Academic Staff Salaries Average Salaries 2014 Introduction This summary shows the results from the collective responses to the Staff Salary Survey 2014, covering all but one of the Commonwealth regions. Below, we have summarised the average salaries of the whole sample across all Academic Ranks as well as for Individual Academic Ranks. The Staff Salary Survey examines both salary scales and actual mean and median average salaries for all job ranks. The glossary below indicates which averages are used in the following summary. Mean and median salaries The mean and median average salaries reflect the salary distribution of staff at participating institutions, taking into account salary levels and the number of staff at each academic level. The data is drawn from the mean and median salaries provided by participating institutions and represent actual salaries received by staff. Scale Midpoints Scale Midpoint salary levels are the arithmetic mean of the top and bottom of individual salary scales. This will give an indication of the level of salary scales at the various ranks across multiple comparison groups. The data is drawn from the Top and Bottom of scale data provided by participating institutions. How are the values calculated? In an attempt to equalise the purchasing power of different currencies for comparing values across countries with different currencies, the tool uses the World Bank s Development Indicators to convert local currencies into Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) US Dollars. PPP is the rate of currency conversion at which a given amount of money will purchase the same goods and services in two countries and is calculated by comparing the price of standard goods, broadly identical across countries, and using this to establish the exchange value into a single comparable currency. The differences between PPP conversions and market exchange rates can be substantial. An example from our data from 2012-13 shows that the top of the scale for Associate Professor at a South African university is USD $164,995 using a PPP conversion factor, but drops significantly to USD $95,844 when using the market exchange rate at the time of analysis. 1
