Solar Energy The Sun is an Infinite Energy Source In Europe there is sufficient sun energy to supply 1.5 times more than our total energy demands. Every single kwh of solar PV generated electricity saves between 835g and 879g of CO 2 when replacing a European thermal power plant. Building mounted solar arrays are a key contributor to reliable power generation and a provider of long-term income stream, through feed-in tariff (FiT) incentives, for property investors and owners. Global energy resource comparison Annual solar irradiation on Earth Annual global energy use Remaining worldwide fossil fuel energy supply: Oil (40 years) Gas (80 years) Coal (170 years) Uranium (60 years) As we all know, mankind already faces a real threat from climate change, due to the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the Earth s atmosphere from the consumption of fossil fuels. By their nature, solar power renewable technologies are carbon neutral and therefore make a significant contribution to reducing the effects of climate change. Therefore, there is an increasing need to utilise renewable electricity technologies, especially solar photovoltaic systems, but the reasons extend beyond the issue of climate change. Global electricity generation is based upon the world s finite supply of fossil fuels (coal, gas, oil and uranium), and these reserves are diminishing rapidly. Combine this with ever-increasing, economy-damaging fuel prices, it has become imperative to separate the supply of fossil fuels from the global economy. Widespread application of renewable electricity technologies is the solution, with solar PV offering the highest potential. Solar PV application is already very successful with Germany being a prime example. In 2007, Germany installed around 50% of the world s annual solar PV systems, using one of the simplest feed-in tariff initiatives in the world. Kingspan Solar Solutions Feed-in Tariff HOW IT WORKS How is Solar Electricity created? Sunlight is directly converted into electricity via solar cells. This is known as the photovolatic (PV) process. Solar PV installations include: Module mounting systems. Modules or laminates that generate direct current (DC) from solar energy. Inverters that convert direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC). Meters that record electricity fed into the system. Cabling and connections. Feed-in Tariff Schematic All generated electricity sold to grid Consumed electricity imported as normal Kingspan work with the client to deploy grid connected solar photovoltaic systems on roofs, providing complete solutions from design and installation through to fully maintained PV power generating systems. Connection to the utility grid and the assurance that the system is generating revenue from the feed-in tariff are included within the solar package. PV Arrays Once the system is operational, revenues accrues to the system owner who then receives the feed-in tariff and any compensation due from electricity sold through a power purchase agreement (PPA). Making it Easy Every stage of the process, from design and development, to the installation and maintenance is managed by Kingspan. Customers are provided with a single point of contact to ensure the smooth running of any project. Solar Integration Methods Kingspan have a comprhensive range of PV integration solutions including factory fitted laminates and BIPV modules. In addition, the range of direct and tilt mounted module solutions are value engineered to optimise capital and installation costs. A Technology Driven Approach Kingspan offer a wide range of world leading solar technologies including flexible laminates, polycrystalline, monocrystalline and thin film modules from a range of trusted solar manufacturers. Kingspan and their partners are constantly innovating new building integrated PV systems to deliver the maximum return on investment for clients, driving the move to grid parity. MV Transformer (Connection point owned by Utility company - typically medium voltage) Inverters (can be housed externally) Feed-in Tariff Rates Mounting systems are designed as modular unit assemblies to enable fast installation of solar modules for almost any application. Systems typically consist of aluminium or steel components and can be used for direct mounting of solar modules or provide tilt mounting frames for optimum positioning on flat roof applications. Tilt mounting systems can be either fixed directly to metal roofs or be ballasted (weighted) on membrane faced roofdeck panels. Inverters for all applications Inverters 8 Remote monitoring and displays The main task of a PV inverter is to convert the DC power generated in the solar modules into AC power so it can be used in the building or fed into the utility grid. The PV inverter is the core of a solar PV system and forms a highly complex link between the modules and the utility grid. Cabling & Connections We have wide range of accredited cabling and connection solutions for all systems and applications. Please consult Kingspan for further information.
