Research Programs (CRPs) All CRP proposals have been approved by the Consortium Board and submitted to the Fund Council. Fund Council adopted four different categories of approval for CRPs: Category I: full approval. Category II: provisional approval; conditional on addressing the Fund Council must-haves. Following review and recommendation of the ISPC, the Fund Council will give virtual approval on a no objection basis. If an objection is expressed, the CRP will be reconsidered by the Fund Council at its next meeting. Category III: proposal to be resubmitted after addressing the substantial must-haves of the Fund Council. ISPC reviews the revised proposal. Final approval of the CRP in a face-to-face meeting with Fund Council. Category IV: rejection of a proposal. ICARDA and the CRPs ICARDA is leading the Dryland Systems Program (CRP1.1) ICARDA is also a partner in 8 other CRPs: CRP2: Policies, Institutions, and Markets Thematic Area 3: Sustainable productivity increase for global food security CRP for Wheat (with CIMMYT) CRP for Grain Legumes (ICRISAT & CIAT) CRP for Dryland Cereals (ICRISAT) CRP for Livestock and Fish (ILRI) CRP4: CRP5: CRP7: Agriculture for Improved Nutrition and Health (IFPRI) Water, Land and Ecosystems (IWMI) Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CIAT) 2

Integrated Agricultural Systems for the Poor and Vulnerable in Dry Areas Dryland Systems Program (CRP1.1) CRP1.1: Integrated Agricultural Systems for the Poor and Vulnerable in Dry Areas SCOPE = Global Dry Areas 3

Drylands Systems Program: Target Regions, Benchmark Areas & Action Sites Target Regions Partners defined five Target Regions where dryland agriculture faces serious challenges (from west to east): West African Sahel and Dry Savannas East and Southern Africa North Africa and West Asia Central Asia South thasia Benchmark Areas, Action Sites and Satellite Sites Selected by CRP partners in the Regional Design Working Meeting (Nairobi, Kenya, June 2011) based on detailed mapping of target areas Drylands System Program: Strategic Research Themes (SRT) SRT1: Approaches and models for strengthening innovation systems, building stakeholder innovation capacity, and linking knowledge to policy action SRT2: SRT3: SRT4: Reducing vulnerability and managing risk = most vulnerable systems Sustainable intensification for more productive, profitable and diversified dryland agriculture with well-established established linkages to markets = high potential systems Impact assessment and cross-regional synthesis to provide evidence to promote investment in dry areas 4

Drylands Systems Program: Program Aims Increasing resilience- Mitigating Vulnerability (SRT 2) Sustainable intensification (SRT 3) Drylands Systems Program: System Level Outcomes Reducing rural poverty; Improving food security; Improving nutrition and health; and Sustainable management of natural resources, 5

Drylands Systems Program: Benchmark Areas within Each Region SRT2-type benchmark SRT3-type benchmark Drylands Systems Program: Action & satellite sites Defined as sites that are representative of the two benchmark area types, and where the integrated systems research will actually be implemented with program partners. 6
