BIOTECTOR TOC Analysers Reliable and accurate measurement of Total Organic Carbon in potable and waste water streams Adrian Hughes Process Sales Consultant
What is TOC The TOC test measures the amount of organic carbon present in a water sample. Inorganic carbon (carbonates) removed first by acidification. Total Organic Carbon (TOC) Total Carbon (TC) Total Inorganic Carbon (TIC)
Why is TOC Important? The significance of TOC is growing, in some European countries TOC has already replaced COD as a monitoring parameter TOC can be monitored in wastewater to control industrial pollution and optimise treatment processes Measuring TOC allows WwTP to monitor the organic content of their effluent and discharge source to ensure favorable conditions for aquatic life and drinking water sources
How is TOC Measured? The TOC test uses heat, ultraviolet light, or a strong chemical oxidant (or a combination of the three) to oxidise organic compounds to CO 2 and H 2 O CO 2 generated is measured to give TOC Current Hach Lange TOC Methods Continuous Measurement (UVAS) Online Instruments (Biotector) Colorimetric Method Laboratory Instruments

SAMPLING: A representative unfiltered sample from the stream to be measured is pumped into the analyzer. The sample injection valve automatically selects the appropriate sample volume for the optimum measuring range. TIC DETECTION: Acid is added to lower the ph so that inorganic carbon is sparged off as CO2. This is measured to ensure TIC is not carried over into the TOC. OXIDATION: The BioTector s patented oxidation method (TSAO) is used to achieve total and complete oxidation of sample, including organic carbon to CO2. TSAO utilizes hydroxyl radicals generated within the analyzer by combining oxygen, which passes through the ozone generator, with sodium hydroxide. TOC MEASUREMENT: To remove the CO2 from the oxidized sample, the ph of the sample is lowered again. The CO2 is sparged and measured by the specially developed NDIR-detector. The result is displayed as Total Organic Carbon (TOC). CLEANING: The entire system is automatically self-cleaned by the reaction process during every cycle. No additional cleaning solution is required.
Worry Free TOC Breakthrough TOC Technology: Two Stage, Advanced Oxidation (TSAO) Accurate and reliable results with 99.8% uptime Benefits of TSAO 1. Organics in sample completely oxidised to CO 2 2. The CO 2 is measured by the specially developed NDIR CO 2 analyser and the TOC result is displayed 3. Minimal reagent usage 4. Self cleaning process prevents build up in the reactor 25.09.2014 Hach Lange
SELF CLEANING TECHNOLOGY The outside surface of the sample tubing is covered with fatty material in a dairy plant. The internal surface of the tubing is kept clean with the self cleaning technology. 25.09.2014 Hach Lange

Real-time TOC Tightens Effluent Control at Greencore A food manufacturing facility in Selby, UK, has installed a continuous TOC (Total Organic Carbon) Biotector B7000 monitor which has dramatically improved the site s capability to refine and improve the plant s wastewater treatment process. As a result the plant is better able to quickly respond to changes in the influent. The signals from the Biotector have been integrated in to the effluent plant control system. Any loads that exceed a predetermined level are diverted to the site calamity tank. 25.09.2014 Hach Lange 11

BioTector B3500c TOC Analyzer Applications The B3500c delivers 99.8% uptime with the lowest operating cost in clean water applications: Condensate Return Cooling water Potable water Demineralised water Waste water from RO Clean Carbon Bed Absorber water 25.09.2014 Hach Lange
Organic carbon- the role in drinking water control at Tullich WTW Evaluation of TOC from raw and treated streams allows the establishment of ozone treatment efficiency, in real-time. With assessment of DOC in advance of chlorination, prediction of the potential for Trihalomethanes forming is achieved. Long term strategy is to build a profile of ozone vs colour vs TOC/DOC cross-correlation, to provide an accurate dosing table for operations. 25.09.2014 Hach Lange 14
