Variety, Experience, Repeatability Erbium-doped fiber (EDF) continues to be a critical component for the amplification of optical transmission signals. In telecom there is a broad range of amplifier applications including EDFA, CATV and DWDM amplifiers, which can be designed for low to very high pump powers. OFS offers the broadest portfolio of EDF in the telecom industry to meet your specific requirements for C- and L-Band amplifiers as well as amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) sources. Since the very onset of EDFA technology, OFS has been investing in and employing state-ofthe-art equipment to develop and manufacture its RightWave EDF products. The RightWave EDF product line meets the most stringent standards for performance, quality and reliability. OFS also offers its customers flexibility in customizing EDF to their requirements. A record of high volume delivery and lot-to-lot consistency over the years is proof of OFS dedication to helping customers realize their goals. All EDF products go through a rigorous qualification program to ensure the optical and physical characteristics meet the specifications criteria. OFS offers stateof-the-art production facilities, ISO-controlled management systems to ensure repeatability, new fiber technology and advanced R&D support. Enabling Optimal Amplifier Design Applications and performance requirements vary throughout the industry requiring EDF to be optimized for different amplifier applications. That s why OFS offers the industry s broadest portfolio of EDF so amplifier design engineers can select the best fiber type that will lead to an optimal design for their application. OFS manufactures a variety of fibers that offer advantages such as gain flatness, high efficiency in a range of pump powers, and low noise figure. Other fundamental characteristics of RightWave EDF include spectral uniformity, high power conversion efficiency, gain shape, low splice loss and low noise. Fibers are available for power-amplifier, in-line amplifier, or pre-amplifier configurations in the C- or L-Band. Applications: Amplifiers DWDM Optical Amplifiers CATV Amplifiers High-Power Optical Amplifiers Single-stage or Multi-stage Amplifiers Networks Metro and Long Haul Networks Storage Networks and Disaster Recovery Packet Optical Networks Marine Networks OFS has a corporate heritage in EDF going back to 1989. OFS also offers custom splicing services for optimum results. Production Capacity With two production sites, OFS offers a dual source solution that serves customers with agility and quality. Specialty Services OFS has offered specialty fiber services for over ten years and has successfully satisfied customers globally with custom specifications for their amplifier designs, colored coatings and a variety of spool sizes. Gain Flatness Broader and flatter gain spectra are achievable with high aluminum levels, making fibers more suitable for DWDM and CATV applications. Uniformity Fiber helps ensure low variability within fiber lots and repeatable performance from lot-to-lot, simplifying EDFA design and manufacturing. Hydrogen Immunity Patented processes to prevent hydrogen (H2) induced loss. Low Polarization Mode Dispersion Low PMD allows the fibers to perform in high data rate applications. World class EDF products and services, combined with a laser like focus on customer needs from specifications to delivery, truly differentiate OFS as a trusted fiber solutions partner. OASiX Modeling Software The OFS OASiX Optical Amplifier Simulation System is a sophisticated simulation software package that helps determine which OFS EDF is best for you. OASiX is provided free of charge to OFS EDF customers to model the performance of OFS EDF in accurate design simulations maximizing performance of system design. This software package, featuring an enhanced user interface, allows the simulation of a wide variety of EDFA types to predict which fiber is best for your application. ASE sources and laser designs are also incorporated in this proprietary software package. This specialized software package allows a system engineer to enter custom setup conditions, which can accurately predict EDF performance at all pump powers. OASiX also includes modeling parameters specific to the lot of EDF purchased, and it is available in a Dynamic Link Library (DLL) version to combine with other external optimization tools. OFS continues to issue new releases of OASiX to keep pace with the evolving needs of EDFA designers. Many customers see value in using OASiX for simulation as it can save them valuable measurement time, reduce fiber waste and also help optimize amplifier design. 3

OFS World Class Production Facilities As an industry leading specialty optical fiber manufacturer, OFS has the added competitive advantage of two state-of-the-art locations producing EDF: Somerset, NJ, USA, and Broendby, Denmark. The facilities in Somerset offer a low to high volume mix in production capacity as well as abilities to develop OFS Specialty Fiber Services OFS Specialty Fiber Services offer a trusted business partner relationship with complete flexibility to customers requiring customization for their optimum amplifier design. We are determined to help customers realize their goals by offering enhanced product development. For over ten years, OFS has operated a solid combination specialty fiber services including consulting, fiber design, test and measurement, and splicing services. New fiber designs for increased bandwidths are being refined to offer even more options for extended flat gain bands. Our preform manufacturing can be tailored to meet specific targets within our set ranges for more customized designs. Once customized, we create custom specifications and part numbers for production to meet your volume needs. OFS EDF products have consistently met and exceeded performance, reliability, and quality expectations as we strive to lead design innovation in high-performance fibers for present and future application needs. specialty fiber design for OFS customers. The Broendby facility, on the other hand, is capable of producing very high volume. Each site has highly experienced staff collaborating together on continued development, manufacturing, best practices and support of EDF. Both locations have successfully used advanced design and processing techniques to consistently meet customer needs around the world. Having two manufacturing sites (each location maintains independent supply chains, labor and plant resources), provides OFS customers security of delivery, more fiber choices and a readily available second source. These are key factors when relying on critical, highperformance fiber products. OFS Laboratories, another major advantage of working with OFS, continues its rich research tradition of innovating new EDF design to meet future customer requirements. OFS has a wealth of proven experience delivering on the 3H s: high-quality, high-performance and high-reliability EDF products to large and small customers worldwide.
