Introduction. CSR Gyprock and Fibre Cement (GFC) has developed a wide range of floor/ceiling and roof/ceiling systems to meet specific fire and acoustic requirements. The systems include ratings for sound transmission, sound impact and sound absorption, and for fire resistance up to. Generally, the fire resistance of floor and roof/ceiling systems is assessed from below, in accordance with the standard fire test of AS1530.4. This is the requirement of the BCA where lightweight construction is used for compartmentation and separation. Some elements such as fire-isolated passageways are required to have an when tested from outside. A number of ceiling systems are available that offer fire resistance from above to meet this requirement. CSR GFC ceiling systems use various fixing techniques for the attachment of linings. These include: a) Direct fixing to timber and steel joists or truss bottom chords. b) Screw fixing to steel furring channels that are attached to joists. c) Screw fixing to resilient or resiliently mounted furring channels. d) Screw fixing to suspended concealed metal grid. e) Lay-in panels in suspended exposed metal grid. Design Considerations. STRUCTURAL. All floor, roof and ceiling framing must be designed for the applied loads. Guidance for the selection of Rondo suspension and grid components is given in brochure GYP570 Gyprock Ceiling Systems Installation Guide. For other elements, refer to the appropriate design standards or handbooks, or contact the manufacturer for design information. CSR GFC recommends a minimum design pressure of 0.25kPa (downward) for the ceiling framing. Other wind pressures may be applicable; the designer should refer to AS/NZS1170. Wind loads on external ceilings can be similar to those on adjacent walls. Pressures can be positive or negative and the lining, grid and structure should be designed to resist the loads. Internal suspension components, even with down struts, may not be suitable. The maximum spacing of ceiling framing is 600mm. Closer spacing may be required for some lining materials or for design loads greater than 0.5kPa. CSR GFC Ceiling systems have been designed for timber or steel framing as noted in the system specification. Timber framing shall be solid timber or engineered floor joist such as LVL Glulam, plyweb joists, or trusses made from solid timber framing must be designed in accordance with AS1720.1. or AS1684 Steel framing for direct fixing of linings shall have base metal thickness (BMT) 0.5-1.6mm. Framing may be trusses, top hats, C sections, furring channels, or similar members. in all cases they should be designed in accordance with AS4600. For steel components in external environments, in heavy industrial areas or coastal areas, additional coatings may be required. Refer to AS/NZS2785 for guidance Direct-Fix Framing Systems. Ceiling linings may be fixed directly to primary timber or steel framing, or to secondary members such as furring channels and battens. Timber members to which plasterboard will be fixed must comply with AS1684 Residential Timber- Framed Construction, or be designed in accordance with AS1720.1 Timber Structures: Design Methods. Steel framing to which plasterboard will be fixed must comply with AS/NZS4600, Cold Formed Steel Structures. Suspended Ceiling Systems. Ceiling suspension systems must be designed to AS/NZS2785 Suspended Ceilings Design and Installation. Ceilings in this manual are not trafficable. Trafficable systems shall be designed in accordance with AS1657 Fixed Platforms, Walkways, Stairways and Ladders. Ceilings Rated from Above. Ceiling systems with plasterboard linings on top of joists are not trafficable or intended to be used for storage. The joists should be designed for all imposed loads including construction loads where fixing of sheets is required from above. Appropriate barriers and signage should be installed to prevent access. FIRE PERFORMANCE. Gyprock fire rated ceiling systems. have been designed with fire protection that protects the framing. E2. The Red Book

This means that no consideration of steel or timber framing design need be given for the fire rating. To protect structural beams that are entirely within the ceiling space, the structural adequacy component of the ceiling system must be at least equivalent to that required by the structural member. For example, a ceiling system with provides 90/-/- for a steel beam within the ceiling. Systems are available for beams that are not entirely enclosed. Framing and Lining. Plasterboard must be screw fixed only, adhesive is not permitted. Joints in the outer layer of all systems must be set with Gyprock paper tape. As a minimum, a single coat finish may be used. For general installation information refer to FIG. E3 to F9. Detailed fixing information is provided in brochures: Gyprock Ceiling Systems Installation Guide GYP570, CSR Gyprock Shaft Systems GYP546, CSR Fibre Cement Ceiling Systems FC129, CSR Fibre Cement ExpressWall Facade System FC126 and CSR Hebel SoundFloor Design Guide, HBL751-SFS. Ceiling systems are generally shown in a horizontal orientation. The system will not be reduced if ceilings are built on a rake. The support framing, including lateral bracing, must be designed considering the slope of the ceiling. Alternative support framing members may be used where timber joists are shown without reducing the system. These members include, but are not limited to, steel, composite steel/timber joists, laminated timber joists, and trussed or plywood web joists. System specifications for minimum cavity depths and floor surface finishes relate to acoustic performance only. Caulking. To attain the specified, all perimeter gaps and penetrations must be carefully and completely filled with appropriate caulking material. In fire rated systems, to attain the stated use CSR Gyprock Fire Mastic or other tested fire rated material of equivalent or better performance. Details for fire sealing of penetrations is given in Section Z. Vermiculite plaster is not to be used as a general purpose fire rated caulking. Its use is specified in some wall/ceiling junctions; refer to Gyprock Ceiling Systems Installation Guide GYP570. Vermiculite plaster has no capacity to accommodate building movement. PERFORMANCE. Sound Transmission. Sound flanking, the effectiveness of workmanship and caulking, the presence and treatment of penetrations, and the inclusion of structural elements and bridging items, may affect the acoustic performance of ceiling systems. Refer to Section A for detailed information. Alternative structural framing systems including steel, and composite steel/timber joists, laminated timber joists, and trussed or plywood web joists may be used without reducing the system rating. The stated or implied minimum cavity depth must also be maintained. For effective control of sound in the flanking path of a floor or roof space, acoustically rated walls should continue to the underside of the floor or roof above. Alternatively, select a detail from section Z equivalent to the required Rw or Rw + Ctr performance of the wall. In non-fire rated systems, to attain the stated sound transmission performance use CSR Gyprock Wet Area Acrylic Sealant, Gyprock Fire Mastic or other tested acoustic rated material of equivalent or better performance. Sound impact performance is stated as Ln,w + CI. Note that a lower value of Ln,w + CI has a higher impact performance. Floors finished with carpet and underlay achieve better impact performance than those with hard surfaces such as floorboards and tiles. If carpet is subsequently removed (from a system that uses it in its performance value), the floor may no longer meet the BCA impact requirements. Sound Absorption. Gyprock Perforated Plasterboard, Ecophon and Celotex ceiling products, have sound absorption qualities. These products may be used to influence the reverberation time of a room in order to improve the sound quality. Product performance is expressed as NRC in accordance with ASTM C423.This is calculated as the average of four frequencies in the range 250 2000Hz. Sound absorption values vary from 0 (total reflection) and 1.00 (total absorption) NRC values can be found in system CSR 890 E3. The Red Book

Installation For detailed information on junctions with walls, access hatches, light fixtures, control joints and penetrations, refer to Section Z of this manual. Plasterboard & Fibre Cement Fixing. Ceilings may be built to achieve a particular Level of Finish as defined in AS/NZS2589.1. The Level of Finish specified can have requirements for frame alignment, jointing and back blocking methods. Lining sheets must be installed with the long edge at right angles to the direction of the framing to which they are fixed. Refer to FIG. E3 to E9 for general fixing information using fastener and fastener/adhesive fixing methods. Detailed fixing information is provided in Gyprock Residential Installation Guide, GYP547, CSR Fibre Cement Ceiling Systems FC129 and Gyprock Ceiling Systems Installation Guide, GYP570. Components. LINING & FIXING MATERIALS Refer to Section A of this manual for detailed information on Gyprock plasterboard products, CSR Fibre Cement products, adhesive and fastener specifications. Control joints are used to reduce the possibility of cracks forming from structural movement, thermal and moisture movement and the like. Locations for joints should be chosen by the designer with regard to building shape, structural breaks, changes of substrate, and joint appearance. Ceiling systems with plasterboard linings must have control joints at 12m maximum spacing in both directions. Ceilings lined with CSR Fibre Cement Wallboard should have joints at 3.6m in most cases.
