Compost and digestate: sustainability, benefits, impacts for the environment and for plant production International congress in Solothurn, Switzerland 27 th 29 th February, 2008

Welcome to CODIS 2008 Composting and digestion of biogenic waste materials and subsequent application of compost and digestate to the soil contribute to the recycling of nutrients and to the production of renewable energy. Moreover, compost and digestate can improve soil fertility and suppress plant diseases. On the other hand, compost and digestate may also contain a variety of pollutants such as heavy metals and organic contaminants, which are hazardous for the soil. Compost and digestate have been thoroughly investigated within two associated projects entitled Organic Pollutants in Compost and Digestate in Switzerland and Effects of Composts and Digestate on the Environment, Soil Fertility and Plant Health. These projects yielded new insights into the properties of compost and digestate, mainly with regard to biological parameters and the occurrence of both classic and emerging organic pollutants. The CODIS 2008 congress is the final event of these two projects. CODIS 2008 is a platform where scientists, practitioners and authorities meet to discuss current issues and future trends. Concept of CODIS 2008 The main focus of CODIS 2008 will be on the quality of compost and digestate derived from source separated biogenic waste and animal manure. Beneficial and adverse impacts on the environment and plant production due to the application of compost and digestate and the production of renewable energy will be considered. CODIS 2008 is organized in two parts: In the first two days, the scientific community will have the opportunity to present and discuss their results. These two days comprise plenary sessions, parallel sessions and poster sessions. These two days will be held in English. The third day is devoted to an encounter between the scientific community, practitioners and representatives of public authorities. It is possible for these people to participate only in the third day, during which presentations will be translated simultaneously into German. Tentative program Day 1: Session 1: Session 2.1: Session 2.2: Day 2: Session 3.1: Session 3.2: Session 4.1: Session 4.2: Session 5: Day 3: Session P1: Composts and digestates quality The state of biogenic waste treatment in Switzerland and Europe Aspects of compost quality Organic pollutants and heavy metals in organic waste products and feedstock materials / Trends and legislation Impacts of composts and digestates Influence of composts and digestates on soil properties Chemical analysis and sampling Influence of composts and digestates on plant growth and health Input of pollutants to soil due to application of organic waste products / Implications for soil organisms and the food chain Comprehensive significance of composts and digestates Science meets practice Needs and wishes of practitioners and authorities Session P2a: Process management and product quality Session P2b: Practical options to limit pollutants in the composts and digestates produced Session P3: Use of composts and digestates: Choice of product depending on utilization strategy and goal
