Positions allocable to this entry level class work under the close supervision of higher level human relations consultant staff. They are responsible for assisting journey-level and senior consultants on a variety of assignments in the area of human relations work and for carrying out tasks of increasing difficulty in preparation for promotion to the higher level class of Human Relations Consultant. Incumbents are expected to demonstrate enhanced interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills as they gain experience in working with diverse groups and individuals on a variety of sensitive issues. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Conferring with community agencies and organizations to support program staff with resolution and mediation of intergroup conflicts. Conducting research to analyze and evaluate community conditions, problems and issues; and developing and evaluating educational, training programs and conferences on the subject of human relations. Assisting Senior Human Relations Consultants with meetings and programs to identify strategies to resolve potential or actual intergroup conflicts. Assisting with publications, reports which include tracking reports on incidents of hate crimes including racial, ethnic, religious, homophobic, and gender-related violence; analyzes such incidents to determine their causes and possible means for resolutions. Preparing written materials such as research reports, booklets, newsletters, press releases, and Commission reports and correspondence.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in a social science such as social work, psychology, sociology, or a closely related field of behavioral science. One year of experience in work involving (1) the improvement of inter-group relations, or (2) high risk youth, or (3) community welfare or social development programs, or (4) community relations programs will be accepted for each year of college to a maximum of two years. Physical Class: 2 - Light: Light physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit, and some bending, stooping or squatting. Considerable walking may be involved. Licenses: A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternativeâ method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions. Special Requirement Information: A copy of the applicants diploma or degree from an *accredited college or university that demonstrates completion of the required education will be required and must be submitted with the County Employement Application. Review of the original diploma or degree will be required prior to appointment. *Accreditation: Accredited institutions are those listed in the publications of regional, national, or international accrediting agencies, which are accepted by the Department of Human Resources. Publications such as American Universities and Colleges and International Handbook of Universities are acceptable references. Also acceptable, if appropriate, are degrees that have been evaluated and deemed to be equivalent to degrees from United States accredited insitutions by an academic credential evaluation agency recognized by The National Association of Credential Evaluation Service or Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS SPECIAL Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with staff, County departments and outside agencies. Strong oral and written communication skills. Strong analytical skills and ability to research and analyze data, issues and problems. Knowledge and experience in using computer software applications such as Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Outlook, and email. Knowledge and experience in performing website edits, analyzing geographic statistical mapping software data. Knowledge and experience in conducting internet research. Shift: Any Shift Appointees may be required to work any shift including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. A thorough background investigation (including fingerprinting search) will be required of candidates. Candidates who are found unsuitable for employment as a Human Relations Consultant Aid will be removed from the certification list pursuant to Civil Service Rule 6.04. VACANCY EXAMINATION CONTENT ELIGIBILITY The resulting Eligible List for this examination will be used to fill vacancies at the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations, located at 320 W. Temple Street, Suite 1184, Los Angeles CA 90012. This examination will consist of an interview weighted at 100%. The interview will assess education, experience, personal fitness, and the general knowledge and abilities to perform the duties of this position. Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher in order to be placed on the Eligible List. Candidates who successfully pass the examination will be placed on an Eligible List of qualified candidates for twelve (12) months following date of promulgation. EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY Employment Eligibility Information: Final appointment is contingent upon verification of U.S. citizenship or the right to work in the United States. RECORD OF CONVICTIONS A full disclosure of all convictions is required. Failure to disclose convictions will result in disqualification. Not all convictions constitute an automatic bar to employment. Factors such as your age at the time of the offense(s), and the recency of offense(s) will be taken into account, as well as the relationship between the offense(s) and the job(s) for which you apply.
