The development of bonded windows doesn t just meet this wish but offers some other, quite fascinating options. Apart from the significant improvement of the thermal and noise insulation, the bonding allows attractive large area windows or slimmer frames, as required by current architectural trends. The fact that bonded windows show clear advantages in reducing break-ins in comparison to conventional manufacturing is another important plus point for the new technology.
4 Bonded window systems Direct glazing, the bonding of the insulating glass unit in a window sash made of wood, PVC or aluminium has become the state of the art. The additional strength resulting from the bonding offers many advantages: Attractive design options: Large area windows due to the use of more narrow frames The use of large glass areas Attractive manufacturing: Due to the bonding, less steel can be used in the frame Lower manufacturing costs Maintenance-free Attractive sales arguments: Improvement of the thermal and noise insulation Improved security from break-ins As far as adhesion to glass is concerned, silicone is unbeatable, as has been shown in the past when it has been used to construct glass façades for buildings. Its resistance to ageing and to moisture, in other words the function of the bond, has been documented for decades.
System requirements 5 Compatibility The bonding of glass panes is a manufacturing process where different materials are joined together. If you simply consider the variety of (painted) woods, plastics, metals and coatings used to make windows, including the glass and seals (i.e. the composite seals around the insulating glass units) and not least the sealing and bonding materials, then there can be no doubt that the compatibility of the individual components as well as any necessary use of a primer are decisive for manufacturing. Only systems which have been tested for adhesion and compatibility, where every single component has been clearly defined, can guarantee a flawless design. To guarantee quality, OTTO works together with several sectors; with the makers of window profiles and insulating glass units to test material compatibility, so as to prevent damaging interactions. The Rosenheim institute for window technology (ift) offers the VE 08/3 guidelines for bonded windows (a basis for the evaluation of bonded glazing systems). In addition to that, the German RAL quality institute offers the RAL GZ 716/1 guidelines. Both sets of guidelines are based on the European standards DIN EN 14351 1 and DIN EN 12608. System requirements: The decisive factor for a window to be flawless in the long term is the compatibility of all relevant materials. We thus recommend that all materials adjacent to the windows be checked for compatibility. To ensure that you have the latest information, please see the compatibility lists for composite edging materials on our website. There you will also find test certificates, practical information about using two-component materials as well as the varying options for the bonding positions. Please also note the recommendation on the use of primers in our technical data sheet.
6OTTOCOLL S 81 With OTTOCOLL S 81, OTTO offers a special, two component silicone for direct glazing both in drums or hobbocks for industrial manufacturing as well as in side by side cartridges for small series or single parts. The practical OTTOCOLL S 81 coaxial cartridge is OTTO s simple solution for on site work. Optimisation in series production In series production, bonding glass with OTTOCOLL S 81 enables significant room for optimisation. The economic benefits in series production come from the savings of time and material and the lower process costs which come from reducing the steel reinforcement: for plastic profiles with an installation depth of 80 mm, sash heights of 1.40 m are possible without steel reinforcement, as the bonding strengthens the sash. There is also a reduction in the risk of the glass breaking owing to the elastic properties of the silicone, which are always of benefit where stresses can arise. This helps first of all in the manufacturing process as the stress peaks provoked by classical glazing blocks no longer occur, but also during the subsequent use. The elastic adhesive reliably compensates for the differing thermal expansion/contraction of the parts due to the temperature difference between the inside and outside. Owing to the quick hardening of OTTOCOLL S 81 work on bonded parts can quickly proceed, while at the same time ensuring strong adhesion right from the start.
Ideal for industry and trade 7 Bonding when making single items & bonding on site Direct glazing, in other words bonding an insulating glass unit in a window sash made of wood, PVC or aluminium is not just the state of the art for series production, but it is also becoming ever more important for small series, when making single items or when renovating parts of windows on site. The benefits here are not so much the cost advantages as for series production, but above all the advantages for the end customer: Improved appearance due to the use of more narrow frames The option of using larger glass units Improved U values for the glazing unit Improved security from break-ins For small series or to make single units, OTTO offers OTTOCOLL S 81 in side by side cartridges. OTTOCOLL S 81 is also available in practical coaxial cartridges. The perfect solution for working on site. Coaxial cartridges have 2 chambers for the two material components but can still be used with standard guns for single component cartridges. 490 ml side-by-side cartridge With the 280 ml coaxial cartridge, two-component materials can be dispensed with standard guns for single component cartridges. For ease of use, we recommend the H 245 OTTO Hand operated Gun with its higher press force. 280 ml coaxial cartridge
8 Technical specifications Bonding positions The sealing and bonding materials for windows must have very particular properties while at the same time permitting fast production. For all types and positions of the various window designs, OTTO offers offers a highly specialised product with OTTOCOLL S 81. OTTOCOLL S 81 doesn t just impress with its excellent adhesion to wood, plastic, metal and glass, but is also offers properties which are ideally suited for production. For example, long skin forming time to fill cavities, rapid curing for short cycle times even with thick layers, extremely high tensile strength. The quality of a bond is not just determined by compatibility but also the by quality of the surfaces to be joined, i.e. their roughness, cleaning, preparation, coating, and by the joining process itself, i.e. positioning, pressing, pressing on just once etc. OTTO provides you with the option of consulting the details of your design with their application experts.
