Material and Qualification Procedures for Ships Approval of Fibre Reinforcements 1 Introduction 1.1 Application for approval 1.1.1 In order that consideration may be given to approval of fibre reinforcements, the local Surveyors are to submit a report to Materials and NDE Department, giving the information listed in Sections 2 and 3 together with the results of approval tests carried out under their survey, or alternatively by an independent test house. 1.1.2 The following Data Forms are to be used in the report: CMA/1R (Chopped strand mat reinforcements). GRA/1R (Fibre rovings). WRA/1R (Fibre woven rovings). CGR/2 (Composite fibre reinforcements). 1.2 Scope 1.2.1 All glass fibre chopped strand mats, fibre rovings and composite reinforcements employed in constructions moulded under LR survey are to be approved for this purpose prior to use. 1.2.2 In this context a `composite reinforcement' refers to those materials in which woven rovings, unidirectional rovings or crossplied unidirectional rovings are backed by a chopped strand mat, which may be attached to the roving reinforcement by adhesively bonding, needling or other means. 1.3 Validity of approval 1.3.1 Initial approval, where granted, will be for a period of five years. Thereafter, approval may be extended for successive periods of five years, following retesting and the re- submission of satisfactory property test data. 1.3.2 The approval will be limited to a nominated site of manufacture. Where the product is manufactured at other sites, these are to be approved separately. Page 3 of 17

Material and Qualification Procedures for Ships 1.4 Withdrawal of approval 1.4.1 Approval is given on the assumption that production material, when examined, will exhibit similar test results to those submitted, allowing for normal batch to batch variation. 1.4.2 Approval is contingent on the adherence to the stated specification. Approval will be withdrawn if: (a) (b) (c) (d) The properties of the material are found to deviate significantly from those on which the approval was originally granted. The material proves to be intractable in use. The quality control procedures are not adhered to consistently. The manufacturer makes changes to the formulation, product name or reference number without informing LR. 2 Information required for approval 2.1 General 2.1.1 Product literature. The manufacturer is to submit their current trade literature referring to the technical details of the product, together with two samples approximately 300 mm x 300 mm of each grade of material for which approval is sought. 2.1.2 Quality control. The manufacturer is to operate established quality control procedures capable of detecting any variations from the properties submitted for approval. A brief description of the quality control methods and frequency of testing is to be submitted. Part 3 of each of the Data Forms is provided for this purpose These should be signed by the Quality Manager of the site of manufacture. 2.1.3 Variants. Where approval of a range of closely related products is sought, the Surveyor is to consult Materials and NDE Department on testing requirements. In such cases it may not be required that laminates be made and tested from each of the products in the range. However, Part 1 of the relevant Data Form must be completed for each product, and samples of each material submitted. Page 4 of 17
