 2 for methodologies, definitions, and other pertinent supporting information. A total of 144 samples were collected from suspect asbestos-containing materials () from Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse on June 15, 2007, an additional 4 samples were collected on May 9, 2008, and an additional 1 sample was collected on May 15, 2008. Laboratory analysis results indicate 35 of these samples tested positive for asbestos. 2.1 Suspect Materials Identified and Sampled Hard Plaster- Skimcoat Gypsum Wallboard (7 types) Wall Texture Sink Undercoating (6 types) Floor Tile (11 types) Encapsulant on Fiberglass Insulation (2 types) Linoleum Building Seam Caulk Glue Pucks (2 types) Carpet (with residual black mastic) Baseboard Adhesive (3 types) HVAC Canvas Connector Roof Tarpaper (2 types) Exterior Window Filler Material Exterior Window Caulk (3 types) Exterior Air Vent Caulk Hard Plaster- Basecoat Joint Compound (7 types) Ceiling Tile (5 types) Floor Tile (11 types) Hard Fittings on Mag Block Insulation Mag Block Pipe Insulation Linoleum Adhesive Floor Filler Material Window Caulk (2 types) Carpet (3 types) Spray-on Fireproofing (on beams) Roof Flashing (2 types) Asphalt Sheeting (2 types) Exterior Building Seam Caulk (4 types) Exterior Door Caulk (2 types) Exterior Penetration Putty LEGEND No. 0700048 BENTSON BUNKER FIELDHOUSE (A020) Page 1 of 3

2.4 Survey Notes Using non-destructive sampling techniques, LEGEND pulls the carpet back in at least one corner (approx 6 ) in every carpeted room. LEGEND noted residual black mastic mixed with new carpet mastic in room 8; this mix tested positive for asbestos. LEGEND recommends assuming residual black mastic is under the entire room until a destructive survey can be conducted to verify if the residual black mastic is only in the corners/edges. LEGEND collected samples of joint compound on gypsum wallboard throughout the building using available architectural drawings to define homogenous areas. LEGEND identified at least 7 separate vintages (homogeneous areas) of joint compound; each vintage of joint compound was sampled as an independent homogeneous area. A review of the results indicates the joint compound installed during the 1976 Phase-I renovations to the building tested positive for asbestos, only. The 1976 vintage is located throughout the north ends of the basement and first floor; refer to the Locations Diagrams for exact locations. LEGEND collected samples of the 12 ceiling tile with fissures and pinholes and the associated glue pucks from the second floor of the building. The 12 ceiling tile with fissures and pinholes tested positive for asbestos while the associated glue pucks tested <1% for asbestos. Although the glue pucks do not meet the definition of an asbestos containing material, laboratory analysis has indicated asbestos fibers are present. LEGEND recommends that any abatement projects for the ceiling also include the abatement of the glue pucks. LEGEND No. 0700048 BENTSON BUNKER FIELDHOUSE (A020) Page 3 of 3
