Petroleum & Natural Gas Engineering (PNGE) Penn State University

PNGE Quick Facts Slide 2 Penn State PNGE ranked top-tier program 4 th in the world for petroleum engineering programs by CEOWORLD magazine 6 th in graduate petroleum engineering in the US ranked by Department Heads Student-led petroleum engineering club is world-class Society of Petroleum Engineers Student Chapter Named 2016 and 2017 Outstanding Student Chapter Main Petroleum Engineering Building (Hosler) to be newly renovated Smaller class sizes to enhance student experience 122 current seniors, 50 seniors next year Some of the brightest students in the country Current GPA average for seniors 3.6

Why Petroleum Engineering? Slide 3 It s the best time to enter PNGE now There will always be a need to quench the world s thirst for energy Which means there will always be jobs When oil and natural gas prices are low Best & brightest enter the industry Innovation and development of cutting-edge technologies to drill cheaper & faster We are one of the top-paying professions Median annual wage for petroleum engineers: $130,050 Top 10% earn more than $187,200 Opportunities are endless With Marcellus Shale growth, ability to work locally in Pittsburgh, Tri-State Region if desired Ability to travel the world working for a supermajor such as Chevron or ExxonMobil

Shale Oil and Gas Reservoirs Slide 4

Oil & Gas Supply Chain Slide 5 Upstream Mainly petroleum engineers. Exploration & production segment of the industry. Relates to searching for and recovering crude oil and/or natural gas from underground fields. Midstream Petroleum, chemical, civil, mechanical (and other types) engineers. Relates to the processing, transportation, and storage of crude oil and natural gas. Downstream All types of engineers. Close connection to consumer-end use of oil and gas usually operates lowpressure gathering and distribution lines. Energy Finance Ability to analyze and predict future crude oil and natural gas prices. Ability to become energy analyst, trader or scheduler. Common to minor or double major in Energy Business and Finance (EBF) at PSU. Student club for energy marketing check out PSEMA.org Data Analytics Oil & gas industry is high-tech and uses latest technology in day-to-day operations Includes Big Data and machine learning / computer science Encouraged to take classes in statistics, computer science (even minoring, double major, or Master s)

Disciplines in Petroleum Engineering Slide 6 Drilling Engineering Plan and drill wells both onshore and offshore Reservoir Engineering Design and simulate well locations and processes to optimize hydrocarbon recovery Production Engineering Design surface equipment to maximize recovery Completions Engineering Design procedures and operations to stimulate the reservoir in the most efficient, cost-effective way possible Penn State is known for reservoir / production engineering You will get to experience all aspects at Penn State Penn State = well-rounded engineer Petrophysical Engineering Evaluation rock physics using well logs and core data

Hydraulic Fracturing Slide 7 Fracturing goal is to provide conduit of flow for hydrocarbons to enter the wellbore and travel to the surface Unconventional vs. conventional reservoirs Unconventional where hydrocarbons are trapped in tight, low perm rocks Conventional hydrocarbons are found in large areas of high perm/porous rocks Fracturing is not a new technology! It began in the 1940 s. The advent of horizontal drilling + hydraulic fracturing is what caused the US shale boom Slurry of water and sand pumped downhole to shatter shale rock, creating fractures Sand is used to keep fractures propped open after injection takes place

Environmental Myths about Natural Gas Development Slide 8 Hydraulic fractures in the Marcellus Shale reach aquifers and contaminate local water sources. This is not possible from a scientific volume-balance standpoint Hydraulic fracturing is polluting the United States There has never been a reported instance of contamination Bad cement jobs could cause contamination, but the industry is improving (this is why we need engineers!) Oil & gas is one of the most heavily regulated industries Methane is not environmentally-friendly Natural gas is cleaner-burning than coal and oil Fossil fuels have not improved the quality of life as air pollution is increasing CO2 emissions have actually decreased due to conversion of coal-fired to natural gas fired power plants in part sparked by the shale boom

CO2 Emissions Decreasing Slide 9

We will always need fossil fuels Slide 10 Renewables consumption grows, but fossil fuels consumption is still largest player

PA Natural Gas Production Slide 11 PA is home to the #1 U.S. natural gas producer, entirely driven by the Marcellus/Utica Shale plays State College (PSU) is home to the producer that drilled the longest onshore lateral well in the world Large PSU PNGE Alumni Network are Oil & Gas CEOs/Executives Penn State is home to one of the founding father s of the Marcellus Terry Engelder

Some Key Takeaways Slide 12 If the US shale industry were a country, it would rank as the world s fifth largest hydrocarbon producer! We are not running out of oil and gas. We have ample supplies for generations. Hydrocarbons still supply 85% of the world s energy (Forbes 2015) Student demand strongly depends on oil as a commodity. Fossil fuel demand is increasing 3% per year worldwide. Student demand for employment is gaining strength and will continue to grow for years to come. You have a great opportunity to earn a job in the petroleum industry if you are good at what you do Join Penn State Petroleum & Natural Gas Engineering if you have an aptitude for the sciences, physics, and mathematics
