Detailed Requirements Document (DRD) Level 3 OLE Context Core and Specialisms Overview Employers in the Rail Engineering Sector have developed this Detailed Requirements Document (DRD); the document is designed to meet the detail required for the OLE pathway within the Railway Engineering Technician Standard. The OLE DRD describes the context core and specialisms required for a OLE Railway Engineering Technician to be competent; this document forms part of the Employer Occupational Brief (EOB). Purpose Employers, colleges and training providers should use this document to support the delivery of the Railway Engineering OLE pathway in the planning and delivery of the apprenticeship standard. The detail within this document has been developed from the National Occupational Standards (NOS). Page 1 of 26

1. Context core and specialisms for OLE Rail Engineering Technician Core Knowledge. Within a Rail context all Rail Engineering Technicians need to know about: The scientific, technical, engineering, mathematical and design principles that are required to support the maintenance, renewal and construction of The Railway. Core Skills. Within a Rail context all Rail Engineering Technicians need to be able to: Keep themselves and others safe by adhering to safe working practices. Understand and comply with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements, including safe access to work locations. Plan a high standard of technical work: Gathering and interpreting information including drawings, plans and schedules needed for the development of rail engineering activity planning; detailed inspection and performance & condition analysis of assets; Plan work to be undertaken including the appropriate resources. Deliver a high standard of technical work: Undertake engineering activities in relation to maintenance, construction / installation and or renewal of assets. Complete integrity & compliance checks on own work, instigate testing and identify where independent testing is required. Transfer responsibility of assets once work has been completed. Supervise their own work and that of others. Communicate effectively. Use oral, written, electronic and IT based methods and systems for the accurate communication, reporting & recording of technical and other information, using correct terms, standards, templates and certifications. The scientific, technical, engineering, mathematical and design principles that are required to support the maintenance, renewal and construction of The Railway The Rail Engineering Technician knowledge qualification for the OLE pathway is made up of the following three units. Overhead Line Infrastructure Construction and Maintenance is mandatory plus one from Overhead Line Technologies (Construction) or Overhead Line Technologies (Maintenance). For further guidance please see the knowledge qualification structure at annex A. Overhead line Infrastructure Construction and Maintenance Know the preparatory activities required for the construction of overhead line infrastructure Describe the legal and financial framework applicable to a project for a new section of railway infrastructure Describe the development process required for a new build or renewal within a railway environment Know the scope of earthwork activities that may be undertaken in association with overhead line infrastructure Describe the methodology used for an overhead line earthworks project, including the plant and equipment required Describe the importance of foundations for the construction of overhead line structures Understand the forms of construction and material specifications used in overhead line infrastructure Explain the essential design principles for overhead line geometry Describe the construction methods for initial placement and subsequent maintenance activities to ensure overhead line position and geometry Describe the materials and quality control processes required to ensure the provision of suitable and sustainable overhead line construction material and waste material disposal Understand overhead line maintenance processes used to identify and correct defects Describe the maintenance issues that need to be considered to determine rail infrastructure integrity Explain how rail infrastructure defects are identified and the prescribed remedial action for each Page 4 of 26
