Also, see Span Chart on page 2 for size of your deck and quantities of XTENDEX material required. 1. Lay the 1st decking board onto a deck at the house or at the rim joist and mark locations for all concealed fasteners above the ledger or rim joist spaced maximum 16 o.c. all along the board s length. Drill dia. hole through the upper wall of decking board for the screw access Then pre-drill 7/64 dia. pilot holes through the bottom wall for all fasteners. Use #8-1 S/S deck screws to fasten the 1st board to a ledger or joist. Then use dia. plastic plugs to plug the holes through the upper wall. 2. Then place XTENDEX HOLD DOWN S acting also as spacers against the side of the 1st board at each deck support or joist spaced not more than 16 o.c. and screw them down with #6-1 S/S fasteners. Do not tighten the screws fully yet. Based on your deck configuration identify location of fixed (pinned) connection using information on pages 13 to 18 in this guide and pin 1st decking board as per instructions. 3. Place the 2nd board tightly in position under the hold down clips against 1st board, install hold down clips against the 2nd board as per instruction in paragraph above & then tighten the hold down clip screws between 1st and 2nd board snug. NOTE: PROVIDE DIAGONAL BRACING FOR PRESSURE TREATED DECK SUBSTRUCTURE ON THE UNDERSIDE OF JOISTS PT WOOD (2x8) DECK SUBSTRUCTURE NOTE: DO NOT OVER TORQUE SCREWS INTO HOLD DOWN S. 4. Continue in the same manner with hold-down clip fastening towards the other end pinning each individual board as described in section 2. Fasten the last board again as per recommendation for the 1st board above. 5. Do not trim the boards individually. Once all boards are laid on a deck, check the ambient temperature at that time and refer to the expansion and contraction chart on page 10 or 11& 12 for expansion and contraction gap requirements for G-Trim or between ends of multiple board decking configuration. Then trim all boards at the same time. G-TRIM EDGING DETAILS - for finishing the sides and ends of your XTENDEX 5/4 Decking. THERMAL EXPANSION CHART THERMAL EXPANSION AND CONTRACTION (CELSIUS) All wood plastic composites are subject to expansion and contraction caused by temperature change and moisture intake. Use of the following chart will help you to determine the gap or space required for the deck installation. Length of deck L is referred to as one continuous decking board. Where more than one board is used to cover the deck s length, allow for a gap equal to the sum of expansions of all individual boards. To control the direction of expansion and contraction fixed or pinned attachment of the deck board to the joist at specified location is required. For decks up to 20 feet long, decks can be built with one board length only. In this case the fixed connection will be done in the middle of the board to allow for expansion and contraction from the center towards the board ends in both directions. Coefficient of Thermal Expansion C = 0.0000463 (Inch/inch per degree Celsius) Examples: Ex. 1 Deck 16 in length Ex. 2 Deck 32 in Length. a) Full length deck board a) Two 16 boards used. b) Installed at 15 deg.
