UNIVERSITY of CENTRAL OKLAHOMA Ä Established in 1890, the University of Central Oklahoma is now the state s largest metropolitan university. Central offers an innovative learning community to more than 17,000 students, where teaching comes first. A nationally recognized leader in sustainability and green practices, UCO is a Green Power Partner of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and has in four consecutive years been named the EPA s Individual Conference Champion of the College and University Green Power Challenge for using more green power than any other school in its conference. Indicative of the cultivation of creativity and innovation on campus, Central s car-share and Bum-A-Bike programs were the first of their kind for an institution of higher learning in Oklahoma. Think Sustainability

CITY of EDMOND Ä The City of Edmond maintains an extensive system of 19 community and neighborhood parks and seven recreational sports facilities. Edmond is also the home of Arcadia Lake, an enjoyable destination for those who love boating, hiking, swimming, mountain biking and fishing. Our commitment, as the sixth largest city in Oklahoma, is to focus on sustainable environments for our residents and visitors alike. Think Sustainability

SUCCESSFUL COLLABORATION Ä UCO and the City of Edmond have worked together, promoting better stewardship in the community through these endeavors: UCO Wellness Center State-of-the-art fitness center to promote healthy living Edmond Urban Forestry Department Hosts an annual tree planting event Broncholink Bus Promotes mobility, clean air and alternative fuels Edmond Bicycle Committee Promotes a more mobile and multimodal community ULEAD Challenge Course 1,400 sq. ft. ropes course dedicated to team building Center for Outdoor Adventure Recreation Engage in outdoor activities Think Sustainability

WIND POWER Ä Edmond has been designated as an EPA Green Power Community and is the only city to-date in Oklahoma to receive this accolade. Through the Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority and Edmond Electric the City of Edmond is ranked 23rd amongst all cities in the US, with 11% of their electric power being provided by wind. UCO is the first university in the state to purchase 100-percent wind energy, helping to reduce the environmental impacts associated with the campus electricity usage. EPA estimates show that UCO s purchase of green power from Edmond Electric is equivalent to off setting the carbon dioxide emissions of more than 3,000 average American homes, or nearly 4,000 passenger vehicles, annually. Think Sustainability

GEOTHERMAL Ä In addition to wind power, geothermal technology for heating and cooling has been integrated into a number of our community facilities and residential homes. As an example, our Mitch Park YMCA and Edmond Public Schools Competitive Pool benefits from such technology, creating a comfortable environment using 300 geothermal wells. Think Sustainability

TRANSPORTATION Ä Sustainable alternatives to the personal vehicle are offered through the City of Edmond s own Citylink bus system and Citylink Access Paratransit Service. Through the conversion process, our buses can now operate on propane, compressed natural gas or clean-burn Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel. Edmond Electric, our locally-owned power company, also recently converted a boom truck into a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. To further enhance Edmond s sustainable transportation our 2012 Master Bicycle Plan is focused on the multimodal aspect of our community. At UCO, the Bum-A-Bike program allows students, faculty and staff to bum bikes free of charge for up to two weeks at a time. In 2010, the university introduced the first car-share program to the state with Connect by Hertz, and in 2006, the university developed a biodiesel fuel program with the production capability to power many of the university s diesel engines. Think Sustainability

RECYCLING Ä Edmond is making major strides in recycling with the introduction of a new 96-gallon residential container, several community programs and a local recycling ad campaign. Based upon these sustainable endeavors 77% of our residents recycle. As part of its commitment to resource and environmental preservation, UCO also developed a comprehensive recycling program, expanding the service to include a wide variety of waste materials that are collected and diverted from area landfills. In addition to items like paper, plastic, cardboard and aluminum, the university recycles batteries and printer cartridges. Think Sustainability

URBAN FORESTRY Ä The growth of Edmond s urban forest is a direct reflection of the City s service to protect, preserve and enhance through outreach programs, resource management and sustainable stewardship. Programs like the annual Arbor Day tree planting both increase and sustain the beautiful tree canopy throughout community. Think Sustainability

WATER RESOURCES Ä The City s Water Resources operations have been at the forefront of sustainable practices for many years. These City facilities consume more than 63% of the electricity used in City operations, and are powered by 100% wind energy. In 2012, a total of 380 containers were distributed through the city s Rain Barrel Program to help promote water conservation measures. Edmond also participates in a regional water conservation plan along with several other metro area communities. Think Sustainability

MEMORANDUM of UNDERSTANDING Toward a Sustainable Future Ä Building on our successful collaboration, the City of Edmond and the University of Central Oklahoma have developed a Memorandum of Understanding Toward a Sustainable Future. This community compact reflects our deep commitment to a more healthy, livable and sustainable future for our residents and visitors alike. Don Betz, Ph. D UCO PRESIDENT Charles Lamb EDMOND MAYOR Larry Stevens EDMOND CITY MANAGER For a full version of this memorandum visit, edmondok.com/sustainability.
