Developing people should be at the core of every organisation, especially at times of change. Making time and space to invest in people is core to the success of every business, yet many organisations still struggle to put their people first. Developing your people through coaching and mentoring can be an incredibly rewarding process and should not simply be a nice to have element of your training plan. At CAKE we specialise in coaching, mentoring, learning and development solutions for you and your business. Encouraging businesses of all sizes and levels to empower their teams through coaching and mentoring. Working with you to develop and understand how to use coaching and mentoring as part of everyday working life, we can help you improve your organisation through your greatest asset - your people. Throughout my experience with Margaret and her team, I have found them to be professional and enthusiastic regarding coaching. Their administration is great and the trainers engage immediately with our people and our culture. Coaching and Mentoring The power of coaching and mentoring as a learning and development tool has been increasingly recognised in the workplace. Managers are frequently asked to provide a coaching leadership style or to act as mentors, but often lack the specific knowledge and skills required. It is increasingly apparent that HR and L&D professionals need this credible skillset to support the needs of the people in their organisations. A people-centred approach Coaching is effectively a conversation between two people and is focused on unlocking a person s potential to maximise their own performance. Using effective listening and questioning skills, a coach helps explore options to enhance performance of the coachee and to find their own solutions to issues they may be experiencing in professional life. As well as enhancing an individual s potential, it accelerates progress by providing greater focus and awareness of choice. At CAKE we provide bespoke coaching programmes tailored to your organisation, enabling you to empower your teams and guide them. Our expert coaches work with individuals at all stages of their career and are specialists in executive coaching to help business leaders succeed. Open programmes are available for anyone who wishes to join and benefit through group learning and our CMI accredited courses cover a range of people development practices. We also host events to promote best practice and the benefits of coaching including The Coaching Conversation, the annual East of England Coaching and Mentoring Conference. 4 5
CAKE prides itself on the professionalism and integrity of its coaches and facilitators who are all highly experienced, qualified practitioners. So what is coaching? Coaching starts by concentrating on where you are now and what you are willing to do to get where you want to be in the future. Coaching can help your business in a number of ways: Supporting changes in attitudes and behaviour that can translate into more effective job performance. Helping to identify barriers that may be preventing people being more effective in their roles. Promoting individual responsibility for performance and development. Helping to raise self-awareness and self-management. Supporting staff in dealing with a climate of rapid or continual change. Identifying what motivates individual team members and creating a more motivational climate. Using self awareness to create zones of influence beyond your own team or department. Changing role from operational focus to a more strategic focus. Identifying career development preference. Improving decision making, particularly in involving others and communicating outcomes. Providing individuals with feedback on strengths and areas for development which is supported by 360 feedback. How does it work? Selecting a coach Following a detailed conversation to understand your requirements, we will put forward three best fit coach profiles so you can choose the coach you want to work with. Working with your CAKE coach will give you the confidence to share your needs and help you gain the confidence that you are working with an empathetic professional whose aim is to see you progress. The Coaching Sessions Prior to the first session, your coach will call you in order to build rapport and agree the details of the first session. Typically there will be five sessions and a mixture of face to face and telephone or Skype conversations. Coaching sessions will take place at a venue and within a timescale to suit you and are usually completed within six months. Support Coaching We recommend that you complete our 360 feedback process before starting coaching and once again at the end. This provides powerful feedback and information for you to help demonstrate progress made on your goals and objectives. It can also provide an effective measure of ROI. Coaching to suit your business. CAKE creates tailored coaching programmes designed to fit your business perfectly. Many off the shelf programmes can provide a few useful generic tips to improve the skills of the members of your team, but the CAKE approach delves deeper - looking into your specific needs. We get to know your business so we can help you bring out the best in everyone. CAKE has many years of experience in going into organisations and quickly grasping how things work. Our passion is devising a programme to nurture the development of your talented team. 6 7
What will I learn? By the end of our programme you will be able to: Understand the difference between coaching and mentoring and how to use each effectively. Have the ability to identify the tools and techniques required to support coaching and mentoring interventions appropriate to your organisation. Be capable of preparing an effective coaching and mentoring strategy for your organisation. Grow in confidence as a professional coach or mentor. CMI Level 5 Certificate and Diploma in Management Coaching and Mentoring At CAKE we have created a coaching and mentoring programme to develop skills and demonstrate credibility. Our CMI Level 5 Certificate and Diploma in Management Coaching and Mentoring has been designed to support managers with the development of management coaching and mentoring skills, identifying the links between coaching, mentoring and the achievement of business goals. The programme is aimed squarely at the in-house coach and mentor, and covers a wide variety of topics ranging from understanding organisational culture and mentoring for teams and individuals through to performance management and the strategic development of staff. Demonstrate coaching and mentoring competence. We have worked with Margaret and her team on a number of people development projects. I am always impressed by the way in which they deliver, facilitating programmes whereby the group find their own solutions to problems. Margaret has a wonderfully positive demeanour and her enthusiasm and passion for development of people is infectious. 8 Jo Mapston, Head of Human Resources, Treatt PLC 9
Leadership and Management CAKE recognises that the development of leaders and managers is key to the success of your organisation. As more and more organisations are measuring the engagement of their people, the more they recognise the need for great leadership. CAKE works with many different organisations to tailor development interventions that really make the difference. We can offer a wide range of topics in a modular format to help you build a programme that fully meets the needs of your business or organisation. Our consultants are skilled and experienced in designing and delivering bespoke in-house tailored programmes, across a variety of industry sectors and organisations, helping businesses like yours to achieve a strong leadership culture. Programmes designed by CAKE combine facilitated group learning, one-to-one coaching, mentoring, project work, action learning and self-directed study encouraging individuals to take responsibility for their own learning and development. Psychometrics CAKE usually encourages a diagnostic phase using Personality Profiling, Culture and Engagement surveys and threesixty assessment. We use a wide range of psychometric products to help with development planning and identification of how best to utilise the learning resources available. Our preference is to work in partnership with your organisation - identifying and possibly developing in-house resources where possible. Leadership and Management Programmes CAKE offers practical, business-focused management qualifications for your executives, managers, supervisors or team leaders. We provide open programmes leading to awards, certificates and diplomas to Level 7, accredited by the two best known membership and accreditation bodies in the increasingly professionalised roles of management and leadership. The Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) and Chartered Management Institute (CMI) programmes combine the rigour of assessment with a practical learning experience. While both organisations set their own standards for qualification, there is still plenty of scope for CAKE to construct a programme to meet the specific needs of your business. The additional benefit of an open programme is that members of your team not only learn from the expertise of one of our consultants, but also from meeting individuals from other organisations to gain a variety of different perspectives. CAKE provides a wide range of programmes at different levels, so talk to us about how we can identify the right mix of ingredients for you or members of your team. 10 11
How does employee engagement benefit my business? Feeling Valued By asking employees for their input on a survey, they will feel their views and ideas are being valued. This may also boost employee morale because it lets employees know that they matter to the company. Improving Internal Communication Surveying employees is a form of communication between employees and managers, so the surveying process can strengthen employee and managerial relations. Improving Morale Developing an employee satisfaction survey is a useful way to identify potential morale concerns. It can also highlight ways to improve conditions for employees before they have a negative impact on the organisation. Culture and Engagement Employee engagement in the development of your business can be extremely valuable. It is widely recognised that employee engagement has a positive impact on key organisational outcomes, such as profit, turnover, productivity and innovation, as well as improving customer wellbeing, health and safety, and reducing absenteeism. We host a number of Culture & Engagement workshops, roundtable discussion groups and breakfast seminars, to share best practice in employee engagement and to support businesses within the group in developing employee engagement strategies and plans. We help organisations understand more about their organisation s culture. We will identify any potential development opportunities for creating a workplace which is attractive to both current employees and up-and-coming talent. Why develop your team? The development of teams within your organisation can have a dramatic effect on your workplace environment, productivity and profitability. Our innovative programmes help to resolve conflicts and create more harmony within the team. We promote interaction, motivate individual team members and help more people work together. By defining specific roles within the team and by streamlining decision making processes, we create a culture for team effectiveness. Developing Effective Teams CAKE offers opportunities for team members to improve their collective skills as a group. Whether they need to develop better practices, or identify and resolve communication and process issues, there is always room for improvement. Teams that work together often get bogged down in doing the day job and don t have the time, opportunity or skills to review their working practices. Our team development programmes are ideal for improving working relations and providing the opportunity for members to get to know each other better. My relationship with Margaret spans many years and her team have consistently exceeded our expectations. They have the ability to understand our business drivers and our culture and then identify the resources that will help us reach our goals. The icing on the cake for us has to be their help in enabling us to better understand how our employees feel about our culture. CAKE examines closely how they already work as a team and identifies barriers to their collaboration. Once these are highlighted, the team mutually undertakes to either reduce or eliminate the barriers, leading to better performance. 12 Sadie Lofthouse, Head of Human Resources, Adnams PLC 13
