BAHAGIAN A (50 MARKAH) SECTION A (50 MARKS) Jawab mana-mana LIMA (5) soalan daripada Bahagian ini. Answer any FIVE (5) questions from this Section. 1. Kepekatan kadmium dalam 15 sm tanah atas suatu padang (sering disebut lapisan bajak) boleh dianggarkan dengan mengambil satu sampel wakilan, larutkan tanah, dan menganalisis sampel tersebut dengan menggunakan spektroskopi penyerapan atom elektroterma. Kepekatan kadmium yang didapati adalah 0.78 ppm. Katakan pepejal lanyau kumbahan yang mengandungi 22 ppm kadmium ditambah pada kadar (jisim kepada luas) 3 t ha -1. Dengan beranggapan bahawa lanyau tersebut bercampur secara sekata dalam lapisan bajak, hitung purata kepekatan kadmium yang baru di dalam bahagian tanah tersebut. The concentration of cadmium in the top 15 cm of soil in a field (often called the plough layer) can be estimated by taking a representative sample, dissolving he soil, and analysing it by electrothermal atomic absorption spectroscopy. The concentration is found to be 0.78 ppm. Suppose that solid sewage sludge containing 22 ppm cadmium is added at the rate (mass per area) of 3 t ha -1. Assuming sludge is well mixed within the plough layer, calculate the new average concentration of cadmium within this part of the soil. Describe the effects of (a) Oxygen Demanding Wastes, and (b) Nutrients on aquatic environment. 2/5

Huraikan tiga pendekatan yang biasa digunakan bagi meminimakan sebarang perubahan fizikal, kimia, dan/atau biologi yang mungkin berlaku dalam sesuatu sampel daripada masa sampel dikumpul sehingga masa sample dianalisis. Describe the three approaches that are generally used to minimize any physical, chemical, and/or biological changes that may take place in a sample from the time of sample collection to the time of sample analysis. 6. Pengabuan kering mungkin merupakan kaedah yang paling mudah dalam kesemua sistem penguraian. Terangkan mengapa penggunaannya terhad. Dry ashing is probably the simplest of all decomposition systems. Explain why its use is limited. 7. Terangkan secara ringkas: (a) Mengapa HCl yang digunakan dalam pencernaan asid dianggap lebih lemah daripada HNO 3? (b) Mengapa HNO 3, bukan asid-asid lain yang kerap digunakan untuk pencernaan asid? (c) Mengapa pencernaan HF digunakan bagi sampel-sampel yang mengandungi silikat? Explain briefly: (a) Why HCl used in acid digestion is considered as weaker than HNO 3? (b) Why HNO 3, rather than other acids is most commonly used for acid digestion? Huraikan secara ringkas DUA prinsip pembangunan mampan. Berikan satu contoh amalan yang difikirkan dapat menyumbang secara positif kepada pertanian mampan. Define the term sustainable development. Briefly describe TWO principles of sustainable development. Give an example of practices that you think would contribute positively to sustainable agriculture. (b) Terangkan secara ringkas bagaimana anda boleh hubungkaitkan Akta Kualiti Alam Sekeliling 1974 Malaysia dengan pembangunan mampan. Explain briefly how you can relate Malaysia Environmental Quality Act 1974 with sustainable development. (5 markah/marks) (c) Terangkan persamaan dan perbezaan antara penggunaan scrubber untuk menyingkirkan bahan pencemar dari ekzos gas industri dan penggunaan air stripper untuk menyingkirkan bahan pencemar dari air. Describe the similarities and differences between the use of a scrubber to remove pollutants from industrial exhaust gases and the use of an air stripper to remove pollutants from water. 9. (a) Apakah yang dimaksudkan dengan penilaian impak alam sekeliling (EIA)?. Nyatakan tiga aktiviti terjadual yang memerlukan EIA. Huraikan secara ringkas DUA kelebihan EIA yang menyumbang kepada pembangunan mampan. What does it meant by environmental impact assessment (EIA)? State three prescribed activities subject to EIA requirements. Briefly describe TWO benefits of EIA which contribute to sustainable development. (15 markah/marks) 4/5

(b) Terangkan secara ringkas bagaimana kesan antropogenik mempercepatkan kitar karbon bumi dan mengakibatkan pembebasan gas rumah hijau di atmosfera, menyumbang kepada pemanasan bumi secara global. Explain briefly on how antropogenic effects intensify the global carbon cycle and cause emission of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, contributing to global warming. 10. (a) Takrifkan istilah tapak pelupusan sisa buangan berbahaya. Define the term hazardous waste site. (3 markah/marks) (b) Senaraikan jenis kontaminasi yang perlu diambil kira apabila menilai potensi risiko yang memudharatkan alam sekitar melibatkan tapak pelupusan sisa buangan berbahaya. List the types of contamination that should be considered when evaluating the potential risk that threatened the environment presented by abandoned hazardous waste sites.
