Conformity Assessment Dan Cheetham Welding and NDE 4/12/16
Welding & NDE requirements Welding What is required for compliance with AMSE Code? -Welding Procedures and welder/welding operators qualified in accordance with Section IX. -Documented evidence of welder continuity (welding in the process at least every 6 months)
Welding & NDE requirements NDE -What documents are required? -Review of procedures and Written Practice. -Common problems found
WPS- -What must be addressed on a WPS? -Must include all required essential, supplementary essential (when required), and non-essential variables. (QW-200.1(b)) -The WPS may include additional requirements as determined by the manufacturer. Welder must weld within the variables established on the WPS.
-What if they cannot weld within the ranges established? -What if they do not weld within the ranges established?
PQR- -PQR is the record of variables recorded during he welding of the test coupon and the test results. (QW-200.2(a)) -The PQR is certified accurate by the manufacturer. It is intended to be the organization s verification that the information is true record of the variables used during the welding of the test coupon.
-What must be addressed on a PQR? (QW-200.2(b)) -What must be done if it is found to lack required variables? QW-200.2(c) says that changes to a PQR is not permitted except As permitted in QW-200.2(c)
WPQ/WOPQ- -The WPQ/WOPQ (WPQ) is a record of variables used in the performance qualification of a welder. -The WPQ shall include the essential variables used, the ranges qualified, the type of test and test results. (QW-301.4)
-The WPQ is certified accurate by the manufacturer. It is intended to be the organization s verification that the information is true record of the variables used during the welding of the test coupon.
Welder continuity- -Objective evidence of welding. Must indicate the welder welded at least every six months in each process. (QW-322.1) -What if there is a gap of more than 6 months (QW-322.2)
Examination of welds- -Tack weld examination. What is required? If a tack weld is to be included in the final weld, it must be examined for defects and found defective, must be removed. The examination must be after the tack weld is properly prepared by grinding or other suitable means. This is a Code required examination, so there must be objective evidence the exam was completed and found satisfactory. (PW-31.1, UW-31(c))
-Examination of all parts prior to joining to make certain they have been properly fitted for welding and the surfaces to be joined have been cleaned and the alignment tolerances are maintained. Commonly known as a fit-up examination. Requires objective evidence the exam was completed and found satisfactory. (UG-90(b)(12))
-Final examination of welds is required to determine weld sizes are as prescribed by the Code or the drawing. Requires objective evidence the exam was completed and found satisfactory. Must determine that all welds have been identified by the welder or that a record was kept to determine who welded each joint (as allowed by the Code Section and the Quality Control System).
What is expected to occur during a Joint Review (JR) -The Team will review welding documents (WPS, PQR, WPQ and continuity). -Section IX will be used as the basis to determine compliance. -A welding demonstration is required. Including fit-up examination, verification that the proper WPS is being used by the welder, acceptance of completed weld by QC.
-Common deficiencies identified at a JR. -Tack welds not being properly examined or documented. -Fit-up examination not being documented. -PQR not addressing all required essential variables. -WPS not addressing all required variables. -WPQ not addressing all required variables or the proper ranges. -Continuity records lacking objective evidence.
Questions about welding?
NDE requirements NDE -What documents are required to be available for review at the JR? -Written Practice, either the manufacturer s or subcontractor s. Sometimes both are required. -Written procedures -Personnel qualification and examination records, including current eye exams.
NDE requirements -The JR Team will review the: -Written Practice will be based on SNT-TC-1A or CP-189 as appropriate. (PW-50.1, UW-54(a)) -Review of the procedures will be based on Section V. -Review of personnel qualification and examination records will be based on the employer s Written Practice or for PT & MT for Section I and Section VIII Div. 1, the appropriate appendix.
NDE requirements -Common deficiencies identified at a Joint Review. -WP does not specify the Certifying Authority, does not require maintenance of all required records, does not specify timeframe for Technical Performance Evaluation. (SNT-TC-1A) -Written procedures do not include all elements required by Section V. -NDE reports do not include all information required Section V.
