Introduction To Aspec Engineering ASPEC Engineering Pty Ltd (ASPEC) is a multi-disciplinary engineering firm that provides services to mining companies, ports, and heavy industries throughout Australia. ASPEC has developed close ties with clients, and is able to provide a complete and comprehensive service in core business areas of engineering projects, materials handling machines, and structural integrity. ASPEC was established in 2003 by Richard Morgan and Frank Gatto who had a long history with the BHP Group (now BHP Billiton). ASPEC is now an industry leader for material handling machines for Australian bulk export ports. In its 10 years of operation the company has been involved with over 80 materials handling machines. Engineering Projects ASPEC has completed detailed engineering design for materials handling systems and retrofit works for mining companies, heavy industries, and ports. ASPEC undertakes the majority of design in-house and coordinates input from specialist subconsultants as required for a complete multi-disciplinary service. Materials Handling Machines ASPEC has worked extensively on materials handling machinery and infrastructure such as: Stackers Reclaimers Shiploaders Car Dumpers/Car Positioners Stockyards Jetties and Wharfs Mobile Crushing/Conveying Systems Conveyors, Surge Bins and Transfers ASPEC has undertaken the following roles: Review of stockyard, wharf and shiploader configurations Machine Selection type configuration Wharf design type of shiploader impacts wharf design Stockyard layout e.g. pile geometry and boom length affect capacity, rail centres influence stability and wheel loadings Machine performance digging simulations, power and throughput calculations Independent auditor for structural/mechanical design compliance to AS4324.1 and owners specifications Writing specification and tender documentation for upgrade or replacement of machines Studies on existing machines remaining life, overload protections systems, machine books, maintenance costs, risk review Failure investigations failures of elevated structures, machine failures, shaft failures Design of upgrades for existing machines compliance with AS4324.1, major maintenance tasks e.g. procedures and jacking systems for slew bearing change outs Figure 2. Structural Integrity ASPEC specialises in structural integrity of ports and mining facilities. ASPEC conducts ongoing structural audits for a number of major corporations. In additions, ASPEC undertakes specialist investigation for life extension of structures and mechanical components involving finite element analysis, strain gauging, fracture mechanics, and engineering design. ASPEC uses a risk-based methodology following Australian and International Standards. ASPEC s primary expertise is in Structural and Mechanical engineering. We routinely engage sub-consultants to supplement our resources and expertise while ASPEC performs the engineering management role. Richard Morgan (Director) Richard Morgan BE MengSc, CPEng, FIEStructE, FIEAust, is a Registered Professional Engineer with over 35 years experience predominately associated with ports, marine terminals, and mining industrial facilities. Prior to joining ASPEC in 2003, Richard held senior positions with a number of engineering companies including over 10 years as Principal Structural Consultant for BHP Engineering. He was formerly the President of the Queensland Division of Engineers Australia, as well as the Chair of its Structural College. Richard holds Memberships to the Risk Engineering Society, PIANC, the Australian Steel Institute, and the Concrete Institute and is chairman of the Standards Australia Committee ME43 for Materials Handling Machines. He is the author and co-author of 18 technical papers, many of which have been presented at international conferences. Frank Gatto (Director) Frank Gatto BE(Civil), MEngSc, PhDEng, MIE Aust, CPEng, RPEQ, has over 30 years experience in civil and structural engineering. His specialty extends to the assessment of structural integrity, asset management, and the analysis and design of industrial plants, mines, port facilities, and shiploaders. He is also an expert in ergonomics, structural dynamics, metal fatigue, risk studies, site audits, and life extension planning. Frank is committed to promoting safety and quality. His work with the company resulted in the Australian Bulk Handling Awards for Occupational Health and Safety in 2006; and for Materials Handling Optimisation in Transport and Conveying Technology in 2007. He has authored and co-authored 15 technical papers. He currently sits on the editorial board of the Australian Journal of Structural Engineering. Mark Biggs (Perth Office Manager, Senior Mechanical Engineer) Mark BE (Mech), CPEng, MIEAust, RPEQ, has been with ASPEC since 2004. He has relocated to Western Australia to manage the Perth office. Mark has extensive experience in structural and mechanical engineering design and review of materials handling systems, materials handling machines and heavy industrial equipment. Mark s portfolio of experience includes numerous handling and heavy industrial engineering projects across Australia, and overseas in Canada, Chile and Chine. His forte is in structural and mechanical engineering design, Third party design auditing, risk assessment and life expansion studies. He has a comprehensive understanding of current Australian Standards and their application to mechanical design Joanna Ao (Senior Structural Engineer) Joanna Ao BE, BComm, CPEng, MIE Aust, is a Senior Structural Engineer with over 10 years of technical and management experience. Joanna has gained exposure in both Greenfield and Brownfield projects where she was involved in various materials handling machine audits, mine upgrades, new mine developments, new offshore facility development and other heavy industrial facilities projects. Based in the Perth Office Joanna joined ASPEC Engineering in 2011 following a successful career with large engineering firms in Western Australia. Jeff Brook BE, CPENG, MIEAust, RPEQ, is a structural engineer with over 13 years of experience in heavy civil and structural engineering projects. He is a Chartered Professional Engineer, and holds memberships to Engineers Australia, the Structural College and the Civil College. As the Team Leader of ASPEC s Engineering Project Group in Brisbane, Jeff extends his strong technical expertise to project management and the coordination of multidisciplinary teams of structural and mechanical engineers, CAD drafters and designers, and a range of external sub-consultants. Jeff s diverse expertise encompasses the design of port and mine infrastructure, the design of bulk materials handling machines, structural investigations and audits. He has a proven track record in delivering exceptional designs and structural solutions tailored to the needs of his clients. Craig Meng (Mackay Office Manager, Senior Structural Engineer) Craig Meng BE (Civil), CPEng, MIEAust, RPEQ, is a structural engineer with over 10 years of technical and management experience. He is the leader of ASPEC Engineering s Asset Integrity and Operational Support group at Mackay, and is a specialist in structural integrity, particularly materials handling structures in heavy industrial facilities. Over the years, Craig has gained a broad cross-section of experience in designing and upgrading materials handling structures and machines, and conducting structural integrity investigations and rehabilitation. He is committed to helping achieving a balance between production and safety. Robert Gibson (Newcastle Office Manager, Senior Mechanical Engineer) Robert Gibson BE (Mech) has over 28 years of technical and management experience in the steel and aluminium industry, and is a valued leader of the Cranes and Machines discipline in ASPEC. He has broad mechanical engineering experience in many facets of heavy industrial facilities, ranging from concept design, through to manufacturing and commissioning of projects. With his design expertise, combined with years of hands-on fieldwork experience and a comprehensive understanding of practical and technical complexities, Robert brings a holistic and integrated approach to engineering solutions. He specialist in heavy industrial mechanical design, in particular, the design of materials handling machines. He is extensively experienced in hydraulic and pneumatic system application, lubrication application, materials selection and wear reduction for stackers, reclaimers, shiploaders and other mobile mining equipment. Chris Handenham (Wollongong Office Manager, Principal Structural Engineer) Chris Handenham BE (Civil), MIEAust, CPEng, NPER is a principal structural engineer with more than 35 years experience in structural engineering design. Chris is the dedicated office manager of the ASPEC Wollongong office. Chris works closely with his team to develop client relationships and his experience in the industry ensures he achieves excellent project outcomes. He has a broad knowledge in construction, contract documentation and specification of heavy industrial structures in mining, steelmaking, aluminium smelting and petrochemical installations, rail and road infrastructures, airport and port infrastructure and commercial and residential developments.
